I am about to get final fantasy XI and I want to be an elf so I was just wondering if it would be better to be a thief or a redmage.

    Yes. :-)

Seriously, it depends on what you want out of your character.

A thief is a damage dealer--he is master of the sneak attack (which greatly increases your damage when you attack from behind a mob) and the trick attack (which gets additional damage *and*, if there's somebody standing on the same side of the mob as you, shovels the hate from the attack onto him). He increases the money and treasure a mob may drop, making him very useful when camping mobs with high-value drops. THF is good if you want to rack up decent damage numbers and will enjoy the challenge of maneuvering to properly set up your special moves, which require you to be in the correct position relative to the mob and the other members of your party.

A Red Mage is a support character. He is a jack-of-all-trades, being able to melee, cast offensive magic, and cast healing magic. However, this aspect of his character will fade as you level, as the fact that you're not foremost in these abilities catches up with you. Meleeing or offensive magic against Incredibly Tough mobs (which is what most parties exp again) becomes impossible as your lower level skill levels prevent you from hitting. You can still heal pretty good, but a WHM is better. Still, the balanced abilities make the Red Mage fun to take out solo, something few other classes can do. What you *do* get is support. You enfeeble better than any other class in the game; you can make sure your party fights a severely weakened mob. And you get Refresh at level 41, which can be cast on anybody in the party and gets them MP recovery--a very prized spell, exclusive to the RDM class. This is a good class if you enjoy hanging back and supporting the party...you won't rack up big damage against the mob, but you make everybody else better. You get to smile to yourself everytime the mob says "XXXX is paralyzed" instead of making an attack. You also get to be in demand, primarily becasue of Refresh, which is an ability people past 40 always want in their party.

Thief it is then! But one more question, Is a thief-Ninja a good combo?

It's been done... Not sure how good it is, but I know it's been done before. However, I think more common would be to go NIN/THF rather than THF/NIN.

I actually just got an idea of thief/dragoon because of the increased jumping abilities. Anybody tried this before that can tell me how it worked out?

Thf/Nin is the most used thief subjob. Reason being you get to Dual-wield letting you use two daggers or dagger/sword, dagger/club combos which during the end-game widens the weapon choice. It also gives you Utsusemi: Ichi and Utsusemi: Ni which basically creates shadows which will absorb the next 3 hits make you invulnerable to magic and melee attacks until the three shadows get consumed. (one attack will consume on shadow). Thf/drg is a so-so subjob but in all seriousness thief/nin is the way. But to be brutally honest, a redmage will have it much easier getting to 75 than a thief. Just fyi.

nope. nin/thf is just a bad idea if youre looking to xp. war is pretty much the only subjob you should sub as nin since you will be invited as a tank. Though Ive heard that nin makes for a decent DD Ive never really seen one in action. But I suppose nin/thf can be a good combo for farming.

nin on the other hand is the most popular sub for thf. dual vield, good agi for TA and utsusemi for pulling etc.

thanks everybody, I'll go with thf/nin it sounds cool with the dual wielding dagger thing.

I don't think THF is a damage dealer, not *really* when you compare Dark Knight, Black Mage, Monk or Ranger. Thief does give you big hit damage but I think other jobs may do better damage over time. (DoT) That being said there are some parties that require a Thief (Anything with a NIN tank, just about..) They are a very valuable job to level, and a fun job to play overall, as playing requires some level of "Play Skill".

Good combo's for THF are THF/NIN, THF/WAR, and early on in the game THF/MNK. There are possibly other s (THF/RNG?) but those are the most common.

As an alternative to RDM, an RDM will level faster because mid-game every party needs an RDM (or the less common BRD's) not so with THF, and if you like Ninja.. Max level RDM/NIN is one of the strongest combos in the game..

THF can also be hard to start as your first job because THF is more like a gimped Warrior till level 15. If you want my advice.. start off with WAR/MNK then go to THF/MNK till level 30, then unlock NIN and go THF/NIN.

Well, he's damage dealing *and* hate amanagement (with a dash of more loot). The great thing about THF, if he's played right, is that SATA (combined Sneak Attack & Trick Attack, for the new guy) nails hate onto the tank. Then the glass cannons (BLM, DRK, RNG) can blast away more freely than they otherwise could.
