a laptop with an embedded hard drive like 32gb emmc, how do you obtain more space? SD card? or can you add a hardrive.
I bought a dell inspiron 3157 with embedded 32gb emmc. Wanted to know if i could add a hard drive and if not how does one make more space.

thanks

External drives, thumb drives, memory cards, and cloud storage.

There seem to be different versions of this device. Some come with 500GB storage.

I think your 32GB is just a chip soldered to the motherboard, check if your device has room for an HDD or SSD. There might be an empty bay that is filled in other versions.

Otherwise add a HDD through USB. Or you can just use an SD card or USB stick if you want a simple solution.

You can replace the eMMC card with a SSD but you can't have both at the same time. There is no room to have both.  The image on page 32 shows an eMMC card and it's eMMC-I/O board sitting in a dummy drive assembly.

You can also find several tear down videos on Youtube.

If you decide to perform the replacement be very careful with all electric connections in the system. They are fragile. Keep all foils in place also. Their primary purpose is to prevent the system from emanating RFI but it also prevents most external interference.

Dell reserves the right to not honor the warranty while any hardware not purchased from Dell is attached to or used in their systems.
