I was over at a buddy's house drinking last night, asked him how he was enjoying the game (he actually kept his preorder). He said the game was alright, but it was doomed and a total flop. I asked him why, and he elected to show me instead of just telling me.
Logs into his character, shows how many people were forming groups (2), and how many were LFG (3). Total number of people on the server was about 200. He said it's like that every night. During peak hours apparently there are about 1,000 on. And this guy is on the "unofficial powergamer server", so it's always apt to be busier.
So tell me; what kind of future does a forced grouping game have when you can only play it at certain times of day? Granted, the 200 timeframe was late at night, but any MMO worth its salt will have more than that on even at the deadest hours.
Nobody bought this game. The kid at EBgames said he's sold 2 copies since it went gold. Given the amount of money that was poured into development in this game, and the fact that it's literally a 4 day sprint to max level/max equip if one wants to necessitating constant new content being added, and the fact there's nothing to do but run dungeons...how long does anybody really expect this game to stay up, or at least stay supported? Turbine is going to lose their ass on this one, and you know they love to bomb a sinking ship.
The argument before launch as to the lack of community/people talking was it was beta...well, apparently that's still the case--it ain't beta anymore. It's been live for close to a week now and almost nobody is playing it. If you're a night owl, forget about even trying.
This game flopped.
Comments
the server I was on last night was packed solid. This was about 3:30am
The game isn't even on shelves yet. The only people playing are pre-orders. If there are 200 people on at the lowest tiems and 1000 at peaks on all 14 servers, the game is doing fine. 14,000 people playing at peak times before the install disks are even out, think about it.
well i was ind the beta and will agre that the game will be a flop i got to lev 6 ind 2 days and cap is 10 you have to do the same quests alot of times even the small ones becors you get less xp the more you do the same quest and thers only about 150 quests ind the game so you got to get the xp whare you can when its still worth it so i think when those who buy the game have playd it about 15 - 20 days and trayd the diffrent classes will have to wait for an expantion and how long will that take.
You, you, and you: Panic. The rest, come with me.
What world are you living in? The game went gold on Monday. It's on store shelves. It's just tucked away because nobody has any interest in it. I was just at EBGames again today putting my preorder in for Oblivion on the 360 and they had a whole stack of DDO behind the counter. The copies aren't moving.
I thought it was being released this Monday. I was in the store Thursday getting BFME2 and didn't see DDO anywhere. I apologize if you are correct. Still it's hardly time to call a game a flop IN THE FIRST WEEK.
Yeah.. I just bought it at wallymart today. I thought I'd give it a 3 month subscription before completely slamming it.. maybe I'll end up enjoying it. Who knows...
Okay.. I wasn't gonna post this. But, yes it seems doomed. Just after an hour of playing it. Is there a world?? What the hell. I was expecting so much more from DDO. I think Im just gonna flip out if this is ALL instancing.
Have you been following the development of this game at all? Do you always buy stuff you know nothing about? In case you didn't know (like the rest of us about eight months ago) it IS all instances. The only world-like area is the city where you go to get your quests. I can't feel bad for you though. This has been common knowlege for a very long time.

Yes I have been following it. I did read there was allot of instancing but not all of it.
God this calls for the Post of Posts.

The preceding Forum Flame Form was constructed for use on people not worthy
of actual thought or effort in being flamed. People so STUPID that a simple
copy/paste and a few check marks is all that's necessary to properly relay
the flamer's contempt for the flame.
You have been identified as such a person and as such, this flame was
brought to you in under 10 seconds of your post being read.
Your anecdotal examples don't prove this game has flopped.
DDO has not flopped.... There are plenty of people in game and I usually have my LFG flag up about 3-4 minutes before I get a group, and I also get invites WHILE I'm grouped because I'm playing a rogue... and in THIS game, rogues are highly desirable. In fact, all the classes are highly desirable... thats not because Turbine did a wonderful job of balancing the classes, it's because D&D did it 30 years ago.
The city is absolutely packed at all hours and nobody in game is complaining.
At my GameStop they are sold out of this game, at three of the four EB Games in my town they were sold out as well.
Turbine has done a wonderful job of putting D&D online - now all they have to do is make sure they keep the content coming. Content is easier then mechanics... ask SOE and their SWG franchise all about that one. This game has mechanics that work.
I took a flier on this title because of my loyalty to the D&D pnp game and I'm glad I did. I've played all the major MMOs except WoW and I think I've finally found the game I've been looking for.
No offense smelly, but you're lying. And everyone who's seen the game knows it. I know a number of people who own/play this game and they ALL say the game is dead at night. Dead as a doornail dead. I've seen it with my own eyes.
All classes being desired? Tell that to a high level ranger or bard or a sorc at any level...sure, they'll get taken in, but they're never "desired".
I know...the truth hurts. But it's the truth nonetheless. This game has MAYBE 25,000 subscribers--and no telling how many are going to split once their 30 days are up. As for new players? Unlikely for a hwile. Anybody with any savvy at all will know that in a move of desparation, within 3 or 4 months Turbine is going to lower hte price of the game to 20 bucks ala EQ2 in hopes of drawing people in. So why pay 50 now?
Packed all hours of the day. That's priceless.
Also, don't go making stuff up. You honestly expect anyone to believe you went to a Gamestop AND 4 EB Games? If you're gonna lie, at least make it a convincing lie.
Aren't you putting the cart before the horse?
There are store that are still waiting for their copies and you're complaining that there aren't enough players?
Come on man, complaining about legitimate problems is one thing but this?
No offense? Offense taken.
I've played at all hours and yes it's been packed. Perhaps not on all servers but I can speak for two servers that I've played on... packed. Since you don't actually own the game, and all you're going on is "I have a friend who owns the game", how about holding off on calling people liars who have it, own it and are playing it? Your "I have a friend who owns the game" excuse isn't exactly convincing either.
Someone is off their meds. No I didn't go to four stores. I went to an EB Games in Grand Rapids MI and then a GameSpy in Fort Wayne, IN and they called the other EB Games stores in Fort Wayne for me (because I buy from them regularly and that's good customer service) - they found me a copy finally after 4 calls and had the guys on Stellhorn Road put one on hold. So I actually went to 3 stores and had 3 others called on my behalf - only one store had copies.
Gotta point out that since this game IS instanced throughout, AND group-centric... the majority of players at any given moment are NOT gonna show up on the LFG list.
People tend to get in a group and go from dungeon to dungeon in the same group.
HELLO WORLD
Is this game worth spending $100 to get then pay for each month?
BTW MMO_Munk can i use what you typed above lol it owns

You know, it's *really* painful to watch you flop around like this. Truly. That isn't a flame or an insult, just a statement of fact. "My buddy said this, the guy at EB games said that, etcetera etcetera anecdotal fabricated evidence...FLOP!" It's obvious YOU want the game to fail. Unfortunately you're not going to get your wish.
The Inns are constantly packed when I am playing, which is anytime from 7:00 PM till midnight weeknights, and *all bloody day* on weekends. I get group invites when I'm at the Inn selling stuff, or visiting a collector. I get tells asking me to join ready-made groups. I see people everywhere running from one dungeon to the next, and even my friend, who'd felt very unsure about DDO because it had no cracting (she prefers crafting over any other part of a MMO) is loving the traps, doors, retracting bridges and killer quests in DDO.
Everyone I speak to and group with in the game are loving it. It's the breath of fresh air we needed in this clone-of-a-clone-of-a-clone world of MMOs. No wonder you don't get it.
Go have another hot steaming Bowl of Boredcrap.
I like it. $100 to get though? it cost me 50.
It's not a game for everyone. If you are looking for solo play, crafting, a huge open world, a player based economy, and grinding (not always a bad thing) then I would look elsewhere.
This game is VERY group-centric and is focused solely on questing. I used to play PSO years ago on my dreamcast. This game reminds me alot of that.
See, what you fanbois fail to realize is that at one point, I *had* preordered this game. I was in numerous stages of beta, and even tried a couple days of the head start. I got a character up to level 8 at one point. I know this game. I know what it does. And I know that if my friends sya "good luck finding anything to do other than start an alt at 3 am because there's nobody around", that's how it goes.
I also know there's a stack of them sitting at our local gamestore--and there are only 2 places in town to buy this game. The other is at the Fred Meyer (sort of a Wal-Mart type place...except with decent merchandise and customer service). I was there tonight--and THEY have a load of games as well.
Trust the kid at EB Games? Absolutely--the kid knows more than most. And I know him pretty well, since I buy a couple of games a month.
So what am I going to believe? My friends (not just the one I was hanging out with the other night who showed me what kind of turnout the game got, but others who play), and the kid at the game store, as well as my own eyes both from beta, preorder AND seeing it a scant 24 hours ago...or some random fanbois on the internet who are claiming the exact opposite of what the masses are saying? Hmmm, let me think.
For the record, even the DDO forums have had some threads about lack of players. But I guess they're all lying too, eh? I also noticed skimming them over today that there are already people that are maxed out at level 10 and have beaten the top boss in the game. Wow, it took them less than a week to do it...yup, that's the sure sign of a game that's going to last a long time. Right.
