If you're an old school gamer who loved UO or love Skyrim, do yourself a favor and pick up this game. I didn't buy the game at launch because of the bad reviews but I wish I had. I picked it up on sale at humblebundle.com last week and I can't believe how much fun this game is. Insane.

Anyway, if you have a few extra bucks to kick around and are looking for something old school with amazing Skyrim like graphics, give it a shot.  =)

ESO in many ways reminds me of AC
  • DelCabonDelCabon Member UncommonPosts: 258
I too find ESO reminiscent of AC which is by and large on the top of my MMO list. So as an "Old school" gamer I absolutely agree with the OP.

After playing beta I convinced myself that ESO, while having some very strong features for me, was not worth buying. Quite by accident I found myself with a free pre-release and gave it a try 6 months later. Now its the only MMORPG left in my gaming rotation.

I have been incredibly impressed with how well Zenimax has reacted to player feedback and built on the more positive features that I have enjoyed.

It's about time for ESO to develop a free trial. I suspect you're not the only one who will try it and like it after having given it a pass due to some of the early days knocks.

It's the best MMO at the moment.

I agree that it's a fun game, but old school it isn't.  It's a fun take on themepark.

ESO is good but it is not an oldschool game at all. Not even close honestly.

Doesn't take away it is a decent game though.

I picked up this game about a month ago.  Cant stop playing it, having a blast.  Just wish consoles and PC all played together, other than that, best new MMO I picked up in a good while.

I saw a guy in chat a few days ago say "This game is awesome! I can't believe I waited this long to try it". Chat went on for a bit longer, but the guy waited for the same reasons as OP.

I wish I could remember the word he used instead of "awesome". It was like it was a superlative about 30 years past it's time lmao.

Alot of MMO players seem to go through this "ESO is actually awesome guys!" fase. So did i myself. Not going to hate on this game cause i actually thought it was good too! Let me just say 1 thing though.. /flame mode on: PLEASE. REMOVE. VETERAN RANKS. It's stupid and grindy and destroyed the end-game feeling entirely (for me). /flame off.

Hope you guys are having fun though. I thought it was an awesome MMO and had tons of fun (except for the VR) part.

You know it is the ONLY big title i have not tried yet,i saw a different picture watching videos but i definitely cannot judge the game as i have not seen enough or played it.

However i feel a game if it is any good, should have the confidence to offer a trial,i only need 1 day even lol.

I might eventually try it somewhere down the road, who knows Steam usually offers some sale price.

For the record ,i never liked Skyrim, one of my biggest let downs of all time.I even went out and bought a PS3 or was it PS4 i don't even remember, just for that game, now that system collects dust. Now in some kind of fairness,i did hear reports that the PC version was way better,i was a dumbass buying the console and game when i could have just bought the game for PC.

Old UO,Skyrim was nothing like old UO and i did like that game.BACK THEN not now.My standards for game design are now MUCH more demanding.

This game def doesnt have skyrim like graphics lol, its not even the same engine. As for comparing it 2 UO, you really gotta stop making stuff up.  Uo was, and is a non linear sand box, with a hard to understand level system with 100s of skills, and a crafting system, that even if you spent the last 15 years on it, you would still make better stuff. Vrs ESO which is a super linear quest hub grinder, with RVR pvp haha. How you ever came up with comparing it 2 UO is beyond me.

As for it being old school, its a 100 percent a new school single player mmo. With grouping almost not even in the game. With no open world PVP, no death pen to speak of, and the crafting system is as linear as you can get. Literally the crafting in ESO is grind same a materials to make better stuff, with a slight modification with braking down other items. But in ESO every crafter is the same, vs UO where people look for items based on who made them, because you have to know what your doing to make items in UO.

So please stop spreading this lie about old school UO and ESO, your gonna set people up to fail is what your going to do.
  • HorusraHorusra Member EpicPosts: 4,411
Old school is way less pvp and more pve.  UO is about the only old school pvp and it was not the most popular old school.  EQ and AC were pve based.  Owpvp and old school is a fallacy.

I have a few friends who have no intention of getting this game because of bad reviews. One told me, "if it has enough bad reviews then it must be a bad game." To which I always say reviews are nothing more than glorified opinions.

ESO is in my top 3 of all time favorite MMOs.

Might be a good thing then that ESO is nothing like Skyrim, perhaps you might enjoy ESO, although i also think that them having a free trial of the game is long past due, you can get the game fairly cheap at the moment from Amazon, but digital downloads are still expensive, and i would not recommend anyone buy the game as it is without some serious research into it first, even if only to watch a few youtube lets plays.

My interest in ESO ended immediately after I played through the official storyline. It was definitely not worth $70 that I payed for the game and the mandatory minimum subscription for two months. A more appropriate price for the experience I got from the game would have been $10-20 top.

they screwed us with the subscription and the game feels like it has no soul, all we wanted was an elders scrolls game that you can co-op not a dirty mmo!
  • scorpex-xscorpex-x Member RarePosts: 1,030
The game really does need a demo / trial.

i have bought a few games based solely on player reviews alone in the past and have been let down every single time. it seems like most gamers who are the most vocal only like stuff that is different or innovative, regardless if it is actually a good game or done well, at least IMO

ESO for an mmo is indeed single player driven but it's done pretty well and the sheer amount of content for a recently released game is pretty mind boggling, especially considering the speed of the new content they are pushing out the door since launching on console.

and it doesn't need a sub anymore? in terms of bang for your buck, ESO is the best in the business in my humble opinion.

I've been playing ESO on and off since launch which means ESO is a good game for me but no way it's an old school. It's beautiful and sometimes even fun but it's kinda off with all factiion wide guilds and lack of proper group interface and such. Just my opinion but I miss EQ style long-term buffs and such (even pulling a mob was a minigame there). I love ES lore and that's the main reason I play ESO.

I forgot how much of a troll-fest this place could be, been a while since I've posted on a regular basis. One of you I recognize from back then, still at the game I see. Looks like it's generally a little better these days though.

As far as old school vs. new school, that's always going to be subjective and you could argue that til the cows come home but that doesn't mean I'm here as a paid advertiser or I'm telling lies so stop with the troll b.s. please.

The game itself is a lot like Skyrim, at least graphically etc. But there is a lot of old school feel to it, at least I sense it. The world itself is beautiful and realistic, I consider that old school these days considering most games are anime or cartoony-ish. It's awesome, feels like you're actually in the game instead of in a cartoon.

Another reason I get that old school feeling is some of the features like opening chests in the world or finding treasure maps, UO was awesome like that.

Overall, I haven't enjoyed playing an MMO this much since UO and SWG. It's a friggin' blast and underrated.

If you disagree, fine, no worries. It's not the end of the world when people do that. No really, it's true.  B)
