Pre-CU RP level, as I found it superior

DuraheLLDuraheLL Member Posts: 2,951

pre-CU SWG is well known for people always talking about how great the roleplaying was and how nice people were towards eachother in general.

I have an analazys about how it could be that way.

Many things to get you off the heat were in the game, entire professions for roleplaying values, relax in a cantina watching real player entertainers, relax from a hard day of fighting with some slow paced in-deep crafting.

What I loved about the game was how fast you could switch from being a grinder and slaughterer into a roleplayer. Many times did I drift away into the RP'ing... Whilst being a Ranger I had all the time in the world to roleplay, I hardly ever wore any armor, only my nice camo cape and my orange camo pants. I traveled around in the open looking for mobs to examine their current values on their meat hides and bones.

I camped alot and always invited people into my camps and we sat and talked for very long time periods.

People in general treated you with respect unless they were roleplaying against you, which I appreciated. Many times you hardly knew you were roleplaying since it felt so natural. Like once I RP'ed I had broken my leg and a fellow bypasser came to my rescue and carried me over to the medical center.

Even in PvP people treated people with respect, of course in the beginning there was alot of chaos but it was as if the entire community acted like one piece that worked against the arrogancy to create a respectful enviourment.

Many guild I knew had strong policies against treating others badly, my guild had such rules, anyone breaking them and giving the guild a bad reputation would be kicked.

All I can remember was SWG's enormous social level, I did not care about how awful the combat was or how awful the content were updated for the better, I could simply play the entire game to live the universe, it was truly "My Saga". I will never forget it ... it will always lie close to my heart.

I must say your words hit it right on the spot. Pre CU was our game. The devs and SOE should have remain spectators and continued to watch from the sideline as we shaped our gaming world.

The following is something I added to CBS mailbag and to the SWG forum.

    ___________________

When I first logged on to SWG on day one of release, I was in awe of what Lucas Arts and Sony had created. I had never experienced a game like this before with such richness. I was in ecstasy from the visual accomplishments developed; looking at a school of fish in a stream at night and seeing the reflection of the light of the moon; sitting in some tall grass on Naboo and just watching the blades of the grass moving with the wind; walking from the city of Tyrena to Coronet on the Planet Coreilla; watching the sun set behind a white mountain cap.

All of my first experiences in 2003 allowed me to believe in my subconcious thoughts that I was able to live in a real Star Wars World with all the faults that we experience in real life. I could actually create a person in this new world and start my own Star Wars adventure. With all of the unique and complex skills, abilities and professions available I started thinking like Luke did on Tattoine about one day going to the Academy like all his friends.

The greatest experience ever was how I could describe SWG before the drastic and unnecessary changes. After SWG was released I gave up every game I had ever played. I had lost all desire to play any other game other than SWG.

I was beginning a quest to make Rekssk a strong fighter against the forces of the Imperial Army. I also had to make credits and decided to be one of the brave or crazy fools to venture on to the dangerous planet of Dantooine to mine for the highly sought after Dantooine berries. Those berries were selling like hot cakes on the bazaar. I remember they were selling so fast I couldn't keep up with the market and decided to give up my quest to become a fighter and bring my friends into this new credit making business.

Just from those things I just shared explains why so many veterans feel violated by what SWG management had done to our game. We had created a world within a gaming world that had become emotionally attached to our subconscious which helped SWG live up to their advertisment of this being, "The Greatest Experience".

I understand SWG wasn't satisfied with the misealy 200k members and so they decided to get rid of the complex game play for a faster pace, point and kill style of game to attract a younger audience so as to increase their member numbers. Well I started playing SWG when I was 37 years old. I bought an account for my son who was 16 years old. We both enjoyed every minute of game play and found it to not be too difficult to comprehend. The only thing my son and I had to be concern about was for him, making sure he didn't fall behind in his school work and for myself making sure I didn't forget I had a wife and a little one.

For SWG to admit they wanted to make this game less challenging and to "dumb it down" makes no sense. Youth nowadays are more brain challenged everyday with all this technogically available to them. Hell my son was doing basic programming at 15 years old at school.

When they said they wanted to make the change because it was too much reading...... Come on I bought the dang SWG guide and read it front and back. When the game came out nearly everything in the guide had been changed in the final product. To be honest the book was exciting to read, but truthfully it was a waste of money. SWG had mad so many modifications to the final product you couldn't really use the guide.

When SWG came out I felt George Lucas and his awesome team of engineers were setting a new standard in online gaming. I had believed that soon other companies would try to capitalize on SWG's uniqueness and start creating other ventures. Well I guess us rebels (game players) lost to the Emperor (mighty dollar) and were completely wiped out of the world of SWG.

Lastly, you probably wonder why all these veterans are still here in the forums even after they said they have quit or will quit? Because we are looking for Obi Wan to use the force to make Lucas Arts and Sony bring back the old game. Do you really believe this new gaming format will allow people to have similar experiences as I described? Do you think once people get bored with NGE they will be as loyal or stubborn to leave as we old farts are?

image I felt the exact same way. The fact that you were playing with players and not just npcs, looking to get trained or to heal bf, or to get better weapons or armor. Talking to real people with real emotion and stories and sharing it all was so nice. Having the chance to be rebel or empire and explore the riches of both sides was incredible. Being able to go into a cantina and have people greet you at the door and make you feel at home does wonders like you were actually out there doing a good thing for either cause. Then as time progressed they slowly were taking away from us bit by bit, or nerfed. Being abled to go to a town to see people want to train you to help you and help them was nice in my books, even looking for people, if there werent any you'd resort to the npcs but for the most there were people out there that needed you and you needed them, then poof and no more apprentice points, not needed. Its like SOE are trying bully tactics, we will give you something, then ok we had fun, now give it back. I don't understand why they decided to implement creature abilities, and with each expansion give a new better pet/mount when shortly down the road, oh guess what, you can't use that. My guild was comprised of creature handlers and to say oh for the better of the company noone is doing it so NERF. It was fun hunting with pets and showing them off and training them. Now we have the dumbed down 9 prof nge that was not welcome to begin with. I simply hate it. I came in at day one, and played for hours at a time when I could to immerse myself in the mythos that is Star Wars and work towards all my accomplishments, and now it is all for naught. Most people I know cancelled their accounts after seeing the attrocity that has become. From time to time I miss it and want to see it again, but know that time changes everything as this is in fact the dark times. I doubt we will see what we hope for ever again, and deep down if we do, I feel that it won't be the same again, considering they changed it twice so far.

We need a new special edition of a new hope, where smedley is sitting next to han when greedo fires first. we can only dream now.image

According to akewlguy and his various flamebait threads, SWG is not, and was not a roleplaying game. So you are all wrong.

imageok, this is MMORPG.COM. This is a site about mmorpgs. Star wars came in as an mmorpg. True it is now a crappy fps, a shell of its former self. Only if the devs could figure that out instead of looking to play wow to make an extra buck by copying a game and fall flat on their faces! LA made battlefront, if people wanted to play that they would have bought it. But as is the case SWG was a rpg that people immersed themselves in, hence Live the adventure. If it is not what the hell is it besides crap now?
