Black Desert Online is a unique MMO in many ways. Pearl Abyss’ design team has taken a lot of the traditional MMORPG elements and seemingly turned them on their head to make a game of non-confirmative systems that feels like an experiment in a lot of ways.

Bill--- Seems like you are enjoying this a lot. Do you foresee this being a game you will play after it is reviewed?

Depends, really. I need to see how things progress in the launch version. But, yes. I like the game. :)

Bill are we going to have AA all over again with Housing or is there designated plots? I really don't want to go through the whole land grab thing again...

The big question about this game is will it last. Sure the game looks awesome and has a lot of interesting mechanics, but what is the point of it all when there is no challenge and no end game? Why should I invest all that time and effort into the economic side when there is nothing to use it on? This is another game with a punishing RNG gear upgrade system like Archeage had which almost always leads to cash shop pay to win items that supposedly increase your chance of success. I had high hopes for this initially, but I'm not sure if it will appeal to a wide audience in the west.

Good stuff Bill! I finished my row boat this past Sunday. I decided last night to work on a wagon to learn the trade system. I'm still only level 20.

I love what I understand so far. If anyone ever said they were a crafter, BDO is their dream come true. I need to get to 50 so I can check out the pvp systems, but strangely I'm in no rush. Too much to learn and do right now.

This is a really well written newbie guide I recommend sticky in the forum and for people to bookmark.

There are lot of very sandboxish elements in the game . It is very intriguing.

    Question about the game.

How are you guys playing atm?

Looked at the website and it seems there are a couple of Beta's but not currently. Playing on aisian servers or some other way? really interested in this game.

The houses are in the open world, and multiple people can "own" a house. When you enter, it's phased to you. Ergo, no worry about land grab.

Tried the game in beta and it looks like GW with a twist but under the hub it is just another cheezy MMORPG coming from Asia..... pass !

    Thank you for the article.

I'm having some difficulty conceptualizing the system, but I feel as though this will be cleared up once I actually start to use and spend time with the system. It sounds complex which is great!

    I'm looking forward to this.

I like what I am hearing about this game . I know there are meant to be some grindy elements to the questing but I don't mind that at all in fact sometimes I like it because I will also half watch shows on netflix at the same time or chat to friends on ts .

Loved CBT1. Cant get enough. Highly recommend it if you enjoy crafting! The grind aint bad at all. The PvP has enough stuff to keep griefers at bay, but enough to also make sure you are able to PvP.

The changes they doing the energy system really limits the crafting and i really hate it. Here is a breakdown on the limits put in place based on single point actions.

Energy regens every 3 mins = 20times in a hour

    Normal 1 per 3min x20 = 20 per hour / 480 per 24 hours

    Bed 3 per 3min x20 = 60 per hour / 1440 per 24 hours

    Cash Shop Bed 5 per 3min x 20 = 100 per hour / 2400 per 24 hours

EVERY SINGLE minute you spend playing the game and outside your bed, you are limiting the amount of actions you can do.

End game: is  Guild vs Guild battles for the Nodes ( that are described in the article ) and 2 Castle and 2 Territory.Challenge: - is getting your gear maxed out, since at the end each gear upgrade has a chance to degrade your gear. ( So upgrading +16 Armor can take you back to +15 instead of +17 ).
Pearl Abyss is constantly adding a lot of content to the game - New World Bosses, New Open World Dungeons, New Combat Weapons for each class, New Zones.I can tell you, you won't be bored in this game, especially during Eu/NA launch, as they will try to catch up to Korean version, which already had 2 Land expansions increasing the total size of the Game World 3x time.
The only question remains unanswered, whether Daum EU will make the same mistake as Trion, and turn this game in to P2W. Currenly RUSSIAN Region is working on releasing a Worlds first None P2W Server for Black Desert Online in february this year. So it is possible to have Black Desert with out P2W.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The game is already dead in Korea, there is no real end game for PVE only PVP (and even to this day pvp is broken), regarding the regrade/upgrade mechanism is totally broken and an eternal grind (thinking in the west will be P2W most likely like AA regrade system, not to mention pvp will require you to have real enchants or you'll be the dead meat of the group ALWAYS), this game is enjoyable until mid game after it becomes repetitive and boring (although combat is quite fun but gets old at the end). Pearl Abyss is not adding nearly enough content as they promised, they never added a single instance on the first they promised but yet have to deliver.

LOL..I'll be using your "evaluation" to definitely decide whether to try it or not. Why not get off your ass and actually play the game and offer up a mature, thoughtful pre-review? You contributed nothing by commenting...

From what I've seen in my week and a half is that you really don't need to quest unless you intend to craft. If you intend to craft you'll need contribution points which as bill said comes from questing.

From what I gather, if you are the level cap dungeon/raid guy BDO wont be the game for you. If you are a crafting, economy, territory control, guild oriented type you'll be in for a real treat.

Agree with almost all of this. The cash shop PTW portion I don't see happening. Unlike most games in Korea, the cash shop in the KR BDO has zero PTW elements, which is incredibly unusual for KR games. I don't see why they would add PTW items here, when they have none in the PTW capitol of the world.

If you want to know if the game will last. Take an in depth look at the population in the KR version now compared to at launch. (granted I don't have these kind of metrics on hand, but they may be available) If you take Archeage as an example from your post, within 4 months of KR's AA launch the pop had dropped drastically, the game had a lot of issues, and people were leaving for a myrid of reasons.

I honestly don't have a clue what is going on in the KR version of the game population wise, but this is a good indicator of other factors for the long run.

The game when you get down to it has no content.  What are you going to do at 50 pvp?  That gets old fast.  They will be consolidating servers before summers end.  Just being pretty is not enough today.

Great article, I really loved how this game made sandbox style interesting for me, I'm just sad I can't play it without the need of using a VPN, which is not a sure way to enjoy it.

BDO have no sandbox elements in it. It is extremely refined theme park (medieval with a pinch of asian style) they have a very good array of sub-systems that are very well connected and self-sufficient but beside exploration(caves/coves etc.) even the crafting nodes in towns are really strictly defined and going of the beaten track will just harm your experience than reward it. It is still an amazing game but not sure who fooled you with the "sandbox" element. ;)

Also he forgot to mention the most important part of contribution that it gets carried over trough your family (alts ) so your 1st character will have it the hardest but any consecutive characters u make will have it much easier as contribution is probably the 2nd most important factor after level/gear enchantment as to determine your strength. Just a big sword is not enough for a fine warrior you need DEEP pockets too. MUahahahah
