Big Windows 10 patch breaks Windows

QuizzicalQuizzical Member LegendaryPosts: 25,507
Let's see here.  Logitech Gaming Software won't run.  At all.  Trying to launch Elsword reboots the computer.  I've tried several times, with the same results every time.  Trove does load, then crashes within seconds.  Even LibreOffice is unable to load files, so it's presumably not a GPU problem.

But hey, Microsoft added their priority stuff.  Now you get desktop ads for Office.  The search bar that used to search for files on your computer now opens a browser and does a random Bing search.  So does trying to launch a troubleshooter in Control Panel.

It's getting late tonight, but tomorrow, I'll probably try to revert to an earlier build.  I sure hope this doesn't turn into having to reformat and reinstall everything.

Strange, everything appears to be working fine with mine. It may be because I'm on the windows insider release though.

Well in all fairness Logitech Gaming Software has been crap since forever. It's broken off and on since I was using Win7. Compared to the Razr software on my son's laptop LGS is just crap. I have to use separate software for the F710 controller too.

I'll install the patch and see if I can break my install along with you. Then at least you won't be alone. :)
I can't seem to get rid of my MX518 gaming mouse. Though, I do love my Razor Anansi.

Funny, I got rid of my Razer mouse specifically cause Razer Synapse is the biggest pile of dung software to ever exist. Resource hog, constant massive slow updates the require comp restarts, glitchy profile switching, always wants to be online and just all around one of the worst software programs i've ever used.

Logitech Gaming Software is not even close to as big a pile of junk as Razer Synapse, no way man.

Agreed. I am still using the original naga mouse and had trouble when installing the mouse on a new pc build as it tried to force me to use synapse..bleh I had trouble finding the older 3.03 driver software for my mouse...I now keep the old driver on a usb stick.

As for win 10 ...what do you expect from an OS that wants to spam you with ads....lol

But I agree the lack of Win10 drivers for the F710 forcing the use of the xbox driver which makes it a pain as the base mappings are not the same is frustrating... be glad when I can order a Steam Controller in AU

Huh. If @Quizzical is stumped then somethings not right!

Myself I've had nothing but smooth sailing with W10. But I also have Cortana and search turned off so I don't have an issue with ads or any such shit like that. That would suck big time. I use a Naga mouse but never install any software for it. No need to, it works fine out of the box. Totally useless junk to slow down a gaming computer that software is.

    Good luck @Quizzical!

Win 10 has been smooth sailing so far, ican say im surprised, i even have (somewhat) retired HDD with Win7 that i prepared if things go wrong, but so far no problems in 2 months.

I use Sharkoon Fireglider and software works as good as it ever did (without any problems)

Didnt get any office ads also.

Did use Win 10 for a few weeks, but the patching often causes problems that can take time to untangle, in the end i decided to call it a day and revert to Win 7, at the moment i think Win 10 is more akin to an early access beta release, maybe when its finished i'll try it again, i just don't think its ready enough yet for general release.

I've been using Win10 Pro since the day I was offered to upgrade, I've no issues whatsoever with it.

Few things to mention though, first check for update to LGS. I've updated mine not two weeks ago and it works without issues. Secondly download O&O ShutUp10 and it'll offer you a lot of options in one place to disable most of annoying features Win10 does, like that bing search and the rest. Even though you can disable most of these annoyances in Win settings, SU10 will have it in one place at a few clicks of a mouse.

Quizzical, I always enjoy reading your posts. But I seem to remember you saying just a couple of weeks ago  "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? You should have taken your own advice and stuck with Win7 for at least a few more months!

However I'd bet you are trying to stay on top of the new tech, so have fun with that. Me, I'm just a plodder and a non-professional. None of the new features of Win 10 really interest me (touchscreen - bah, I have one tablet and it's android, Cortana - no thanks, synching - don't need it, Cloud - I don't get all the hype when storage is so cheap, Metro Interface - I'm a big screen PC user and I actually like my desktop icons/themes/Aero/etc., and so on.). I will take another look at Win10 just before my chance for a free upgrade runs out. But I'm actually seriously considering sticking with Win7 until I get a new computer. And seeing as my current 2 1/2 year old machine still has the power of almost three new generation consoles - and all the games these days are console ports anyway - that next re-evaluation of Win10 might be a while.

Note - anyone looking to block the Win10 upgrade spam, the forced download, and the possible upcoming actual forced upgrade should take a look at this cute little tool.

This wasn't an upgrade over an older OS.  This was a clean install on a new computer.

If the Logitech software were the only problem, I wouldn't blame it on Windows.  But most of the programs I've tried that worked fine before don't work now.  Elsword rebooting the computer is a particularly nasty one.

Running Windows 10 and it patched today. No change. Logitech software is running with no problems.

I tried reverting to before the 1511 patch.  It's basically a service pack, even if Microsoft didn't officially call it that.  That did get Elsword to run rather than rebooting the computer, but some other things were still broken.  So I decided to just nuke the whole thing and start over.

I'd been having way too many stability problems with this computer:  it crashes more in an average week than my previous one did in an average year.  It's possible that something got messed up early on when my memory settings weren't entirely stable.

I'm not sure that the Windows 10 reset did as clean of a reinstall as I intended.  With the first install, it wasn't able to find an ethernet driver, though this time, it did--though it could plausibly have found them on the USB drive I had plugged in.  And it also managed to install AMD video drivers on its own, though it's plausible that it could have done that after it was able to get online.

I do now have the Logitech Gaming Software running on the new 1511 patch.  Now I just need to reinstall everything else.

Apparently the patch really did completely break Elsword.  There are multiple threads on the Elsword forums complaining about it.  I don't know if it's Elsword proper or Game Guard or what.  So the clean install of Windows didn't fix that, but it did seem to fix some other things.
  • PepeqPepeq Member UncommonPosts: 1,977
One has to ask themselves one simple question:

Was Windows not working prior to the patch?

If you answered 'no' then... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Just because they push a patch today doesn't mean one must install it today.  In fact, if you wait, you will undoubtedly get a patch to fix said patch... which means this... nobody should be installing any of this stuff for at least a week or two past release.

Upgraded to windows 10 from 8.1 at work, but have yet to do it on my home PC as there are way more drivers on this rig than on a work machine.  I'm not even sure what would happen if I tried to do the update.

So, do you think Microsoft is responsible for releasing drivers patches for other companies things?

If they don't work then turn to Logitech & Elsword for fixes, not Microsoft's responsibility.

Also the patch is working just fine for me.

considering windows 7 is one of the most poorly optimized OS for gamers, it seems rather silly not to upgrade at all, even windows 8 / 8.1 is a massive upgrade over windows 7...

Been using WIndows 10 since the start of the year with the insider previews, recently, i got annoyed how it kept completely reinstalling windows everytime there was a new insider build and it would break logitech and razer software, so i did a full fresh install of windows 10 professional and since then everything has been smooth sailing... no more preview builds installing every other day and breaking shit etc...

windows 10 is a fantastic operating system, i think i had the office 365 add, but it was in my action center not actually on my desktop, but yeah... basically if you're using a windows insider build you need to reinstall logitech / razer software everytime it installs a new build... it doesn't just upgrade your previous build it installs a completely new version of windows 10 and messes with a lot of stuff....

if you can upgade to non insider retail build... it's much better.

I was not happy that a patch broke most programs and pushed me to wipe Windows and reinstall from scratch.  That did fix most things, though not Elsword, which seems to be broken by the patch for others and not just for me.  But it worked before the patch.  Though yes, KOG will have to fix it.
