I'm afraid not Slaymore. I love the combat in ArcheAge, it's simple and easy, I don't use the keyboard at all (I just click on my skill bar to cast my spells).
In BDO I don't think you can click on your skills at all, you have to use the keyboard. If you just had to press 1,2,3... etc to cycle through your skills then perhaps it wouldn't be so bad, but you can't do that either. You have to use keyboard combos.
In other words, you'll be doing stuff like 'Shift + Q + Left Click'. You're fingers are going to have to move and stretch all over the keyboard. It's horrifying and absolutely impossible for me
Sadly, the more I learn about this game, the less I think I'm going to be able to play it.
So for any Old Farts who are trying out the beta, could you please post your opinions about the controls? Cause I'd really love to see some reviews that were written from an older gamer's perspective.
I'll be more than happy to pass on my experiences after the CB2. I hate action combat, so I'm going to just pick 4-5 skills that combo together and just use those. From what I've seen of the skill "tree" you can specialize in a couple of skills and put the rest of your points into improvements for them. You can put some skills on your hotbar from what I understand, so I'm going to see what combos with what and how simple I can make it. Button bloat is one of my pet peeves, and I quit playing consoles when they got more than 4 buttons, so it should be interesting.
Thanks heaps Tsiya, somebody's gotta take one for the team
I'm really looking forward to seeing what you think of the game. As we both seem to share similar opinions about 'Action' combat.
You all were spoilt as kids...... most kids I knew played this videogame:
Hey I played that one too, we were muti-taskers back then, the games were for days we were too bruised to go out and play. Bottle rocket fights in tree houses will do that .
Aye it was a grand mmo, it had pve of a sandbox nature, soft pvp..no permadeath here LOL we even had thieving implemented in that we found old wood, rusted nails and borrowed our dads tools such as:
and
the most fun thieving part was raiding the neighbors huge garden for supplies for late night snacks commando crawl style.
We even had fishing and cooking too!
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
Black Desert feels pretty slow compared to GW2 or Blade & Soul where you can easily use 5 or more skills per second and timing animation cancels is a mandatory part of playing your class effectively. Playing a Wizard was not fast paced at all, as you had pretty long channels and casts for each ability with just a few quick casts that you combo with. I can't comment on the other classes as I didn't play them passed 10, though their early abilities didn't seem especially spastic.
That isn't to say that you don't need respectable reaction times. It's still an action game with dodging as a primary means of survival. You will need to be able to watch for important skills and react to avoid them or you're going to die a lot.
LOL love this thread. This is why i come to these forums. Good people to talk and argue with. Kids from 15 to 70 still loving their games.
Heh... Brenics
We don't argue here

tell that to the mods that used to send us regulars bans almost every day a few years back heh. Luckily a lot of the "assholes" have moved on but there is still a few here just not so many anymore that actually liked to troll.
It's not that bad if you use a programable keyboard or mouse - can macro pretty much all combos to a few buttons.
pretty much what I did in AoC - reduced those complex comobos to single key presses - macro FTW!
Not only do you NEVER mess up on timing, you also keep carpal tunnel at bay - your wrists and fingers will thank you!
Yup, what I though, action combat adds so much depth lol. Its a macro keyboard or carpal tunnel. =-) From what I hear even with fumble fingers the PvE is not hard. People killing 6-10 mobs at a time. So if you have a hard time with combos kill 2-6 mobs at a time.
After playing for a while I find it sort of confusing... I've triggered a few combos I didn't even know I had by accident lol.
I don't think manual dexterity or reflexes will be an issue for me. It's the complexity of the key combos required to execute skills that's hard for me to remember at the moment. For example S + left click does one thing but A or D with the left click does something totally different. It's another learning curve on top of the normal new game with new systems one... and the game and systems are different enough from anything else I've played to make both curves steep. Add some non-standard poorly translated terminology to that (the conversation mini-game for example raises the "amity" level of the NPC you're talking to... fair enough I guess but I think I would call it "influence"... but hey, at least it has a conversation mini-game, simpler but somewhat reminiscent of Vanguard diplomacy.)
So it's ok for old fart reflexes but I'm not so sure about the old fart brain
We'll see how it goes after a couple of days.

More importantly, do the "old farts" actually like the game? Like is it fun? I've been playing on P99 the last couple of weeks waiting on Pantheon.
My only real complaint so far is that the mobs are just way too damn easy. The world is stunning and this isn't a game where you learn all the in and outs in a few hours. There is a lot to learn
There are a lot of keys to use in this game and the combat is pretty fast paced. I was using an orbweaver and found that a traditional keyboard suited me better.
In response to an earlier question, I started playing the Ultima RPGs in my pre-teens, not UO. I'm 42, but I'm working on a collection of infirmities that make me feel a lot older!
Yeah, in the past few months I've been sticking to an EQ progression server. Last couple of weeks, I've been trying to relive my pre-teen years by playing old Ultima games.
Now your making me feel real old
Wow yeah. . I think I was 23 when it launched. Downloading BD beta now but maybe I should pass Nah.

My wizard is level 15 now and I'm finding myself leaning towards not buying it already. IDK... it's a beautiful world with some very deep systems but I'm finding the learning curve mostly annoying.
I normally like different and unique in MMOs and other games.... I guess I have limits.
I'm just glad that thanks to this site I got a free CB2 key and didn't have to pay $50 to check it out.

Here is my rant.
I probably went in already decided because of the way pvp and pve coexist and neither are well though out so I doubt this game will stay active long. Reminds of TR and how it felt when playing it. (dull) but I honestly could not get use to the controls. It seems if you are in one mode and not the other (combat, out of combat or in cursor mode) the UI does different things.
Poor ranger died 3 times because I right clicked to turn the camera while in a crowd of mobs and set off a spell.
The UI has to much going on and no way to disable some method . like point click move, awsd and auto move. The camera doesn't turn with the player. Player is shooting 90 degrees to the mobs even when starting combat facing them.
World looks crowded with mobs. Maybe the beginner area but generally this will be the game world so exploration will be fight the gullet to do exploration.
May give it another shot tomorrow when I am in a better state of mind but tonight it just didn't click.

No need to worry about exploring, I've been doing it for the last 3 hours. You can run through packs of purple mobs and not get a scratch.
There are some real cool area's and really cool looking mobs. The artwork is outstanding. The world is so fucking huge.
Being an asian game, I know there will be things that annoy me.
I think I'll play this one out for a bit. We'll see how it goes.
Wait, you said you were a pre-teen when ultima online was out so you can't be that old? 30 maybe?
Think you misunderstood. I said my son who was 14 at the time, was big in UO in PvP. His nick Trinox was big back then, people hated him and his friends loved him.
61 here.
Ah gotcha! 61! Cool you're still gaming.

Well so far the combat hasn't been a problem for me (probably because mobs are very easy).
My key mappings are not being saved so I have to remap every login - but it not only let's me remap everything (I mouse with my left and use my numpad for WASD etc) it updates the hint stuff on the screen with my new mappings.
Last night it was so crowded that I started a new character and worked on only knowledge - brings back very fond memories of Vanguard Diplomacy.
The only thing driving me nuts right now is toggling in and out of mouse mode - just not used to doing it - hopefully I get into that rhythm soon.
