The biggest thing that put me off Fallen earth was the post apocalyptic setting, I might have enjoyed it more if there was more colour and life to it.

TSW works well for me as a modern day fantasy setting, the way the story is told gives me a better sense of immersion than any other game. AOC was nice as a low fantasy game, but that had plenty of lush natural areas.

Not being a fan of post apocalyptic settings is purely subjective, I don't like them,  it's the skill of the developers, writers and artists that can make or break a world.

I used to be heavily into dark and dreary themes for movies and games.

I generally prefer forests, deserts, icy plains, lava, etc. now.  Sci Fi can be also fun.

I'm not really sure why I was able to enjoy really dark themes when I was young without getting depressed.  Perhaps I enjoyed the suffering a bit at the time.

It's because back then suffering was a foreign concept but now you're experiencing it in real life.
I would definitely say that I suffered more as a kid, but also thought less of it.  Perhaps I even took enjoyment out of it to an extent because that seemed to be what was accepted.  If you were being bullied physically constantly at school no one would take action to help you.  Even if you told a teacher.  If you had an ailment of some kind it would be suck it up.  I was used to dealing with pain when I was young.  That is not the case so much now. I've used more of a problem solving mentality to get healthier and rid myself of a lot of ideas that would lead me to physical pain and damage.  Perhaps i just feel pain more acutely as an adult because I don't have as much of it.  I do suffer from self stress, but I'm sure a lot of people do.

    False dilemma.

Why does a player have to choose? Plenty of people play both fantasy RPG (WoW, Dragon Age and what-not) and sci-fi (like Fallout 4).

That's true, but Fallout is post apocalyptic.  I'm not saying to take that setting away, but it can trigger depressing thoughts easily due to the wasteland environment.  Obviously this is not the case for everyone as a lot of people play Fallout.  I generally prefer a brighter world myself.

No argument about individual preferences. Clearly it is your prerogative to like or dislike any specific game.

How about Mass Effect series then .. much more brighter, and space based, rather than an apocalytic world.

Most people that play MMORPG want to escape reality, like me, i want to go into the world that beautiful.

Unlike Fallout 4 where most of the map is a wasteland, Medieval setting game is better.

The place where you can see the water, jungle, epic castle and travel back to the time when world has no pollution..

away from guns....only bow and arrow, sword and chance to be the hero.

I hate playins scince fiction mmorpg, it has no nature in it, full with steel and robotic stuff....its unrealistic..and no jungle no river....my heart is with the nature...

and i cant play modern setting, because real world has better graphic and i cant escape into another mess

Totally understand what you mean, I like the medieval/fantasy setting better in games as well.

I vote for a new MMO: Cake vesrus Pie, set in the open world rooms of a bakery and pie shop. Intense 2 side PvP, fluff cash shop dressing and seasoning, but no potions to decrease your baking time or anything game breaking.

I guess marketing would twist our arm and it would end up being called: World of Cakes and Pies, or Game of Ovens.

I like how people  belittle every topic of discussion in gaming and think it's cleaver/funny.  It's true that most things are personal preference.  That doesn't mean that there isn't a discussion to be had for which one is better than the other.  All most people get paid at work to do most days is discuss what they would consider as the best way to do x or y.  They usually have such discussions ad nauseam.

I personally prefer fantasy MMOs or RPGs as opposed to Sci-Fi MMOs or RPGs.

    I dislike medieval fantasy.

I find medieval fantasy to be the height of tedium. It has been done to death, its old and boring in my opinion. Same old classes, same old magic, same old enemies. Unless the mechanics / gameplay is exceptional, I'll just end up bored very quickly. Medieval fantasy is also just as dreary / depressing as post-apocalyptic setting. Lots of brown and grey colours set against an overcast sky. I'm British, I live that shit every day, I don't want it repeated in my games.

I much prefer high fantasy, unique worlds etc. You can have the same classes if you want, just give me an interesting world with interesting creatures that I haven't seen before. For example, Warhammer. Roughly same types of armour / weapons / magic as a lot of medieval fantasy, but set in a vastly more interesting world.

Sci-fi games / MMOs are harder to pull off. The evolution of warfare has been towards ever greater firepower at ever greater range. This means that ranged classes become more frequent in sci-fi games but I don't feel that gameplay mechanics have yet to make ranged combat fun. You either go the twitch route, which is more realistic but seriously dull, or you go tab-target / skills route, which is more interesting but just doesn't feel right to me. I also think one of the most exciting things about sci-fi is the vehicles, but very few sci-fi games take on the challenge of vehicular combat.

Plenty of examples of successful ones: Fallout series, Mass Effect series, Deus Ex, .... even Wasteland 2.

Sci-fi MMOs are harder to pull off, but as solo games they do far better.

Fantasy theme is probably a lot more romantic and beautiful than Sci Fi in general. The things that are awesome in Fantasy are Dragons, swords, and magic. In Sci Fi it's mostly spaceships and fleet warfare.

The fact that everything out there is fantasy theme proves its popular. then again, Star Wars is the hottest thing in the world right now and probably trumps Lord of the Rings in popularity =)

Are you stupid? Star Wars is what fantasy IS. Star Trek on the other hand is science fiction. Fantasy doesn't have to be dragons swords and magic to be fantasy.

Star Wars is kind of a nice blend of sci-fi and fantasy. You have swords, lightsabers more specifically, although there are non-lightsaber melee weapons. There's magic via the force. Plenty of sweeping adventure type elements, outside of the typical war in space theme of typical sci-fi. The battle in the arena in Episode 2 was pretty fantasy-esque, but with laser guns and laser swords.

Palladium Books' Rifts is another good blended setting. One I wish would be turned into a proper videogame of some sort. However, Rifts might be a little "too big" for a true videogame setting.

I prefer fantasy vs. sci-fi, but I absolutely love it when the genres get blended a bit too. I also really love the sub-genres of both like cyberpunk and steampunk.

It's interesting that many of the near future sci-fi settings are often not really attributed to the sci-fi genre. Like Deus Ex, you could consider cyberpunk. Fallout is post-apocolyptic. Both are sci-fi, but don't seem to be widely regarded as sci-fi.

Seemingly, people seem to think more of things like Mass Effect, Star Wars, etc, Star Trek, etc., where it's higher tech and more sweeping with use of space and space mechanics.

as you said, both cyberpunk & post-apocolyptic are sci-fi. Do you actually have statistics, or websites quotes that say cyberpunk is not sci-fi?

i think most just regard them as special sub-genre of sci-fi.
