A lot of the hardware we review at MMORPG winds up being the kind of gear we then get to keep. They’re review units, usually not intended for resale. Laptops and desktops are different though. They cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, and we must return them to the manufacturer once we’re done putting them through their paces.

How did the keyboard feel? I love to game on my laptop and im impressed with how comfortable my asus g series is, always wondered if msi was as comfortable, I can say the alien ware sucks for comfort.

It's a chicklet keyboard from Steelseries, so it depends on if you like the chicklets over the more traditional keyboards. I will say that I typed the whole review on it and didn't have an issue. :) Everything felt right where it should be for my hands.

Laptops are the spawn of the Devil. They should be burned at the stake, along with consoles.

Bill, odd that you kept it after not being overly happy about the video, SSD size and audio. After reading your opening paragraph I thought this machine would be a bit more "powerful" in video and sound.

I almost bought a new msi a few weeks ago ha-ha. But I decided to go with a meta box (clevo) it is truly amazing how far gaming laptops have come. I have a 6th gen socketes skylake processor 4.0ghz in the new laptop with the 980 card. Both cpu and gpu are upgradeable in the future. That's the main reason I didn't go with the msi because they are soldered to the board.

Have the GE72 6QF Apache Pro and I could almost have sex with it. It's almost perfect. Can almost run Witcher maxed out (Shadows is medium, and the nvidia hair is turned off).
The only negative thing I've noticed so far is that the computer is pretty noisy under pressure, but I guess that's to be expected from a laptop.
    9/10 would buy again. :)

Had an MSI gaming laptop for 2 years. Within the two year warranty it was either in transit to or from the repair center in CA or being worked on for 6 months out of the 24 months. The repair center, located in CA, had individuals working for them who spoke and wrote the worst English I've seen/heard from individuals who actually needed to speak English for their job. I had to ask for the supervisor after two days of the employee doing the wrong thing to the computer because he didn't understand English. The supervisor spoke only mediocre English, but at last finally someone who I could understand.

The motherboard crashed 2 weeks after the 2 year warranty went out. Never buying anything from MSI ever again.

Sounds like you got a lemon.  It happens.  I will never buy another Ford...

Don't blame you at all and I'd feel the same way if it happened to me but my experience has been the exact opposite.  I have multiple MSI items from video cards to All In Ones and they have been rock solid.

I have a MSI GT60. Within a few months of purchase started to get frequent BSOD. (3+ times in 4 hours play time).

Took it in to have MSI look at it. They upgraded the video card.

I still get the random BSOD.

    Will never buy MSI again.

    Hey Bill,

When stating that, "960M is about equivalent to a 760 from NVIDIA’s previous generation of GPUs" I cannot see from that statement if it's the 760M or 760 desktop version. There's a HUGE difference between the 2. Regardless, neither of the 2 760 GPUs compare to the 960M according to http://www.futuremark.com/hardware/gpu/ but rather the 770M GPU with both the 960M and 770M GPUs scoring in the 5200-5300 range (the GTX 760 comes in at 8660, GTX 760M at ~3500). Just an observation :)

I just bought a second-hand MSI last month - last year's GT70 2PC Dominator with an i7-4810MQ CPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 1TB regular HDD, and a GTX 870M GPU (similar performance as the GTX 965M) . Games like Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3 run very smooth in the 45-55 FPS range depending on in-game location and how much action is going on. This is using predefined Geforce Experience Optimal settings, which mostly are in the "high" category. I am extremely happy with my purchase and would not have second thoughts about buying MSI next time around.

Has anyone who owns(d) an MSI compared them side by side with comparable ASUS laptops? Better yet anyone owned both? I am on the fence between the two and used both companies for motherboards for years. Looking to spend around $2k so trying to gather as much first hand info as I can.

    Great review!!

Knowing MSI it will have a prize tag to match.
But with a "notebook" cpu and gpu.
Real men drop that money and buy somthing real usefull
that has a Core i7-6700 and a GTX 980 (non M) in it.
