Albion Online - Why It's Worth Being Hopeful for the Future

Albion Online is many things, but it certainly isn't shy about its huge grind. In fact, where most games try to hide their grind behind neatly dissected levels and gradual spoon feedings of content, Albion displays it proudly on its Destiny Board—a map that helps you chart your progress through the game. "Look at me," it says. "Look at how many countless hours you will need to spend to ever wield the best items in the game."

Huh, is that really all that's available in the game still? I remember being excited for it about a year ago, and it seems like not much has actually been added content wise from the sound of this article. Maybe the author is missing some things or is it true that that's all there is at the moment?

Not that I mind, but my problem with some sandbox games is that it does get repetitive, but there is nothing wrong with that at all. The draw of raising livestock and farming in ArcheAge was fun at first, but then it's like I just got on a timer. Waiting for stuff to finish growing, harvesting it, repeat. Like I said though, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that but my problem is what is supposed to make all of these sandbox(y) activities fun is the engagement with communities. Older sandbox games like DarkAges Online have more of an old school community mindset so there seems to be more community interaction and roleplay.

The new sandbox games coming out are largely missing these types of communities and in my opinion these types of communities are what drives sandboxes and makes them fun and engaging. Games like EvE have that (even though I don't enjoy EvE as a game) despite the less desirable aspects of parts of the community (like griefers, etc). It makes me wonder why the newer sandbox games seem to be missing the engagement and more social aspects of older sandbox games. Maybe I'm just not looking carefully enough.

    Smile

I don't mind the grind so much But to the poster above me to the question about why games have changed so much I personally in my 20 years playing mmos of course it is the playerbase people these days are so "adhd" they have no time nor any patience whatsoever yet they want to play gmes that require it...I'm at a loss with that reasoning.

When I play with younger gamers it is all about getting to the end as fast as possible and want everything for free or at least a lot of things without much effort.

I prefer some grind as it is called because I feel I have "earned " rather then just have it handed to me and or my hand held to reach the goal to get it.

Is there PvP free/safe Trammel-like PvE in the game?

    If not, no interest.

I still don't get why designers don't understand that the vast majority of gamers don't like other players making choices for them.

Some players, many, many players WANT the sandbox experience without being forced to PvP when they don't want to.

Make PvP compelling, make things worth fighting over, make it FUN and make it entirely optional and you will get tons of players who want to PvP and choose to PvP.

    It's really quite simple.

Everything I've seen/read about this game doesn't lead me to believe it will be anymore *evolutionary* than any other top-down, click-to-move/attack game out there. It looks so much like a LoL/DotA with a crafting/worker system.

Is there something that I'm missing with this title?

    Nope

Still has potential, but seems they have a lot to figure out. Believe they said they have a to-do list for at least the next year of things they need to add/adjust to get to where they want.

Which sort of sucks for those paying/playing now as who knows what it will look like in a year.

It's not that simple, forced PvP requires you to make alliances and stresses socialization. Is it for everyone, not by a long shot.

But kudos to developers who make the game they want, not the game we think we want.
Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

Jury is still out on this game.  It has potential, but at this time it is not worth bothering with.

I am a closed beta tester. I haven't logged in for at least 2 weeks. There is absolutely nothing motivating me to log in. I never reached the PvP because there is a HUGE grind as a barrier to entry. You need T4 gear before you should even bother going in to PvP areas and most everyone out there is well beyond the T4.1 gear.

The author is right, many players may never make it to the PvP.

The game claims to be a PvP sandbox but you have to MINDLESSLY, without having any fun at all, grind PvE to death before even beginning to PvP.

Huge disappointment, would accept a refund in a heartbeat

I'm sure we will be given the option to buy the best gear or at least buy potions to reduce the grind significantly, so you can stop worrying.

If this game broke from its Mobile/IOS roots, it could be something really special.

Unfortunately the unoriginal/low poly count graphics are going to kill it for most people.

Doesn't seem like the writer of this article has really played the game.
Yes, there is a lot of "undisguised" grind in the game (some people do need "the cloak of daily quest" to find it more appeling). But for everthing else, this game is awesome. It's a perfect mix of what you want in a hardcore pvp game and a moba. The need for a community instead of being able to do everything by yourself is something that hasn't been present in a mmo in years.

If you guys are interested into the game, i strongly suggest you find some friends and start playing this awesome game. And for those who think that 10-15 hours of leveling is too much before starting to PvP, you need /played your hours of wow :P

Game has been in development far to long to talk hope and potential.

2d clash of clans like game. I wasted my cash sadly on something that looks very poor.

No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.

Amen brother. I bought access already so I'm checking it out periodically, but the grind is so bad at the moment I'm not going to burn myself out before the eventual wipe at release.

Already lost hope in this one. They have pushed back the release date and now it's not even going to be free to play any more. Game world is just too damn small for every one.

Paid to get in and gave it 3 good days of playing - it needs a lot of work to keep me entertained, sandbox is fine and all that but most of us are sheep and we need a little guidance to enjoy ourselves.

But, as the original poster suggested, I will look to the future and hope that it can add a little something. And for the record, I like the look of it, if you log in to moan about the graphics you're a doughnut - surely you looked at a screenshot before handing over your money.

Don't trust any MMO that sells beta access.

    My Reply:
You're ignoring the fact that the initial hours before PvPing are mind-numbingly boring.

I believe games should be immediately enjoyable. I'm the type of person who won't spend 2 hours watching a horrible movie and feel good about having wasted that 2 hours. Don't expect me to waste 15 hours before the promise of the fun. Give me a f***ing break

Excuse me, but your post is loaded with so much nonsense I had to respond.  To start with you will need hundreds of hours to start pvp and even then you will be pvp fodder at best even with friends.   About the only thing that makes sense in your post is the need to find friends because I agree that you will need them.  It is not a solo game.
