imageCash Shop Controversy Ignites KR Launch

According to a new report at Steparu, the Korean launch of Tree of Savior has come as a huge surprise, both in the fact that it launched ahead of schedule, but that the cash shop has come with some big ticket prices. For example a new hairstyle will set users back $17 or $25, more expensive than a real world 'do.

Who cares about cash shop. People who really want that stuff will spend the money. As long as it doesnt contain any items that make the game easier to play, ill be happy.

Why am I not surprised by the Cash Shop allegations ?

Afaik, P2W is perfectly acceptable in Korea. The only fuss here is that this particular P2W is a bit pricier than most previous versions. The scourge of inflation knows no bounds !

It's 30 dollars for 1 hairstyle in this game. It's insane.

Obviously you dont know the game. Its a pretty good mmorpg for old school rpg fans. It never claimed to be pay to win. Nor did anyone make claims of such. While yes it is free to play. Its one of the good ones. (if you're a fan of old school that is.)

I'll be interested to see what their pricing is in NA, and if it changes in KR based on this rather loud and clear feedback they're getting over there. That's what we call dropping the ball or making a bad impression, for a game that had a nice little niche to fill.

Question is. Did Nexon Kr set in motion the payment features or was it the developers? Because if it was Nexon Kr. Then IMC in no way would have to follow the same example.

That is such a low budget looking game, how can they possibly charge much ion cash shop for anything.Everything is so low poly nothing should be more than a couple bucks.
I am going to assume it had such a success in beta or Alpha that they figured they could go ahead and charger whatever.

To me it looks so bad i wouldn't play it for free let alone costing me anything.EXP boosts other game play boosts, nothing but a huge p2win especially since most of us value time over money and that is what they are selling along side other ridiculous priced items.

No way could this make it over here,it would be one server and a dead one at that.

I refuse to play MMOs with any sort of noticable cash shop, especially those that also have a sub. Glad that the "F2P is the only way to go nowadays" idea is starting to go away.

Except that did make it over here. There were 3 servers, with each reaching 50-75% capacity.
And as i stated before, you have to be a fan of old school games to appreciate this game.

Ragnarok style games are incredibly popular. The game was smooth, responsive and grindalicious when I played the alpha version. People in particular liked the updated graphics over Ragnarok for that nostalgic feeling. Not to mention them getting so many beta applications and positive feedback from the western community.

But ultimately it's a niche game for old school MMO fans. How they handle things must be exceedingly delicate, or that "one server' will definitely have population problems. Granted, though, they have multiple channels on each server as well. And typically you actually want to be alone when grinding -- or in a party. I found myself constantly switching channels to get a secluded spot of my own for rare drops and experience.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

Maybe they've been watching Star Citizen and thought they weren't charging enough for their cash shop items? Just a guess... :)

Nexon probably did have a hand in it somewhere, and IMC is self-publishing the international version so you're right, they won't have to follow the same example..That being said, a long time ago IMC did some really shady things with Granado Espada (supposedly those people got fired) but even still, they're not exactly known for their ethics themselves. Hopefully it's changed since that was a very long time ago, but this is their chance to really prove themselves and if they blow it, it's game over for them tbh. That pricing will not fly in the West, or apparently in South Korea for that matter and South Korean players are way more forgiving than other demographics are.

this game in my opinion is the successor of maple story ( maple story 2 looks retarded to be real, this game looks more like maple story 2 then the real maple story 2 does ) and the cash shop will not stop this game from being popular, cos lets be real, its nexon, they want money for any garbage item, feel free to check Vindictus or Dekaron, anyways the cash shop will not stop me from checking out this game,i g2 admit,im quite interested in this game, much more interested in this game then Devilian or ELOA,and im quite sure it will have atleast 10x-20x more players as it is then Devilian or ELOA.

As if it could exist, without being payed for.
F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

I plan to play this game. I have been following it the last 3 months:

    1. old school rpg graphics. handrawn i think, so it looks great, very clean
    2. great music
    3. grindfest (which again is old school)

If the cash shop is selling items at a high price to turn a profit that is fine, as long as people can't have the uber sword of slaydonia by paying 3 dollars.

It has tons of class possibilities, I really think you guys should give it a whirl when it comes out. though it won't be for everyone if you dont like old school SNES rpgs or grinders. it has what 200+ levels? can't wait. EDIT: actually if the uber sword of slaydonia was 3 bucks then yeah i'd probably buy it. i dont play F2P games very often but I will this one. i dont spend money at all unless its like 3-5 bucks for a cool glowy. So if i play this game, and it turns out i like it a lot, i dont mind spending any amount less than a 15$ sub. then i feel like i'm keeping it to an amount im comfortable with.

When it comes to these types of games, the typically had the whole $10 for a haircut that last 90 days kind've thing.  With them putting a deal up for $50 for a permanent version or something.  Standard practice, as hard as it is to believe for some.

What would worry me more is the speed boost you get from being a premium member and how you can train two abilities at once for paying, as well.  Wouldn't be an issue if you could train two characters at once, but one being able to get power twice as fast isn't that appealing to me.

Seems that some people on Steparu's site are saying you might be able tobuy items with power as well?  Wonder if that has any merit.

I like expensive cash shop cosmetics. It allows me to spot the idiots without even speaking to them. My only question is whether it's pay to win or not?
  • OhhPaigeyOhhPaigey Member RarePosts: 1,517
I got into the beta, I really don't like it, it has nothing to do with the gameplay, mainly the art style, UI, that type of stuff usually kills games for me.

It's not just a cash shop controversy. The game is littered with grame breaking bugs, gold spammers, bots, exploits, server instabillity and huge lag. The grouping/social server and the world/character server are seperate and the social server is down most of the time, so people can't group or communicate. It's just a mess over all.
