Hello all,
I just got an email from Obsidian Games that indicated Armored Warfare is now in open beta. I was a big fan of World of Tanks for many years and I'm looking forward to giving this game a try. WOT needs some good competition.
I'm a newer streamer and I thought this would be a good game to cut my teeth on. I've never played AW before and I'm going to be starting from scratch and sharing my observations as a new player. Come check it out!

At any rate, thanks to all who dropped in yesterday to offer advice. It was a big help! If you are an experience player or somebody who wants to have a look at the title, head to my twitch channel at twitch.tv/purplepoloplayer! I'll be here all night.
In answer to your question that the op has disregarded, the main difference is the obvious era of technology.
WoT is old tanks, AW is new tanks.
Also, AW has more graphically intensive gameplay. Different engine it's built on, and I'd debate as to whether it's superior or not to WoT.
Outside of that, from what I played, AW copied everything it could from WoT. UI, Garage, terminology, realism (or lack there-of), controls, strategy, etc.
I'm sure some will eventually argue that they are very different games. But, maybe this will help make it easier to determine for you: The similarities between War Thunder: Ground Forces and World of Tanks is no where near, and I mean NO WHERE NEAR as close as the similarities between WoT and AW.
So, the learning curve is a bit more about mastering the control of the tank itself as well as the other things like tactics, maps, aiming, angles, penetration ratio, spotting, etc.
I personally found WoT to be the more fun of the three games, strictly speaking. I can play it joyfully for a lot longer periods of time than I could with WT. AW I think I may have enjoyed if I had a better PC, but as the situation is now, I was intensely disappointed with it, which I think is sad as I was so looking forward to a modern tank game.
Hope you enjoy whichever you choose
I have to disagree with this post. As far as game play goes, I think AW is much better in many aspects, most importantly balance and speed of play. So far, I can't think of anything that AW does worse than WOT. It's as if Obsidian set off to make a sequel to WOT, considered the major complaints about WOT, and made a better game. Monetization, artillery, camouflage mechanics, movement, the community (there's much, much less toxicity), and balance are all done much better in Armored Warfare.
Lastly, War Thunder never struck a chord with me so I never really played it and I therefore can't make any comparisons.
I am going to fire up the stream shortly and continue with the grind. I've been enjoying AW immensely and a number of people have popped on the stream chat to offer advice and tips.
I have played this game a lot the last few days and it is fun. If you are like me and like to play arty be warned that arty plays a support role in this game as it currently is implemented.
I just played a game in which I was in a close knife with an enemy tank and got two direct fire hits with my big 120mm gun and only got half of it's health.
Playing arty in the game is a painful grind with many one shot deaths. You move. Fire and hit an enemy and do almost no damage except with a penetration hit. You are constantly moving and firing hoping you don't run into an enemy that will one shot you.
Hopefully there will be changes to arty mechanics in the game to make them more fun and more of a weapon. Hopefully there will be more to it than just supporting with smoke and illumination thingys
But the tank play is fun. The damage mechanics seem a bit soft though.
As others pointed out, it's very much like World of Tanks, so if you're looking at a modern warfare game with tanks that goes it's own path, check out War Thunder. If you like World of Tanks but want to try something different, AW is worth downloading.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

I've played WT tanks and it was pretty fun, but I've been much more invested in leveling my aircraft. WT tanks seemed pretty realistic even in arcade mode and I love their sound engineering.
I'm downloading AW right now and will give it try later.
I am back online if you want to have a look at the game.
@Stizzled I agree with you on the PvE. It isn't very imaginative, but it is nice to have an option to level up tanks w/o having to get pounded on in PvP. Also, the stock tanks do tend to play much better in PvP compared to WOT.
