Laura was spot on in this debate in my opinion. We can all agree that gender doesnt influence peronality, or at least most of us. But what does affect intelligence and personality most of all? Experience. People are born into this world not by choice, and as we go through our lives we experience different things. Stereotypes are bore from our own experiences, and from the day you are born you are gradually influenced whether you realize it or not based on these stereotypes. I'll give you an example, think back boys to when you were little.. did you play with toys? If so, which ones? A majority of little boys often played with action figures, and as they grow boys are encouraged to take on the more physically demanding things in life (such as football, rugbee, track, etc.).
A majority of little girls however are raised playing with dolls, having sleep overs with other girls, and are raised with the more material and delicate things in life (such as beauty, clothes, jewlery and such.) Now this is not to say that everyone is raised this way, nor does everyone stay this way the rest of their lives. However, you are very impressional at a young age, which is why toy companies have a hay day making their commercials flashy and involving to grasp the attention of the boy or girl they are targetting their product towards. Every barbie and polly pocket commercial you will ever see will always involve girls, every mutant teenage ninja turtles and GI Joe commercial youll ever see will always involve boys. This is where our stereotypes are bore, you may say they are blatant lies but many of them are put into place because they do have a grain of truth in the, no matter how small it may be.
So Shojin how come their are female athletes and boys who are fashion designers? Experience. Eventually we all become aware and begin to make our own decisions, whether we see it in real life or any other media outlet we all see something that captivates us, and gravitate towards it... however a majority of people have a tendency to bring their past experience into their future endeavors. Just like it takes a certain type of person to be an althelete a c.e.o or chef, it also takes a certain type of person to be a gamer. Many view gaming as an "escapist" hobby but I believe this is a misjudgment. Gaming isnt an "escapist" hobby but rather an "explorers" hobby. Just as certain people like to travel the world to experience new situations (such as an American going to Amsterdam to, well.. *ahem* do I need to finish that really?) so does the gamer explore virtual terrain to experience and create things they couldnt in real life.
While I believe it takes this "explorers" mindest (or inquisitive/curious mindset whichever you prefer) to play video games which in a sense makes us all the same on a basic level, we will tend to drag our past experiences on what we think is cool in games. Ask any hardcore PVPer about their childhood and current lifestyle, more often then naught youll have them tell you they're grew up playing rough games with others and are very competetive. Most Socializers will tell you they grew up with alot of friends and often helped people on projects be it school work or doing chores, etc.
So experience shapes us into what we do in life, and we take our experiences into what we like to do. Girls arent stereotyped to be more into the aspects of socialzing and personal appearance because they of their gender, but rather because society influenced girls to care more about these things as they grew up be it through toys television internet or just real life. Growing up we saw more girls playing with dolls and drawn to appearance and socializing where as we saw guys playing sports or technology (which is where the whole stereotype of only guys being on the internet and most of our technological fields being filled with males), and this is where the stereotypes come from, and more then likely the thought behind this debate.
To close Id like to say that everyone is different, as we grow we become more diverse. This is largely due in part to our experiences, we go through life and experience more and more... and while we change and drop some of experiences a majority of them stay with us, especially experiences from our younger days. We are raised based on social norms, as it is the easiest way for most parents, thusly we all begin with roughly the same base based on gender, what we become and whether we reject these experiences is up to us. So while we mold ourselves into different individuals and gamers, we bring our fonder past experiences (both recent and past) with us and apply it to our gameplay.

Just on the border of your waking mind There lies another time Where darkness and light are one, And as you tread the halls of sanity, You feel so glad to be unable to go beyond. I have a message from another time...
Since plenty of studies (though too lazy to link some) have shown that males and females tend to react differently to various situations by choice in real life, this does carry onto the virtual world. (see the link 2 posts above me!)
I disagree that in *most* MMOs you can choose how you want to play if you think about it. Most have combat as a focus and if you want new content, you need to gain levels by fighting to get it! This is stereotypically a "male" game. So if you ask the typicial girl in that game, the tendancy is that she likes the same things as the guys do, else why would she play?
Hence there is two key assumptions I make:
1. Both sexes want to progress and experience new content. If not they wouldnt play for long. (You'd get bored fast if not.) 2. Be successful in that game. (In whatever way they want to define success)
Example 1: WoW PvP Server.
Combat is a huge part of WoW and more so on PvP server. Stereotypically thats a 'male' type game and really its the only path availible to success.
So 1. You can't progress in a realistic way without it 2. Success for the most part is measured in terms of it.
So if you ask 5 girls and 5 guys on WoW PvP how they play the game, they are more likely to say the same thing since its largely only thing that offers progress and success. While lots of girls do like the 'male' game, I beleive there is a higher proportion of females playing on RP servers and involved in guilds since that adds social goals as a form of progression and measure of sucess.
WoW is a very good game which really helps both sexes enjoy it regardless of its focus, a very important thing to remember.
Example 2: Old SWG (R.I.P)
OSWG by contrast offered a varied amount of playstyles. With progression and success not tied to any one of them. You gained content by dancing away in a cantina, you gained content by hunting on Endor and you became successful at excelling in *your chosen field*. So did the sexes play the same way in OSWG?
Well Im sure most people who played will agree that a lot more Real life females that drifted to the social professions relative to men. When given a chance to progress and succeed in stereotypically 'female' ways they took it.
But OSWG was also buggy and frustratingly unbalanced, these things turns both sexes off the game! But then I still loved it.
---------------
So yeah, I reckon there is a trend for females and males to enjoy different things but there is alot of crossover that shows that what someone has between thier legs is just one part of it!
Certainly it is just as fascinating to see men take to "female" styles of play when given the opportunity. I think this shows shows that physical sex is one thing but the mental gender of a human being is not so black and white.
Anyhow, a games designer should keep in mind having things for the "male" and "female" type gamer is one thing but if your game is rubbish then both genders will know it and react!
Females definately cause more drama than anyone else. Since playing MMOs in one form or another since 96, I can pretty much garuantee that as fact. I've seen more guilds ripped apart by two women going at each other than any other reason.
I think it is nearly impossible to categorize any type of MMORPG player based either on sex or how you think they play. I have grouped with many females in various MMORPGs (at least they seemed female and had female like voices on Vent, but who knows ^_^) and the only factor that I have seen consistent is that female gamers dislike Corpse Camping, and other various griefing tactics. These girls would be all about PvP and very hardcore about it, but when it came to standing near a naked body waiting for it to rez so you could kill them again, they seemed pretty adverse.
This is just a side note, but another thing I have noticed with ALL female gamers in general is, they never seem to be decent gamers. They either seem to be really good or really horrible. I am not sure at all about this, but when running into them in RTS, FPS, MMORPGs, etc I either get stomped on or stomp them. I never really encounter close matches.

Get real. I don't ask you to prove you're male. I know more female MMO gamers IRL than male, and I know more D&D female gamers and DMs that are female. And that is coming from me, the female president of my university's RPG Group with almost 200 members.
Pwned.

Only thing I have noticed about female gamers in the 6+ years and 12 MMORPGs I have played (some long, some short) is that the women tend to:

Haha. What're you joking? It's changed what is accepted in society, but you still have to act a certain way to be acceptable. In most cases, reversed.
Gamers seem to be stuck in the equivalent of some sort of "1940's attitude" - "you mean women can hold jobs and be intelligent!? No way!" It's kind of sad really on their part.

I rarely find a gamer with that kind of attitude. So that statement is completely off basis. And what you said, had nothing to do with peers, or society making them act a certain way off of gender. You were speaking of a persons GENDER, not making them act that way.
Well wake up and spell the hormones. Being born female, or male, hard-wires you to act a certain way, to grow a certain way. Contrary to modern belief: Men and women are different in more than just appearance. And this CAN be proven scientifically.
So yes, your gender does make you act a certain way.

I'd not say it sounds mundane but most calming. Your day seemed rather nice, actually.
No burning bra videos... Tho maybe I'll find random ones if I do a search. Plenty of videos of guys drinking flaming shooters that set themselves on fire. That's not quite the same thing tho.
Mmm... Oh yes! Girl gamers... Right... the topic...
In most MMOs people mistake me for being a guy since I don't act all girly and SQUEE and such in game. A number of female gamers, I know, have taken up playing male characters to get away from being harassed by horny net geeks (HNG). In my playing a female NE in WoW people automatically assume I'm male. Cus really... People think most lvl 60 NE female toons ARE really guys in real life.
They're probably right.
I think there's still a long road to travel til most people accept an online world filled with real life females.

rofl i'm giggling at some of the replies from 'female' gamers. hillarious stuff.....
i still dont beleive many girls play MMORPGS, they just dont.. i've been playing them for my entire adult life and i have honestly only met 2 that i know for a fact were actually women, compared to the hundreds, possibly thousands of male gamers i've met (worryingly around half of them must have been playing female characters). women just dont fall into the same catagory as most guy gamers do.... my mrs doesnt particularly understand gaming and wouldnt know what a MMORPG was, which is the way i like it.
i dont have a problem with women playing MMO's atall, i just remain extremely dubious that many infact do. sure 2 of you on this thread state that your female (for all i know your not), but considering the other 10-15 male posters i think you'll agree women are in the minority here.
That may be true but its like trying to believe a candidate for president would actually do what they say. You just have to take the person's word for it. They may claim to be women but you can obviously tell if they are or not. If you pay close enough attention you can tell the difference between female and male gamers by the way they act. From what I've found out guys are just really gunk ho. Women fall anywhere inbetween.

I'm a wishful thinker. I'm essentially wanting to believe that everyone I talk to is female. Even if they are on teamspeak with a butch accent playing a male axemaniac.
I find girls are my best defence for weeding out the ringers. I can't always twig it, but the girls are 100% accurate. They loving outing fakes.
ive played in a games cafe and there where also girls playing but somewhere nice social girls ingame and just chat hang out in towns not realy in fighting .
But i know also some girls who are bloody fanatic and fight all the way and dont wanne lose.
But i know also guys who can fit in both catagories so dunno in games i think small differents but not real much differents.

Surfed the net, watched TV, hatched another plot to take over the world. Ate some cow. Drunk some beer. Squashed my chair. All very mundane.
I was hoping for a burning bra video to spice it all up a little.
And that's all I have to say for now... Cus I kinda wanted to stay on track w/ the OPs topic.
Cheers!

rofl i'm giggling at some of the replies from 'female' gamers. hillarious stuff.....
i still dont beleive many girls play MMORPGS, they just dont.. i've been playing them for my entire adult life and i have honestly only met 2 that i know for a fact were actually women, compared to the hundreds, possibly thousands of male gamers i've met (worryingly around half of them must have been playing female characters). women just dont fall into the same catagory as most guy gamers do.... my mrs doesnt particularly understand gaming and wouldnt know what a MMORPG was, which is the way i like it.
i dont have a problem with women playing MMO's atall, i just remain extremely dubious that many infact do. sure 2 of you on this thread state that your female (for all i know your not), but considering the other 10-15 male posters i think you'll agree women are in the minority here.

A female gamer is a female who:
* Works in the game development industry, or
* Regularly engages in the practice of playing video games (colloquially referred to as "gaming"). This can be from the most casual interest to the most serious professional gaming, where female players often draw extra attention due to their rarity.
