Are there any titles out there that you have played a lot and felt the experience was worth it? P2W doesn't matter? In fact, I'd love to see examples of games that are considered P2W yet still fun for the free player. Small to moderate cash shop use is also good too. B2P titles are also fine to mention.
I played a lot of LoL and D&D Neverwinter and enjoyed both.
Stopped for different reasons.. LoL: no natter how hard i tried i sucked. NVW: because of time restrictions since my gaming hours are limited and mostly occupied by SW TOR (as a subber, never as f2p).
PlanetSide 2 Is still going strong. All out war is so much fun. PlanetSide 2 is a true FTP game. By shear size of the game and ever changing battles there is away fun to be had.
Only good game in my experience is one I've paid for properly, "free" just doesn't sit well with me, especially as I feel it's more for game hoppers vs a person who plays long term like myself.

I came about 4 years late to the party but I very recently started playing AION and since you know my ncoins are always rather high (people give me those 25 cards as gifts pretty much ....for every gift not complaining) I can buy myself to a decent gear level at max and not need to farm the 1000's of hours.
BnS is my go to action game atm. I hate the story. Love the combat and the whole faction thing.
Wildstar because in my opinion those that dislike this game ...are totally valid in their complaints but the macho man humor makes me happy. I'm super simple.
Smite for my moba needs.
With exception to Aion end game cash shop need all of these games are legit free.
I have about 1500 + hours in warframe over a couple of years, still play when they release new content. Its one game where if you are buying the gear, you are certainly doing it wrong. Their shop is better used for cosmetics and boosts.
Marvel Heroes is another I have alot of hours in, maybe 600 or so.
Ive spent money in each, but less than I would have putting the same time into a sub mmo, which, granted neither of those are mmos.
No P2W, no necessary cash shop, you pay if you want to support the devs. I spent a decent amount of money on MH and to me was worth the time and money.
I ditched PoE for MH now that it has flawless gamepad support. I wish PoE added it too.
In rough order of hours played: LotRO, EQ2, SWTOR, Marvel Heroes, Neverwinter, Tera, Wildstar. I've spent money in all of them.
I'll give GW2 and ESO and honorable mention because they're B2P, but still sub free or optional.
Fair list, but i found Swtor to be pure misery if i played without subscribing, not matter how much i spend in the cash shop. Thats the only reason i dont touch that game again (and i really like swtor)
F2P is ok by me, because I buy some of the convenience items. But if I had to grind for 12 hours to get a bag, or to be able to put more than an old apple core in my bank, I expect I would not like it.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
Well, all my games switched f2p, b2p or freemium during the years, so it'd be a long list let's just focus on the main ones. LotRO is f2p since 5+ years, and still is fun - though it has its bumps and rough edges (like the over-silencing of the Eu datacenter move, or the lag spikes / disconnects) Same goes for STO and AoC, true, I used to resub for 1-2 months when I'm playing AoC as the main game. But yep, they're fun. TSW is b2p since 3 years, and still fun. Today they revamped the subscription model (http://www.thesecretworld.com/news/new_membership_benefits ), but that doesn't affect the fun factor at all.
edit: Heck, it's not my main game and I skipped several years, but in the last couple months I've played plenty of CO and it's still a cool game, I definitely consider it fun

I never play TOR without a sub. If I play LotRO more than a month straight I sub. In fact if I'm focusing on any game more than a month straight I'll sub if it has that option.
The original question is kind of open ended. F2P means more about the sub requirement and less if it has an up front "box fee" which is why I included ESO and GW2 as honorable mentions. To me B2P is effectively the same as F2P but with a small gate to slow down drive by asshattery. TOR is technically F2P but I just subscribe because of obvious reasons.
True, i just dont trust EA with money and online only games so im not comfortable subscribing to swtor. I do disagree that B2P is the same as F2P because B2P kills the purpose of forcing a bad cash shop on games. F2P doesnt have a choice other than ruin the game in order to survive through whales. Of course some greedy companies will twist the B2P model at some point and make their own mess. And some F2P companies will stay transparent until they cant hold it any longer and explode.
TF2, LOL, Hearthstone, Planetside 2, Heroes of the Storm, World of Tanks (especially after they stopped being P2W), Tribes: Ascend, Path of Exile, and Super Monday Night Combat.
There are several others like Mechwarrior Online and Smite where I didn't quite spend "a lot of time" in them, but still enjoyed them.

I agree with all except "true F2P". I rather purchase the game and have a more enjoyable progression. The game doesnt offer enough to justify subscribing to their all access service, and the amount of grind i have to do as a free player to buy decent permanent gear/certs is attrocious, just like all the asian free to play shooters out there. The last time i played the game was right after the PS4 port launched so i dont know if something changed now. In both PC and PS4 i could just play for a few minutes at a time due to the slow grind.
I am currently subbed to SWTOR. I will probably buy the GW2 Expansion in the near future. But I've tried a few other games too. I was not impressed with WildStar. I couldn't get into BnS. I tried ESO. I like the game, but hate the UI. It drives my crazy that that game requires me to keybind my abilities AND use WASD at the same time. If I could re bind WASD to M1, M2 & M3. ESO would be awesome. But I can't stand it the way it is. In the past, I spend a lot of time in Rappelz. It was a decent experience. It probably has the best pet mechanics I've played in an MMO, but heavy on RNG power ups and cash shop.
To me, free-to-play MMOs are as good as any. They have the same business model as subscription MMOs, which is to dangle carrots in front of your nose and get you to spend money, whether by continuing your subscription or buying virtual goods with real cash. F2P is just more open about it.
I do not like to take my MMOs too seriously. I like fun low-level gameplay, not deep end-game content. I guess I am an alt-oholic. I am a fan of Cryptic's games and of action-RPGs. SOE also did good work.
Perfect world international. It was open world unlike some of these other mmorpgs where you have to walk a straight line (blade and soul). You could also fly in it and it had ground mounts too. It was grindy but there was alot of times where you teamed up..all in all i miss it but its way too late to go bk now
Rift, back when Trion was still a good company and before the game got ruined.
I still like EQ2 alot and check in now and then, but the game didn't age too well and the cash shop is too much for my taste.
Nowadays it's Wildstar which i love, but even with the things happening these days, it's future is still too uncertain to me to invest too much time or really attach myself to it.
Runes of Magic is fun, and I started playing PW back when it was PW:M. I have ELoA, PoE, B&S and a ton of others installed at the moment. I don't like P2W games, but I rarely reach a level where it matters. These are my dabble games, and I enjoy them as such.
Only good game in my experience is one I've paid for properly, "free" just doesn't sit well with me, especially as I feel it's more for game hoppers vs a person who plays long term like myself.
Me too sadly. I have had fun for 2-3 weeks (tops) in DDO, RoM (maybe one or 2 more) and a few days in some others ones but sadly have the best F2P games I played never gotten close to the worst P2P/B2P. Part of the reason for that might be that I always have researched the P2P/B2P games before putting money in them while I at times have just downloaded F2P games at a whim but it is still a pretty sad experience.
Unless you count GW2 as F2P, it do gives you access to most of the game for free but since I paid for it I can't count it. I see it more as a free trial... I have been playing it since launch.
I played LotRO before and after F2P, though I always subscribed. Game experience lessened after F2P switch, content direction changed so I quit.
I played SW:TOR before and after F2P, though I always subscribed. F2P transition was horrendous. Actual shop was pure nickle-and-dime, aweful value for money. Community got worse. Content dried up. I quit.
I did pick up Wildstar after the F2P transition. This is the first and only game I've played purely for free. From what I saw in game and in the shop, this is the best game in terms of value for money. You can do virtually everything in game without needing to spend a single penny. However, the game itself wasn't very fun, so I only played it for 2 weeks, enough time to try out some group dungeons, 2 different pvp maps, a few pve zones and housing. Having tried all the major features, it became obvious that the game didn't offer what I wanted, so I moved on.
In general, I do try to avoid F2P games. I'm a "core" gamer, so if I find an MMO I like, I'll sink 15-20 hours a week into it. Virtually all F2P games require you to spend a lot of money if you want to get the most out of it as a core gamer, plus the money you spend is often for temporary gains/unlocks. I think the whole F2P business practice is unethical (not that i usually care about ethics) as it is essentially getting those few whales to pay for the mistakes of the game's designers. I'd rather wait for a genuinely good game to come out and then support that, rather than pissing away money on substandard games which encourages designers to keep churning out shit.

TERA was amazing for it's time, although I played the most when it was still sub based.
I enjoyed the heck out of Neverwinter until I hit the endgame and it was clear the only way to really be good was to p2w or exploit.
Currently playing B&S and having a great time.
You can see the common denominator in all these games is having an action combat system. I vastly prefer that to a tab-target system.
