What was your biggest MMORPG letdown?

I hope no one else has posted this, but I'm curious to know what other peoples opinons are on this.

Well, the thread title pretty much says it all, but what is your biggest MMORPG let down, and why? Mine had to be Guild Wars. It was a great game, and all during the BWE my guild was ranked top #10 on the ladder, however it just wasn't what I was expecting at release..

Well tell me, what was yours?!

Most recently, RF Online. But all together ill have to say SWG. Right now I have my eyes on Auto Assault and Pirates of the Burning Sea, im in the AA beta and I dont see it going on my "letdown" list, im hoping the same for Pirates.

It used to be Earth & Beyond, but it's been supplanted by a new king: D&D Online.

A game with so much potential, name recognition, an established system...EVERYTHING going for it, and what does Turbine do?

Turn it into a forced grouping, 100% instance running, worldless, communityless, game with no player economy to speak of and no crafting whatsoever. A raging, RAGING disappointment.

And judging by launch sales, the masses agree.

A tie between EQ2 and Dark and Light.

Admittedly EQ2 actually turned out to be a decent game and is better than WOW in my opinion but I had my hopes set on so much more that the letdown was huge despite it's decent quality. EQ1 pvp item-loot servers were the best time I had in gaming ever and I was hoping for that to continue. I knew EQ2 wasn't going to have PVP at the start which was also disappointing and even now that they have them the loot system is too "easy" if you ask me.

Dark and light was the other game I pinned huge hopes on and while I haven't tested it yet from all accounts it will never live up to the hype. Between it and EQ2 I feel like their failures have left me without a game to play.

If either of these had of turned out close to what I was expecting I would be playing MMORPGs right now. Instead I post on MMORPG.com waiting for something to be released that will pull me back in.

I have to agree that DDO blows horse chips. I just got RF Online though and while not perfect it will kill time in between my BG grind sessions (very pathetic ones with my work schedule) while I wait for the new WoW expansion.

I am also in Auto Assault Beta, but the allowed test times last time I was there did not work with my work schedule so I have not checked it out recently, I really like the idea of this game and have a pre-order down.

At any rate, I'm not sure how long one can be but when I get enough rating points I'll probably put up a review fairly panning DDO in my opinion. To be honest I don't think DDO can even be called a real MMO except in the loosest possible terms since it doesn't really have a 'world' to it

RF Online was my biggest letdown. I had been waiting for the English release for almost a year. Codemasters made a big mistake when they let Fileplanet give away free beta keys. I was sorely disappointed in the game but otherwise I would have bought it.

SWG for its course after release. But if we're talking about expectations prior to release, then it'd be Dark and Light (SoG) for being extremely buggy and with no meaningful PvE content.

    Currently playing:
    * City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant.
    * City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.

EQ2 and Guild Wars of what I played.
Of what I haven't played DDO is a game I really had high hopes for.

i think every online game i've played other than EQ, UO and maybe DAoC to a lesser extent. the list of games that have been just utter drivvel is unbeleivable.

eve online was decent, but i just dont have the time nor the patience to play a game like that.

  • baffbaff Member Posts: 9,457

City of Heroes nerfs were my biggest let down.

Eve barely functioned, Matix was a joke, but City of Heroes started so well and then nerfed the fun out of my game.

2nd place would go to SOE for the introduction of the BFR.

Although the nerfs in CoH are bad, EQ after LDoN fall back to their nasty side was also bad...

Sonic Adventures in DDO is the worst let's down.  They advertise REAL D&D!  You go, all drooling, all hoping...hopping around!  You expect a damn good game...and BLAH, ACTION game!  WTF!

*jump up, jump higher, reach that hidden chest*

If I want to play an ACTION game, I will not buy a game labelled REAL D&D!  Wake up call!  The D&D fanbase as well as the MMO fanbase are not necessarily action fans!  At least, I was able to test it with the pre-order and to not buy it later.

DDO is a nice game, but it is NOT a real D&D game by any means, it is NOT a MMO...it is Sonic Super Adventures put under a D&D skin.  It is the worst let's down for me...mostly because I am a D&D inconditional fan and I am also kinda a MMO fan as you all know.

Pretty much all MMOs are a letdown for me. Once you played one you played all of them. Nothing really new or revolutionary in any of them. Just more of the same.

But SWG had to be the biggest letdown of them all. SOE and LEC was handed the most perfect set up. Someone would have to want it to fail for it to get bad. The thing could have made billions. Yet they messed it up from the beginning.

    EQ2.

No where near as good as EQ1.

A total letdown as it hasn't lived up to it's promises, constantly evolving but never maturing.

Wow I really didn't expect this many people to reply, but when a game sucks, and its worth complaining about why not!?

EQ2 was ok for me, SWG I never played, Lineage 2 was pretty bad, Matrix Online was decent, WoW wasn't all that great...

    Theirs my rant!

Guild War is neither a MMORPG. It's JTP Rpg style.

My biggest letdown was easily RF Online. Still shivering upon how stereotype it was :/

EDIT: Sorry my absolutely biggest letdown was SWG: NGE!!! And of course the CU. Second will be RF online

    wwiionline and swg.

Over the period of several years the developers ruined wwiionline by severely nerfing the axis, so I finally left wwiionline and decided to come back to SWG, the very same week NGE hit SWG.  This time I was smart, I read the SWG forums BEFORE subscribing.  So basically those from SWG can relate to those from WWIIONLINE.  I wonder what other types of games degraded DUE SOLEY TO DEVELOPMENT.

  • no one mentioned this but, WoW was my biggest letdown, although i enjoyed playing it with friends, but 90% of us quit the game because we didn't get what we expected and told to expect from blizzard, which pissed alot of us.

it's so sad that once a great game that all of us has been anticipating and waiting for let us down this much, even camelot which everyone got bored of has better PVP imo.

  • MoboidMoboid Member Posts: 14

I'd say WoW as well, i was expecting too much though, wanting somthing new and inovative.

EVE is hovering on let down too, as the lack of control and involvement with the game is turning me off it (i'm an explore chracter builder/experimenter type player)

  • xacebopxacebop Member UncommonPosts: 93

eq2, while a good game was a letdown to me since the original eq was still so much better.
    wow, for being too easy.
the matrix online purely for sucking
    ffxi for the asian invasion.
city of heroes, just wasnt what it could have been.

and dark and light of course, the biggest failure of them all.

Anyway, l2 let me down alot, so did FFXI, but not cuz of the asians, but because its kinda boring lol. I still love both games though >.<

Wow really let me down as well, although i never got past 20, so I shouldn't really judge.

Horizons, going bankrupt didn't help. Game had so much potential, but bad management, terrible support (especially in Europe), awful launch and pitiful server lag and so many bugs I don't know where to start killed off any potential. Really talking about the potential when David Allen was still a part of it, not the piece of shit you see now. Horizons used to be like a running joke amongst other mmogers, only SoE's SWG has now taken the podium and everyone seems to have forgotten the months long court case(s), etc etc. Heck you remember now don't you ::::06::
