Big Picture Games has announced that it is now accepting sign ups for the initial round of alpha testing of Darkfall: Rise of Agon, a reboot of the original game. While no date has been set yet, devs say that the first round will include 500 players with new groups added with subsequent waves.

I wander how this is going to turn out. You have two different companies with the licenses to bring back the original darkfall. So two original Darkfall games running at the same time. Considering that the original darkfall did not do amazing by any means I wander how a small population split between two different games is going to turn out. I hope I am wrong here and both games end up doing good, but I think this could have easily been money better spent on other things then trying to bring back this game. Seems even more silly with the fact that two different compaines are bring back the same game 2 times.

This is funny.  The original game FAILED mainly because people used lots of bots to make superheroes since there were no skill caps.  The original game was a piece of crap and the 2nd iteration won't be any different.

Well congratz to those that wanted the game back. Hopefully it will be everything that people remember from the time that they lost it.

Alpha test what?.. do they even have the licence yet?

Sounds more like a signature list to present to AV to show interest... but they already recently did one of those themselves and enough interest wasn't shown for them to bring a classic server back.

    Thanks.

The team behind this one is transparent and communicating with the community very well. Can't believe I'm saying this at this point but it genuinely looks like we have a really good thing going here.

Nothing beats the experience of the original DF when it was running. It was such shit but we loved it. People looking to recreate that, we'll see.

They need to do a reboot of DAoC, old frontiers, PvE is still needed for gear etc.

I loved Darkfall except for the need to spam skills to level them up, resulting in people just botting their way to high skilled characters. If they removed that I would be all about it. Signed up anyway. We'll see how it goes.

They can call it Darkfall: Return of the Bloodwall. That actually has a nice ring to it.

The original was in the shadow of the WOW era, but is was far from a failure. It had solid communities on the USA and EU servers. The game encouraged tribe mentality in players. It had issues with hackers too, but it was a true MMO, one that just needed some fleshing out, not to be binned for a simpler version trying to appeal to the mainstream. If only they addressed the fleshing out of the game they could have grown it like Eve online grew. DF1 was rough around the edges, but it was a step forward for the sandbox pvp MMO genre. There was proper player politics, the world design was very well done, I've never seen a better done open world than the original Darkfall. Logistics were part of the moving your army around to try take over other clans lands as it was a big world. If this new company fleshes out the parts that were being asked by the community in DF1 then this relaunch has a good chance to start small and grow. Not even Black Desert captures what DF1 did. The DF1 developers were also part of the problem, their leader was dishonest about the future and DF1 and let players invest time into knowing they were going to scrap it for Darkfall lite.

The original was completely broken, but these developers can't see past their epeen to fix what needs to be fixed.  If you are looking to reminisce in the original design, then stick with this version.   I don't know why anyone would want to as we all know how it ended.

Thanks for the support guys n gals! Can't wait to be able to give an alpha launch date for those who have been waiting for this game to return for 3 years!

To the few comments in the thread about the game being a grindfest: We hear you, the power gap between new and vet characters was definitely too big. It's the first thing we're going to address! Fleshing out the game with new content/mechanics to improve the sandbox and adding specialisations to diversify viable combat roles are two of our biggest goals.

Darkfall was ahead of its time and in our opinion stands alone in its own genre in many ways. We're going to take the amazing base potential created by Aventurine 6 years ago and turn it into the comprehensive sandbox game giving players true freedom that it was destined to be.

Hope you all join us on the journey to get there it's going to be fun!

How you can qualify a game released in 2009 with emphasis on design and gameplay of MMO released in 1997 as something "ahead of it's time" is mind boggling...

Never had a chance to play the original Darkfall and Unholy Wars never interested me. I'll have to keep an eye on this.

There's not one MMO with combat that compares to Darkfall. Not even close. It might not be your cup of tea, but it still stands alone as the best 1st/3rd person Pvp combat in an MMORPG.

    No kidding.

Sometimes it's crystal clear that some folks need to spend more time actually playing the games before spending time commenting on them. Happens far too often in these parts.
