It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!
It's the stinking Overview Scanner!
(please note that I am still a total noob. There might be an easier way to do everything I complain about below. If there is, please feel free to call me a total noob but also, please, tell me what the easier way to accomplish my goal is)
Im digging the game but so far space combat has all the excitement of working as an air traffic controller.
It seems to me that you could remove the graphical aspect of the game entirely, the space background, your ship, enemy ships, the flashy laser beams, all of it. And game play would not change one little bit.
The whole time my eyes are focused on my Shield/Armor/Hull Gauge and the little flashing lights on the Overview. Thats it.
Everything else can pretty much just go away.
Having to right click with your mouse and drag down for actions is a total pain. Trying to select a line and then choose a button in the top part of the overview is not much better. The lines are quite thin, and I often find myself locked onto a cargo container or some such nonsense.
Why cant there be a keyboard bind for target selected item? i.e. I select the ship I want to shoot, press x and the ship is targeted. In my mind that would be a hell of a lot easier than having to click twice with the mouse or trying to select an option on a drop down menu.

CTRL + Left click is your friend
Ok, What does that do?
I don't see anythign about it in the player guide.
Instant targeting.
Hold down CTRL and left-click on the object you want to target. You'll skip the menu selection.
There are a lot of hidden shortcuts that are not documented in the player guide. The best thing you should do is post on the Eve-O forums asking about possible shortcuts.
Don't forget you can directly click on an object in space and use the right-mouse button to bring up an action menu. In fact that how the majority of players interface with the game.
Early on in the game you can definately close to replace GUI with overview, sepecially for low lvl agent missions and such. However as you progress positioning become extreemly important and you will have to properly position your ship to survive. Also for PvP fleet battles, you have to keep your ship alligned to celestial objects to be able to warp on moments notice.
My point is while overview is extreemly useful it will always be only a tool.
double post
the overview is your friend...
First you should learn to setup your overview correctly, meening it should show important informations like velocity type name transvertical velocity etc. remember its your friend.... next restrict it to only show what you need and then save it as a setup.. repeat after me the overview is your friend... ie if your mining it should show roids - cans - rats if your agent running it should just show rats in pvp it should only show targets hostile to your corp.. guess what the overview is.. ok you got it now i guess...
eve is not a twist and shoot game its much more than that, its about setting up your ship, learning what the 300+ items do and when to use them, and more than in most games Working together with others to achieve large goals...
