Gone for two years....

I have been "away" from gaming for two years and came back a few weeks ago.  I was looking forward to coming home and seeing all the excellent "new and upcoming" MMO's for quite sometime.  I was looking forward to Wildstar and ESO. Played WS and am confused at the F2P,  I still have yet to play ESO.  I have noticed quite an overabundance of games to choose from.  It seems there are a a ton more FTP's out there and not so many "core" games anymore.  Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm finding it difficult to find a game to play and stick with it.

I come from the days of DAoC, SwG, Vanilla, etc. etc. etc. I was really hoping to find something, anything, to become "involved" with again.  I know before I left I was struggling to find something to keep my attention and always looking forward to the next up and coming.  Now, however, I'm not sure where to go.

Being a more old schooler gamer I'm having a hard time trying to find my niche, for there seems to be so many niche's to choose from.  Where do I even begin?  I'm tired of DL'ing a game, installing, spending a week, unistalling, repeat.  By no means am I burned out on the genre.  Any advice?

Thanks all

I was thinking about The Secret World.  It's been quite a few years now.  How is the community?  Population still there?  Worth starting even at this point?  I'm more of a PVE style player than PVP.  Thanks for the input Amathe.

I have not played it in a while, but the community was nice. The population, from what I have heard, is fairly steady. What makes it worthwhile are the cool stories and puzzles, plus the spooky atmosphere. I think it would still be worthwhile.

I liked TSW, but what spoilt it for me was the dimwits putting spoilers in general chat.  It really spoilt the fun of forthcoming puzzles when someone gave away the entire solution!  I stopped playing because of it.

I've following this site for 12 yrs.

This site is slowly turning away from what it used to be and giving in to the highest bidders with the most idiotic games...SADLY.
I won't be surprised if this site changes into a language we don't understand. :(

"My Fantasy is having two men at once...

    One Cooking and One Cleaning!"

    ---------------------------

"A good man can make you feel sexy,

strong and able to take on the whole world...

    oh sorry...that's wine...wine does that..."

Population is decent and the community is friendly and helpful (except those few who are in every game). Game is PvE, it has a couple pvp options but all are within instances, tucked away nicely in the corner

"Worth starting even at this point?"  sure, right now there's the golden week with huge golems. But if you mean the endgame and falling behind and stuff from other games, answer is still a Sure.
It has no levels, missions are all around the world, so you can meet players in every area. And catching up isn't hard either, if you're a rusher you can reach QL10 fairly quickly - even though I'd say take your time, there's no mandatory sub, and even the base game has lots of content. After that you can start playing the content updates called Issues (if you jump in with the Ultimate edition, that contains most of them).
And for the game itself, check this HL vid from a few months before https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrbpRnZgsls it has a short summary in the beginning

I have not tried it yet, but if you are willing to play a free alpha, I also hear good things about this game: ninelives.smokymonkeys.com.

Elder Scrolls Online, after all its improvements over the past year, would probably serve you well.  It has a really great PvE DLC that dropped not too long ago.

Project Gorgon has a very old-school feel (including the graphics!).  It's PvE, but it isn't complete yet.  It's being worked on by a few dedicated folks, so development is on a slow timeline, but they've got some really cool, unique ideas you might enjoy.  Heard the community was helpful too.
