How long will it last?

I though this would be kinda cool to do on some of the older MMO's so here's myfirst...How long do you think DAoC will last? This is a question some poner from the sinking population, but many others think it will last from the great community and wonderful gameplay, what do you think?

    1) How do you come up with a 'sinking population'?  The # of subscribers to DAOC hasn't dropped significantly since it's peak.  It's still well over 200k subscribers and Mythic reps have stated here that the populations are growing right now.

    2) Speculating as to 'how long' a game will survive are relatively inane because technology could render them obsolete or companies could outright cancel them.

That said I suspect the game has at least another 4 years in it, probably more.

Yeah, it's not the easiest thing to speculate on how long a game can hold on to the market.  DAoC has a devout following of veteran members, and it does attract a bit of the crowd that has begun to lose interest in WoW.  That being said, my thought would be that many games, including DAoC, will be effected by the upcoming releases of so-called "third-generation" MMORPGs.  If these games can deliver half of that they claim to offer, the community will probably be heavily effected.  I think that Vanguard particularly poses a problem for DAoC as I have heard a lot of its players saying they are waiting for that game to move on to greener pastures.

Veteran games can hold on to population, but they will eventually begin to die out.  It's just a matter of time.  Personally I think that EQ has held on longer than I expected. image  Best of luck to DAoC, only time will tell...

Well its brother in arms Warhammer Online, may grab alot of the DAoC even more so than

Vanguard in the long run. However with Vanguard slated to be released before Warhammer

    this should be very interesting.

Kinda funny, Variant the company that created EQ are doing Vanguard and Mythic that created DAoC,

once again going agaist each other like golden days of mmorpg.

EQ vs DAoC (wow, there is something I havent seen for a while) new = Vanguard vs Warhammer.

But hate to say, I was a HUGE original EQ player in the days and not a DAoC fan.

Most of the original DAOC players fled EQ. DAOC is marketed towards a different audience than Vanguard. Hence, if Vanguard is any success, it certainly won't be at DAOC expense.

I expect Warhammer is gut DAOC playerbase. I expet a combo subscription. This will keep DAOC subscriber numbers up, although the amount of players actively playing will most likely take a hit. Mark has already said that he is designing Warhmmer to be the best RvR game on the market. Many of the suggestions over the years for DAOC are being added to Warhammer.

I am not saying the DAOC will close. But I do expect the servers to be barren. I think there will be 3-4 clusters. 1 classic, 1 RP, and 1-2 normal. In fact at that point they might finally merge the servers and just have seperate housing.

i think it will last until about 2010 ,the combo subscription for both DAOC and WAR is a great idea since i plan o playing them both.

Vanguard poses no threat to DAOC imo. Most people play DAOC for RVR. Vanguard won't have PVP until much later *IF* they implement PVP "alternate ruleset" servers.

You obviously know nothing about the game from the statement you just made.  Go read the faq on the site.  It clearly states that there will be pvp servers and hopefully several varients of pvp servers.  They are just not sure how many they will have at launch.

A combo subscribtion whould be great. As a german player ( where DAoC is hosted by GOA ) i think that this will not happen in EU :(
