In a new series of articles we plan to showcase here at MMORPG.com, our member MadFrenchie pens his thoughts on MechWarrior Online as it stands now, compared to how it fared at launch. We’re calling the series “The Player’s Perspective”, and hope you like this inaugural column. If you have an idea for another, please let Bill know via PMs on the forums!

I enjoy Mechwarrior. I only play it occasionally, but It's fun to get in my mech and do a bit of damage.

I self identify as a monkey.

First this is my favorite game since more than one month. I played about 300 games...

I always loved "die => go spectate" feature in team deathmatch games.

In MWO one feels the tension. You don't rush into enemies like crazy or just die... and spectate. You always have to consider your armor points as a resource that you trade for the most amount of damage possible.

The immersion is pleasant. First the graphics are good. I love to see the sun shining on the battlemechs on Viridian blog (a sunny map). And the tank gameplay (torso rotation independent from the legs) contributes to it too. When playing I feel like I am battlemech pilot. That's great !

The economic model is good and bad. You have almost everything for free through the grind. Paying doesn't give you any gameplay advantage. However it looks like it is better to play for free or to pay a lot than to pay a little bit. I spent $30 and I don't really know what to do with it... Until now I paid for few mechbays (spots for new mechs) and unlocked a decorative pattern for my Arctic Cheetah. However with that amount I can not buy a mastery pack (various versions of a mech chassis with other goodnesses).

One has also to understand the mastery rules. When you play a given chassis variants (let's say Raven 2x) you earn xp for this mech. You can spend these xp to unlock quirks. However in order to unlock the best quirks you have to repeat this process for 2 other variants of these chassis (let's say raven 4x and raven 3x). It means that for a complete mastery of a given mech you need 3 mechbays.
The free account gives you 4. You can unlock some through CW though.

    Few details:
    - you can unlock some basic colors with C-Bills (free currency)
    - there are week-end challenges often. You can win very interesting stuff if you complete them (battlemech with mechbay, decorative items, etc.)
    - there are sales often / always take advantage of them.

This game is such a good combination of shooting skills + battlefield reading/tactic + customization that I know I will play it for a long time...

Yes, it wasn't something I mentioned in my article, but Piranha runs events very often that provide players with the chance to earn Mech gear, C-Bills, and even MC entire Mechs.  They aren't stingy with the prizes, and that's a good thing.

I didn't go too in-depth with the Mech mastery process, as someone new or coming back to the game can hold off on mastering Mechs until they've become comfortable with their decision to stick with the game or drop it.  The limited Mech bays does make Mastery more difficult for the free player..  Luckily, though, Mech bays are a cheap item in the Store (I think you can get 3 or 4 extra bays for the price of like 7 bucks).  I unlocked a few bays for free during the holiday event.

Glad you're enjoying the game as much as I am, and I wanna thank Bill for allowing me to stretch my writing legs and talk about a game I've been having a good time with!

This game certainly nailed the feeling of stomping around in thousands of tons of metal and shooting other players with guns the size of skyscrapers.  I love playing in matches, but I despise just about every other aspect of the game from the sales model to the poke-my-eyes-out mech bay UI.

Hawken is a MUCH better game.

I found it interesting that you look at it from the standpoint of a MOBA rather than any of the more traditional genres. =)

Beyond that i think you pretty much hit it on the head. And while it might be a ugly bastard, most of the community feel it is OUR ugly bastard. =)

This have been a good conversation

I feel it fits that definition, even without the addition of PvE to it (though maybe the introduction of PvE elements could make for some interesting game mechanics in the CW).  It's certainly multiplayer online, and (especially right now) it takes players and places them in an arena in which they do battle (see what I did there?).  ;)

I've never had a large issue with the UI, personally.  I think it functions well enough.  It may not be the most amazing thing ever, but I feel the UI is one of those things that doesn't make or break an experience, so long as it's not completely atrocious.

@Ozmodan from what I know of Hawken, it's less tactical, more twitch gameplay.  Which most certainly is not a bad thing.  I'm growing old in my gaming years; my twitch skills aren't what they used to be (due mostly to my not having the time to devote).  I feel MWO provides a nice mix for folks like me. :)

HAWKEN is one of the many upstarts from battletech probably. Hell I bet you ten bucks atleast one of the developers played "BATTLETECH" the board game. HAWKEN will always be fantasy type mech combat game, Battletech titles however are closer to real science than any other mecha game/book/anime that I have ever seen. That is why alot of people like the battletech series, and never even bat an eyelash on CoD made gundam. Yes you know it too don't lie and say it isn't.

As somebody that's played this game nonstop since 2012 I can vouch for the accuracy of this article. It was very bare bones back then and to some degree still is. With the steam release looming in 2015, PGI decided it would be best to focus on refining existing elements rather than expand on Community Warfare (Now called Faction Play) causing it to be pushed back even further. This year is supposed to have the dev team focused on CW again so hopefully when 'Phase 3' hits there will be lots more to do in CW. :)

    Not even remotely.

Though to be fair I don't think comparing the two is viable. The similarities in my opinion begin and end with a player piloting a robot/mech. Hawken is a twitch shooter where MWO is a mech simulator.

I also think calling MWO a MOBA is a stretch, but I guess technically correct.

I quit playing MWO due to burnout, but have been tempted to pick it up again now that some of the Unseen mechs are being added, including my favorite Marauder.
