P55A-UD4P (Socket 1156) ram slots question

Asm0deusAsm0deus Member EpicPosts: 4,620
PC I am using is getting a little old but I would like to up the ram I have on it. I have always used dual sticks, for example I have 2x2gb right now.  My mb board P55A-UD4P (Socket 1156)  can use up to 16gb of ram.  Can I use 2x8gb in two slots or is there a limit of size per slot and thus I would have to use 4x2gb?

I have a fairly good OC, 2.6ghz to 4ghz and it has been going good for the last 4 or 5 years or so...not sure if I it will make my OC have issues just adding 2 extra sticks. I was looking at this g skill 2x2gb in the two free slots.

Alternately I could get this 2x8gb g skill  but its more expensive.  Also looking at these two as they need to fit under my Noctua NH-D14 cooler.

Advise please.

Depends on the BIOS on the board. For the most part, you can throw in the biggest DIMMs you can find and it will work, but it may require a BIOS update to work.

Also, the link you provide has the manuals for the motherboard, you could just download the manual and see what it supports...

Think I wont take a chance i'll just try the cheaper 2x2 sticks.  One thing that I was worried about is my OC, will it still be stable with 4 sticks?

Will just give it a try and see.

My antique is on my big screen and works pretty good, I can still play most of my games at max settings!  I am waiting till I get either the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive before I build myself a new pc...this one will go to my 6 year old, should be plenty good for him for a good long while.

1366 were notoriously finicky on RAM clocks. I wouldn't expect any overclock out of the RAM at all, and then feel lucky if you happen to get something.

*edit* Sorry you said 1156 - I have no idea how those do on average with RAM clocks - maybe you'll get lucky.
