Was just reading their FAQ section when I came across their cantina use. Apparently, once you die you need to go to a cantina and rest up. You can speed up the healing process by purchasing food and drink.
Brilliant idea in my opinion. This creates some downtime for social interaction. It can only make the community that much closer.
To be honest, I was at first somewhat scared away from this MMO with all the talk of grouping. However, after reading the FAQ and the ideas for cantinas Im starting to understand their direction.
This looks to be a big hit in my opinion and truly a 3rd gen MMO.

DDO is doing this... I'm not a big fan. It just causes some bottle necks is far as lag.
While the DDO inns seemed to just be a place for idling/spam, the SWG cantinas provided a real sense of realism and community. I'm assuming, due to the lack of instancing in VG, its inns will be more like the latter.
I rather be offline than be doing an activity I doesn't enjoy.
Do I enjoy standing in a chatroom? Not when I have to before I can play.
After the books & the long meditation, the boats, the corpse run, XP loss, this is just another timesink. Honestly, how great an experience did you expect to see in a place crowded with peoples who just died and want to play ASAP but can't, they have to stand there.
They would be better with a X time offline requirement, where you can be at the Inn as well as tradeskilling, but you don't have to be there and don't get any kind of reward for been at the Inn in the sense of adventuring back faster, so nobody is at the Inn because they have to, but they are at the Inn because they want to.
And most importantly...the information has to be CLEAR CRYSTAL. Peoples have to understand what is happening easily, have it been intuitive. Like a clock on the middle of the screen with the title: Adventure Restocking. Or whatever, it has to be clear.
PS: My opinion on this subject has evolve, as I spent more time thinking over it...I am aware I may have encourage such a system in the past and I apologize for not understanding back then.

Almost as if they were FORCING chatting down yer throuat or something. There's a time and a place for everything, chatting is what I wanna do after I die. Going back to where I was and trying again is what I wanna do.

True Vanguard players don't have to worry about such things
Because us True Vanguard players will never die, we are too elite for that. We dont have precious hoarding time to waste on sitting around to rest up. This part of the game is just for you newbies who die alot.

But nayways. Nah i really dont die that much in MMO's because i play with a circle of friends that I can trust to do their jobs =p So I personnally, won't be seeing many of you there, least I hope not.
ALSO what most people forget is this. In a game WHERE YOU LOOSE EXP WHEN YOU DIE, You have to be pretty dumb to DIE, cause they make it Rather hard to die trying. This isnt a WoW Zergfest, this will take stratedgy, just like Everquest pre-PoP, and DDO grouping. I dunno, guess we all will just have to see how it ends up after the beta's.

Why is everyone so down on resting in a cantina ? Are you all so focused on grinding out levels you can't be bothered to sit and chat for a few minutes ?
This reminds me of SWG. A lot of folks complained about the waits at starports and having to get your mind healed by entertainers. Then after the wait time was reduced to nothing (jtl) and mind wounds removed, everyone got nostalgic and talked about how socialization was gone.
Personally, I like the cantina idea very much so.
Just as a VERY simple example:
-Only have 2 hours to play (2:00)
-Takes 20 minutes to hook up with RL friends and get someplace (1:40)
-(though we all know it takes longer)
-Fight for a half hour and I die... bummer (and exp debt) (1:10)
-Rest up in cantina... 10 minutes?? (I dunno the time, just guessing) (1:00)
-15 minutes to get back to my friends since we've moved along a bit? (0:45)
-Fight for another half hour, barely scratch exp debt, die again (0:15)
-Rest up in cantina... another 10 minutes? (0:05)
At this point I've fought for an hour and could either rest up leaving myself with 5 minutes to play or just log out. It'll take me more time than I have left to get back to my friends which is pretty depressing.
Remember, this is just hypothetical. We can all blow holes in the scenario so please hold off the flames. My point is only that being forced to sit and do nothing but "chat" when my friends are off hunting without me really stinks.
I just think forcing people to sit back and hold their breath isn't cool. I mean, even in WoW with Rez Sickness I can at least go do some crafting or travel back to where I was when I died or head anyplace else. I know WoW isn't the BEST game to compare to Vanguard, just throwing out alternatives. I dun like having to wait unless it's for a minute while the casters regain mana ya know? Otherwise... why log in? To wait?

i understand where you are coming from, just remember this will only happen on a total group wipe. if you have a healer rez you I'm willing to bet you don't have to rest at all.
also...you have to take greater care in a game like vanguard so you don't die, if that means killing in a slightly easier dungeon because your group isn't as strong as you like, so be it.
and I'm willing to bet you have some day of the week where you have more than 2 hours to play? maybe the weekend? maybe you can do something with your time that doesn't involve killing in a dungeon or high risk in dying on the days you can only play a couple hours?
but if you do only have 2 hours a day or only like 10 hours or so a week to play vanguard...if it was me i don't think i would play it until i had more spare time on my hands. a game like wow is perfect for a casual gamer with limited time to play, like 10 hours per week or less.....

First off, thanks for the non-flaming replies. I guess I'm too used to the WoW forums.
Secondly, I have been going through the FAQ on Silky's web site little by little and with the further explinations you guys gave I think I can look at Vanguard a little differently. I remember back in my EQ days (played that for about 5 years) I hated corpse runs and all that. I preferred the Druid and Bard for soloability but never minded grouping. The communication in EQ was pretty good for that. Perhaps I'll fall right back into it with Vanguard. Who knows.
Thanks for turning my head around. I'm gonna go read up some more Vanguard info and get re-excited about it!

I would love to see a link as well. I as well have never seen anything related to Cantina use anywhere. Thank you very much Labyrrinth for your hard work and everyone elses at Silky Venom. I have never seen a better fansite for any game. Silky Venom does an amazing job of keeping us fans informed and your FAQ makes it so much easier to find needed information. Thank you again.

I cant find any reference to cantinas now. Its been a while since I read it. It wasnt that long ago that there was a post about it and most seemed supportive of the idea.
All I see now is some info about corpse runs and having to wear a 2nd set of armor so you can fight your way back to your body. Im not too crazy about corpse runs having experienced them with SWG.
I guess things could change though with enough negative input

Actually, any time I see time sink now days it generally refers to anything you have to do from the second you log in until the second you log out that doesn't involve killing something and having phat lewtz dropped into your lap. Forgive me if I don't want a game that is instant combat and nothing but combat. I want a game that reads like a novel and not a comic book (not that I don't like comic books). I want social interaction and character developement and a game that encourages some role playing (mmoRPG). And if I wanted an instant gratifaction and easy game I would play WoW (which I believe was a very well made and polished game which should set the standard for UIs in future games, it just wasn't for me). And I get tired of any game that involves these type of things into their game being slandard by those who don't have the patience to even spell out words like please and thank you when asking for buffs (such as "sow plz thx" in EQ).
