Which server to play on?

I have picked a server completely at random, actually because I like the way the name sounded. Is there a system by which one can categorize the different servers? Is there a way to look at them based on population? Are there EU servers mixed in with the US servers? I don't want to accidentally end up on a european server. I'm pretty happy with my choice, though the population seems to be lower than I was expecting...
