I was an original player of SWG and it was GREAT until the combat upgrade...I LOVE the Matrix movies but MXO just never really did it for me (the grind was BORING).
I have been playing FPS's ( FEAR, Quake 4, Doom 3, Farcry, etc.) but miss the missions and community of playing online...I like PVE and PVP...
So what is THE BEST online game going right now?

EVE is the closest thing to pre-NGE or so I've heard.
PVE Blows.
PVP Rocks.
Sandbox MMO which means the whole game is centered around the players instead of the PVE, quests, and equipment of the game. Basically, it's centered around the players instead of the game. Politics, you can make a real change in the universe, etc.

[edit]Oh, and for the record, I was initially turned off by the whole spaceship only aspect of EVE from the start but after playing with it for a little while I was able to get past that. I still don't know if its going to be a game that I pay for but I would definately suggest trying it out before you write it off completely.
