Everything they've shown in past live streams as live demos with the exception of the SQ42 "Live Tour" is in Alpha 2.0 right now. I'd say they have a pretty good track record.
Shooting for the hardware high end is probably a good thing. But if they are having to use a $15k rig to make this alpha example look decent, it's not a particular testament to their progress.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
Always impressive to see the breakthroughs in new technology in this and
other games like Elite:Dangerous and No Man's Sky. Amazing what you can
do on PC without the shackles of console downward compatibility. Add to
that VR and voice control and the immersion factor will be
breathtaking.
Have fun
I'm guessing console bait? You realize that consoles are better than a lot of people's pc's. The "downward compatibility" you speak of isn't even an issue.

They do explain in the stream linked what they're doing so not to make the game impact too heavily on peoples rigs, think even in the plant preview they give a brief explanation
"since the plant could never fit in memory, the planets surface is procedurally generated on-demand at different LODs as the camera moves"

Even an average priced Gaming rig ($500-$700) would run circles around
an Xbone or PS4. The problem with consoles is by the time they hit the
market their components are already old tech in the PC world. I'm not
saying consoles are bad but to say they match the power of even an
average gaming PC is just crazy talk. A console's main benefit is hardware uniformity. It's much easier to optimize a game when you know it's going to be played consistently on the exact same hardware. Optimizing and troubleshooting a game for the PC market can be a nightmare because no two gaming rigs are exactly the same.
The real issue with Gaming Consoles is the longer a generation remains on the market the more outdated the tech they are built on gets while the PC world just keeps upgrading to keep current. The Tech the current generation of consoles is built on is already years old and considered pretty obsolete in the PC world.
Before everyone gets to crapping on consoles, they are the reason the Witcher 3 is as big as it is, according to CDProjectRed. Without potential console sales, they could never have made the game as large and detailed as it is...would never sell enough PC copies to pay for it.
They do serve a purpose.

Don't get me wrong as my post was not intended to "Crap on consoles". Just to point out some facts. Consoles do serve a very important purpose. They make the bar for entry into the gaming world very low. When little Johnny goes into Game Stop to buy a game for his Xbone he can just choose a game and doesn't have to worry about hardware compatibility or "Will this game just crash on my setup". He can buy his game with the confidence that it will work and be playable. This is not the same case for the PC world.

Disclaimer: I used "Little Johnny" as an example of someone who may not be as technically inclined or knowledgeable about hardware setups as your average PC gamer. It was NOT intended as any sort of "Console Kiddie" reference.

I challenge this statement, not because I'm a console gamer (I'm 100% PC) but that price range is literally on equal footing with consoles. You're not going to run circles around them with that budget.
If the only issue you have with all that I wrote is the price range I used I can agree that it's debatable. The rest of my points stand however. I've derailed this thread enough at this point however so it's time to stop.
Deja'vu and a lot of people with amnesia, including from the press.
This
is just "breathtaking" as original pitch video, which was just smoke
and mirrors but was pretended as the game in an advanced status to be
completed "soon" and the breathtaking "live gameplay demo" of the about
two release in just a couple of weeks after April: Star Marine (FPS
module).
And the attitude in the week of the release of ED
Planetary Landings (that low budget game that manages to make CIG always
ashamed with his 100m dollars project and 4 years of development),
reminded me this case:
"The U.S. Justice Department accused IBM of intentionally announcing its
System/360 Model 91 computer (pictured) three years early to hurt sales
of its competitor's computer."
As their persistent false advertising attitude wasn't enough.
But
better than that is to watch the breathtaking real live demo that Chris
Roberts made in one of the most powerful rigs of the company,
certainly, on site, which was a "brilliant idea of Ben Lesnick to do"
according with him, before starting the demo.
I am sure that you will feel very comfortable to buy more $2500 JPEGs after watching this. Don't miss. It starts 2h28m:
As we know, the things take longer to come to your hands, because CR/CIG and other developers explained that first, it must to pass of the high level of exigency/quality of Chris Roberts to come out so you have fun. They even created something called PTU and claim that the things stay on PTU until they achieve a "release-ready" state, because out of that, is for you to have fun, etc. So, witness the high level of exigency/quality that Chris Roberts have.
With that in mind, probably you can have an idea of what CR would consider and claim as BDSSE
That hate and jealousy ooze forth with every progress update this game makes. Why I wonder why?
Misery loves company. Some people only find a spark of joy, when they can bring people down to their level of misery. Others just want to get a rise out of someone, and have no interest one way or the other. Yet there are also those that are just purely jealous, because they can't afford to do what someone else is doing. Envy can make someone act and/or do things that are unbecoming.
In War - Victory. In Peace - Vigilance. In Death - Sacrifice.
That was in real-time. Not pre-rendered. The demo'ed it live.
But, of course, none of this is real.
That... might have been cool.
However, your vitriol is off-putting, and a symptom of something deeply wrong with SC's community, imho. Wouldn't it have been easier, or at least slightly less guileful, just to say 'hey, check out this cool seamless person-to-planet-scale video'?
Second, the video; it's an ad. It's so much an ad with that giant logo splash at the 1:49 mark, and the clever title at the beginning of the video (from pupil to planet). This is marketing, folks; the type of stuff they teach you in business school. It's designed to build brand confidence.
Third, we've been here before:
February 2011:
March 2012:
Personally, I'm glad to see CIG tackling this. I want more companies to be making this type of game. However, your video looks an awful lot like marketing, and this isn't exactly the groundbreaking territory I think you want me to think it is. As I mentioned before, your sarcastic one-liner is a symptom of something deeply wrong with the Star Citizen community.
Right now, I'm really not sure if I'm going to be playing this game after it comes out or let it go off quietly into the night without looking back, because A) Chris Roberts, and oh God, the community.
That said, nice video, if a little BBDO for my taste*.

Looks to me like the "planet" is simply a pretty backdrop for the predetermined landing areas. Doesn't look like you can just fly anywhere and land on the surface. I'm having a hard time finding anyone who will comment on this, which makes me think this is the case. If so, color me unimpressed.
EDIT: Before I get attacked, I just want to say that the game still looks great, and I'll be playing for sure. I'm just a little concerned that these "planets" aren't exactly what they're being sold as.

The 2 min video ("Pupil to Planet") is basically an ad. The 15 min video with the real time live demo is not an ad. You find the link for the 15 min video above.
