Is the UI a Problem?

imageIs the UI a Problem?

As I play in each of the closed beta weekends for NCSOFT's upcoming Blade & Soul, trying hard not to go too far beyond level 20 or so as to not spoil the game when head start begins on January 15th, a few issues poke their noses into my consciousness. The first, which we'll talk about here, is that the UI for Team Bloodsport's game is so informative that it's bearing on the verge of overkill.

I found it cumbersome. Sometimes in quests I didnt get what I was to click to move forward. I found the combat options in the UI no fun as well. Over all, the UI made me feel disjointed from the game and focusing on the UI to figure out what to do next.

Yes the UI is awful and yes I can post screenshots of me in game to show I play and can comment in such a manner.

It took some getting used to but unless the UI is affecting the performance of the game itself, like with Devilian, TSW, and others, or is really huge and in the way and I can't change it, I tend not to gripe about it. It could be better though with more customization options.

I've been playing BnS since technical alpha, and I mostly agree with the above posts, and it hasn't been changed a single bit since then.

I will say, it's no where near as " cumbersome", cluttered, initially overwhelming, clunky or as confusing as BDO. That said, UI improvements or not, BnS is still a Tera killer imo.

The UI was not as big a deal as the game is just HORRIBLE.

The UI was kinda bad, but the thing I had the most problem with was the chat. It has so few characters its like trying to tweet, so typing anything longer than a short sentence had to be broken up, as well as no ability to copy/paste, and sorting channels which were always flying text all over the place was absolute crap, so trying to talk with anyone was just pain.

not really for me, the crashing in under 5 minutes constantly since CBT2 is.... I tend to play a lot of Asian based mmo's though and they all have bad ui so I think I am just used to it.

The UI is customizable to make it less of a burden/cluttery.

The first thing I'd suggest you do is scale the overall size of the UI down, which makes it immediately more bearable.
You can make your minimap a lot smaller and transparent, while still being able to see POIs. You can do the same with the chat window also.
I also moved the item hotbar to a far-off corner of the screen.

I'd agree that when you first log in the UI is overwhelming but with just those suggestions the issue was sorted for me.

Hope you find a game for you that's less... horrible?!

I, myself, have really enjoyed it and can't wait for early access.

I actually had zero problems with the UI. Everything I wanted/needed was right there. Not sure why this article was even written. Granted, I haven't run a character up past 20 or gone on a dungeon run yet so that could change.

Also, I think Poopsicle is a fantastic name for a Devilian guild as it sums up that game nicely.

I don't really think it's too bad. I mean you can pretty much customize the whole thing you wanna see a UI that's terrible check out BDO way to cluttered, you think this one is bad..........

I like the game also and plan on playing it at least till max which won't take long, these games now days (max level in a week)

I'm a fan of minimalistic UI's such as in ESO. I don't see how some people with dozens of UI addons can even play other MMO's. Blows my mind. I was looking forward to B&S, but might have to give it a pass now.

the only person who thinks that the game is horrible is you,and im guessing thats cos your some PVE guy that doesnt like PVP game, thats most likely the reason, either way, this is 1 of most awaited games of the year, and people surely wouldnt wait for it if it was horrible game........

Well best way to overcome the UI is just turn it off if it bothers you that much. Even tho the UI is customizable and you can move the dialog frames around where you want them.
With the UI closed (Ctrl X) you can still use all the keys except it does pop back up when you use any commands to the chat box. With the limited number of attack keys and the mouse click attacks this game is pretty easy to play without the interface showing.
I think the UI is good except for the annoying tutorial text that should be fade out, mouseover stuff.

Im OK with the UI design. As long as it is customizable and let me remove parts of it im OK. The more crap they put on my screen the less interest i have in mmos. Im supposed to play the game, not the UI.

Took me ages but i managed to sort my UI to an acceptable standard certain thing si would like to remove though . its a bit too much

On default set up it is a bit much, but there is a customize UI setting on the gear icon on the lower right of the UI that will let you move items around, you can also untick options for those shortcut icons at the bottom. This was a bit disjointed from the UI setting mentioned above, but if you are into leaving the UI as is, you can scale it down in size in one of the game setting options.

I had a hell of a hard time re-binding my keys until I figured out some weird issues in the key config. I only mention this because it is related to the UI and how I wanted buttons to be laid out. It was so confusing, that I had to take screenshots of each menu section for each time I created a new character. Other than that, I really enjoy the game.

I can agree here. You can't rebind keys that are already bound with a modifier (x for example). One solution is to rebind everything to an obscure key (eg f9) then you're free to bind to any keys afterwards.

A little frustrating to do this on every character though as keybinds aren't saved.

The default UI is bad. It can be made a lot better with some tweaks. But overall - it's pretty mediocre.

It's not something that takes away from gameplay at all - so not sure what the big deal is.

agreed DMK - the funny thing is my GF is ridiculously picky when it comes to UI's...and she didn't complain at all - apparently she was having too much fun to care.

Some great news, they have adjusted the UI for release!

    http://www.twitch.tv/bladeandsoul/v/34157425

22 mins in explains what quality of life and UI changes have been implemented which include consolidating the annoying bottom buttons and allowing for making the chat window entirely transparent. Other stuff too.

The UI was never really an issue for me because of the customization options, but there are some great additions nevertheless that de-clutter the screen!
