Faction balance on servers

Hi folks,

I've been considering going back to WoW, but I find that there are still many issues (that prompted me to quit) that are still around. However, one issue is particularly interesting, and I wanted to see if anyone wanted to explore it further.

As many will know, there are issues around 'faction balance' between Alliance and Horde on most servers. This does impact the game to a certain degree, how much so usually depending on how badly the balance is. In looking over the realm stats for the US servers I found one aspect of the Alliance/Horde balance somewhat puzzling. It seems that on PvP servers (which includes the few RP-PvP servers) the Alliance/Horde faction balance is fairly reasonable. (Roughly 1.5:1 - Alliance:Horde) However, on PvE servers (including RP servers) the balance is horrid, usually start at 1.5:1 and going as high as 2.5:1 on some servers.

(For those looking for info on these stats - head to this page)

Personally, I've always preferred to play on RP servers. (but not RP-PvP) I don't like PvE servers, (too much OT chat spam) and I'm not a fan of PvP servers either. (I don't want to worry about being ganked any time I walk out of a town) One of the aspects that I did enjoy were the large inter-faction 'town raids', which provided a taste of PvP. Anyway, I digress...

What I have found is that Blizzard doesn't seem to have any inclination to balance the faction populations on PvE servers. I also find it odd that faction balance doesn't seem to be TOO bad on PvP servers. While this can be partially attributed to the fact that a person can't have characters in both factions, I am mildly flummoxed as for why there isn't a greater faction imbalance.

So I put the question to readers, should Blizzard be actively trying to maintain faction balance? While I can see how this may mean that on a given server people would only be able to create (or play) Horde characters, would that not serve the greater good as far as gameplay is concerned?

Any thoughts in general on this topic?

Regards,

Savant

How would you suggest they address the balance? Make the horde more powerful?

Perhaps after watching lord of the rings most players want to play alliance. How would you change that without annoying the majority?

The reason that the balance is much closer on PvP servers is because it's much easier to get into the battlegrounds as Horde, and so those that are interested in PvPing allot are drawn to PvP servers and Horde characters.

The race doesn't always go to the swiftest, nor the battle to the strongest, but that's the way to bet.

The simple way to address it is to simple change the queue from a fixed number per server to a fixed number per FACTION. So if a server can support 2500 people, start queuing people once either faction reaches 1250 + or - 5%. On regular (PvE) servers people will still be able to create a character on the Horde side to enter right away, and that might be all the encouragement they need. For PvP (where you can't do that) I don't think it will be too big an issue since almost all of the servers have good balance. However, there should be a means for people to move to other servers, and they have said they will put that feature in soon.

I just think that things would be far better in-game if there was better faction balance.

I've always wanted them to just shut off character creation completely for a faction that is steamrolling the other in population. Unless of course you already have one on that server.

Only time it seemed to make a damn bit of difference is when we were waiting on the Hoarde side to finish up the war effort on Lothar.

Other than that.. I really don't care either way.

And to go back to what the OP said.. you can't have characters on both sides on a PVP server? Why's that?

there is no reason to put in fraction balance. why? because it woult take out alot of freedom from the game, making its less fun.

im not over powered! look it took me 10 minutes to kill that guy

Plus, in reality, those are just numbers. You're never going to get every single player on both side playing at once, in the same area, so really, the numbers are going to be everywhere. On my server, there are definitely more Alliance than Horde, but that doesn't stop Horde from raiding towns and dominating in PVP... ratio is just a number.

The reason is so you don't smack talk the people on the other side... Which is completely rediculous. All you have to do is /ignore.... Instead of having these post like "OMG!! XXXXX is a nub wussy bubble hearther!!"
