  • Hmmm, what exactly do you like to play, anyway?  A melee?  Melee with some spells?  Give us an idea ... else everyone'll just vote according to their preference, and you'll just end up playing what everyone else plays (and may even end up hating the decision).

Disregard all the above though, if that's your intention.

hmm..   I'm just concerned about selecting the most effective job, I like playing a melee with good skills to work with. . Im scared i'll choose a job then regret it because theres a better job i could of chosen :P

    Thanks, Slik

There is no better jobs than others. The best job is the job that suits you the best.

Well, by better than others I mean for example....

A DarkKnight does heavy damage but has bad defense, On the other hand Paladin Dosent do as good of damage but has a better defense..

So i'm just trying to not pick something that won't satisfy me, which is where im stuck O.O

Theres a huge variety of jobs which makes it all the more difficult :P

    Thanks, Slik

  • This kinda goes back to what I was saying.

You have to define what you like.  Just saying that you like melee jobs could mean paladin/dark knight/warrior/thief/ranger/samurai/ninja ... or you can melee as a white mage, too.  I guess what I'm saying is, what type of melee characters do you like to play?  Defensive?  Offensive?  Hybrid?

I think the general consensus is probably there is no single class that'll dominate everything else; player talent goes a long way to making an effective force to be reckoned with.  In the end, it comes down to what you like to play; playing the job that everyone else, but maybe not you, prefers isn't the solution.  In FFXI you can change jobs at your leisure, so I would suggest to just play, experiment and find out what works best for you.  Servers are different, people's opinion can vary - your playing experience is yours alone - make it happen for yourself.

But if you must have an opinion, start out with a warrior and then sub it for samurai if you want damage out the wazoo.   I've even heard of people saying making monk/samurai for the most damage ... I'm not sure if that's true or not, but maybe you can do some research and find out.  Or, like I said, just play and find out. :)

Well then i'd say I like playing Offensive characters, and im looking for a good damage combo :P

If I cant decide by the time I start playing i'll just go for warrior , then sub samurai and experiment a bit...

Monk/Samurai sounds different, i'll look into it :D

    Thanks, Slik

    Dark Knight/Warrior=great dmg

thats what I would pick, but i decided to go caster since I couldnt bare being a warrior for 30 levels

  • SlikSlik Member Posts: 26

Yeah, thats another possible combo.. hmm

Friend lent me his FFXI Book so I could pick my job combo ;p

*It says, As Samurai as your main, your best sub would be Warrior, And The Three best support jobs a samurai would be good for are 1.Dragoon/Samurai, 2.Warrior/Samurai, 3. Ranger/Samurai

"Samurai/Warrior The vast majority of Samurai characters level as Warriors ahead of time and use that as a support job when the opportunity arises. This pairing is nearly perfect because of its abilityto mix offense and defense during normal situations and to bury itself in total rage when monsters are looking the wrong way."

"Dragoon/Samurai This option is wicked, although it takes lots of time to level a warrior and train both of these extra jobs. At least you will have a spear / polearm mastered the entire way. Beyond that, the solid strength, hit points, and damage of this combo bring it to one of the highest levels in the game."

"Warrior/Samurai This combination is superb as well. All of the flexibility of a warrior added to extra TP and abilities. A Samurai is one othe best support jobs for a warrior."

"Ranger/Samurai Rangers already lay waste to anything on a field and the added use of weapon skills outweighs many of the offerings that other support jobs offer. The only downside of this deadly character is a somwhat lower agility."

    *As a Darkknight as your main, 1. Darkknight/Warrior 2. Darkknight/Samurai
It dosent list any support jobs for Darkknight since they say its not worth it.

"Darkknight/Warrior very few combinations hit as hard in melee at this one. Rangers will outperform Darkknights here, but they must use expensive missile weapons and ammunition. Darkknights are lower in maintenance, and it's enjoyable to play as one. With Warrior subed, berserk is used to boost damage while Paladins and full Warriors grab aggro."

"Darkknight/Samurai do not have as much room for error compared to a Darkknight/warrior. Instead of causing heavier melee damage during normal attacks this duo piles the damage into larger waves. By using more special attacks, this Darkknight can inflict stunning amounts of damage over a short period. Without a warrior's defense backround, this Darknight is even less capable of surviving aggro, but it's acceptable if you want a higher offense."

    Sooo many choices image

    Thanks, Slik

at first i wanted to go dark knight/warrior, but then i thought that i couldnt stand swinging a sword and using provoke for 30 levels, so i decided to go redmage...and something else (not sure yet) because redmage has so much versatility and sounds like a lot of fun.

  • Dragoon/samurai sounds way cool, in my opinion!

  • SlikSlik Member Posts: 26

Yeah it does, but .. so many choices haha image

    Thanks, Slik

Ok, here is my problem. I will be buying this game within the next few weeks, and I'm not sure what job i want, but it sounds to me like a Ninja would be cool. Could anyone post some items that a ninja/warrior specific guy would need/like?

Whats the deal with dragoons? They get a kick, good looking armor, and a pet. Whats so good about them? does their spear do mega dmg? does their wyvern do mega dmg? I dont know why people are picking them, why are they good?

  • SlikSlik Member Posts: 26

Go for weapons that raise your character's ability to inflict damage, and look for weapons with elemental properties to take advantage of a ninja's ninjutsu abilities.
Look for armor that raises dexterity and Agility; both of these are very important. This one is one of the rare jobs that relies far more on evasion than having Hit Point and Vitality. Ninjas are quick enough of theif efforts into maxing evasion and agility.

Dragoons I Heard that their regular dragon (The one thats always with them) does 50% of the damage that the player does, And if you "Call wyvern" it summons a second dragon that does 100% of your damage. So I guess The two dragons plus the player would deal some good damageimage
Not sure if thats true, thats only what someone told me.

    Thanks, Slik

Call Wyvern IS the 2 hour ability to call your pet wyvern. There is no 2nd dragon or wyvern. If your wyvern last over the 2 hour mark and he/she dies, then you can call him/her right back using your 2 hour ability again. You only can have one pet at a time in FFXI.

If you want to be a super heavy melee damage character then Ranger is tops for that.  They can be devastating as long as they have a good bow and arrows.  The down side to them is that they are very very expensive to play as the better arrows are not cheap and you go through them fast.

Drk are also very good damage dealers, though not the equivalent of a ranger they are far cheaper to play and have some neat abilities of their own.

Those are the two highest damage dealing primary melee jobs in the game.

Question, How much better are Rangers than Dark Knights?
    Is it a drastic difference?
Im leaning more towards Dark Knight right now, not cause of money issues eitherimage

    Thanks, Slik

  • MistiMisti Member Posts: 724

I dont know that its a drastic difference but my experience with drk is limited.  The rangers I have seen and grouped with out damage the dark nights a bit durring normal combat.

The times when the ranger really shines is when they activate one of their "once every 10 minute" type abilities like Barrage.  When they do that it wasnt uncommon for the ranger to do more damage then the drk using a ws and the magic bursting blm combined.

None of that makes a Ranger "better" then a dark knight though.  Just a heavier damage dealer.  The dark knights have more hp, better armor and can cast things like drain to heal themselves and harm the monster while a ranger has lower hp, crappy armor, and no way to recover hp durring a fight on his own.

They are both welcome in groups looking for damage.

As for Dragoons, many people consider them one of the strongest solo classes in the game.  Depending on what your sub job is your wyvern has different abilities.  If you pick a healer sub job like whm, your wyvern can both heal you and cure status effects.  If you pick a damage class sub like blm, drk or something they will use offense breath weapons and such.

yeah dragoons are very helpfull,i party with them a lot and they haves saved my arse a hell of a lot of times =).

In that case, Darkknights seem more worth getting, If you're a ranger and you're with a WHM, You cant really hunt well together seeing as how ranger can't take hits...
Thats one of my concerns , But also I'm sure a DarkKnight/Samurai will match up nicely to a Ranger with those great TP points image

Then theres always the trouble of buying expensive arrows to perform your best, I suppose you can always learn to craft them though..
DarkKnight/Samurai It is for me image , Thanks for all the help.

I have a few jobs in mind but there are 2 that have me thinking and I need some advice.

  • SlikSlik Member Posts: 26

Dark Knight/Warrior And Ninja/Warrior would be alot better, in my opinion image

    Goodluck image

    Thanks, Slik

  • MistiMisti Member Posts: 724

X-Zypher, those are both good choices but it just really depends on what you want your role to be.  Since you have warrior as your main in both of those I am assuming you like to tank.  Both of those subs would increase the damage you do a little.

The tank I group with most often is a Warrior/Ninja who dual weilds axes and he seems to do well.  In general though subbing Dark Knight is usually not recommended as you will have almost no mana to cast the drk spells.  This combo would still work imo though.

Slik, Dark Knight/Sam is probably a very good combo but no, you wont out damage a well equipped ranger with it in most cases.
