League of Legends: $1.6 billion dollars Dungeon Fighter online $1.052 billion dollars World of Warcraft (you know that "ailing" title) $814 million dollars Lineage 1 $339 million dollars Maplestory $253 million dollars Clash of Clans $1.345 billion dollars Candy Crush Saga $682 Million dolars DOTA 2 $238 million dollars
No other MMORPG on the list

Let's look at "that ailing title WoW" for example. Using numbers from Activision's published results: Q1 $272M + Q2 $221M + Q3 $195M or $688M. So IF this data is accurate Q4 is $126M. So an average for the quarter of under 3M subs? And knowing it started at 5.5M that means it must have finished lower. So ailing indeed if the numbers are accurate.
And Destiny only $291M? Yet it sold over 10M copies in the first 9 months of the year.
The big story however would be:
We know how much money L1 made - based on NCSoft's published results - (Q1: 66,024, Q2: 85,479, Q3: 78,211 KRW in MN or 229.7). Now I haven't bothered checking back on the exchange rates but Superdata's numbers suggest that L1 made c. $149M in Q4 (using current x-rates).
HEADLINE: L1 passes WoW in quarterly revenue. True? Depends how good Superdata's numbers are. Not unbelievable. Take the numbers at face value though .......
They keep hiring Narrative folks, and that usually means they're working on a story driven game, which LoL is not. So I wonder if they're making an RPG or MMO of some sort. Time will tell.
League gameplay is not storydriven but the background and lores are nothing but storydriven. Have you seen all the special website they made for events? I am not surprised all these narratives go into production with those, instead of really trying to make an RPG or MMO.
In short, why would you risk into an unknowing mud when you're getting plenty of fish in the clear water?

This 100x times over. As usual Murphy is off point. You however have nailed it directly. I originally read his comment this morning, and thought to myself, this clown has obviously never really vested any significant amount of time in to LoL ... otherwise he'd know why all those narrative-like job apps were up.

No need to get your panties in a twist, boys. I'm simply saying that it's well known that Riot is working on a new game, and I highly doubt they need multiple narrative designers for a MOBA. Think what you will, but RIOT isn't planning on just doing League of Legends as their only stream of income for the next decade. They want to diversify, and while it may be "League" flavored in terms or lore or background, the people they're hiring are not only working on LoL.
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

I'd play either one. I don't play all that much LoL itself, but I do love the setting and characters they've created.

Might want to take a few seconds and think about who actually owns Riot before making embarrassing statements like this.
No offense to the people who think that since LoL is making good, Riot wouldn't bother with other projects, but guys seriously...? You can't expect a multibillion dollar company to not invest in other projects. That's suicide. Just because the game is doing good now it doesn't mean it will for the next 20 years and those companies don't work with the mindset "let's have few good years and then retire", but with "let's make even more billions".
Ask any investor. Having all those money and not investing in new projects would be the worst "investment" they can do.
Riot is a trusted company due to LoL and as long as they develope a "decent" game they will make a huge profit. However I believe that if they do develope a game it would be more then decent, because LoL has proven that they deliver quality.
Now what genre the game would be is hard to tell, but nowadays games like LoL, Hearthstone, Crossfire and the somewhat new Overwatch/Paladins(not counting the original TF2) make more money than most MMORPGs, so my bet would be on one of those genres, though if I had to choose I'd prefer if they make a game similar to Path of Exile/Diablo 3(ARPG).
They keep hiring Narrative folks, and that usually means they're working on a story driven game, which LoL is not. So I wonder if they're making an RPG or MMO of some sort. Time will tell.

I'm well aware of 'who actually owns Riot'. If you knew anything about Tencent, you'd know they don't have anything except Moonlight Blade as a potential western release title, where they would use RIOT as the publisher. At that point there is only some translation pieces that need to be done and wouldnt fit the role of 'narrative' job roles as recently put out by RIOT. Tencent would not put out a 2nd MMO to compete with Moonlight Blade.
perhaps /you/ should think about things for a second before making embarrassing comments. I rarely post here, but I'm more than well aware of whats going on the the gaming market.
In just the last 2 months Riot has doubled down on League aiming even more to push it up that e-sports ladder and they're in the midst of doing a huge client overhaul and update which is essentially a rebuild of the game. There are so many articles about these things and Tencents involvement, in these few months.. if people actually believe they're hiring for a new MMO .. they're delusional.

I see. You just refuse to actually look at the facts... the facts that virtually lay out Riot AND Tencents roadmap for the next 2 years for all intent and purposes.... and you're going to just ignore it and clamor some silly 'is that your position' nonsense.
Also, at what point did I say they would never diversify? I never did. I pointed out simple facts that you could have known and saved yourself embarrassment. I said those narrative positions that were recently filled were not for some new MMO. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure these things out. Feel free to do your own research on both companies if you want to save yourself future embarrassment, as you put it.

You refuse to understand that according to the tweets the Riot R&D team is NOT working on LoL or features of it. They are working on an entirely different project.

I see where you're coming from now. The confusion is from:
Holy crap at the difference between the number 1 and 2 watched ESports - LoL and DOTA2. I knew how much DOTA2 brought in (and that CSGO came in just underneath it), and thought that sounded great. I did not realize the gap was this large.

The fishing analogy in the post you quoted and agreed with 100 times over pretty clearly implies that Riot would not diversify.
