Will there be enough VR users for this game to actually be an MMO?

    That sounds... interesting?

I'd rather not say anything else without some gameplay as I'm finding it very hard (And would make no sense) to work if they do it 3rd person. On the other hand, if it's in first person, the combat must be fluid and fun for it to work with the VR headset. Say something like the combat in the Wii game Red Steel 2 which is friggen amazing!

    Better wait and see.

I really hope they plan to make it an MMO, and not have you play like a ripoff Kirito and just go through his story.

Looks targeted towards the Japanese market. Who knows?

A game about an anime about a game that microwaves your brain if you die or try to log off early...

"Turn off the Oculus Rift HAL"...

Still interesting news, though. I wonder what IBM is up to.

I think VR for MMO is very cutting edge and risky.

Why? have you ever known an MMO player to not binge play?

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

It's been IBM's secret masterplan for years now to once again dominate the IT world !

They'll develop a VR MMORPG and get all the nerds locked-into the "special" IBM VR headsets, so that their  brain power can quietly be stolen while they play. All that processing power will be harnassed to supplement IBM's ultimate quantum computing array. The codename for the project is "SkyNet" apparently...

About a novel  the anime version was years later.

Yep, that's my thought as well, at first I wondered which indie dev is it, then after Watson "wait, you mean the IBM, the blue one?"
It may even turn out something cool. Too bad I'll skip it... a full, 3D scan, uploaded into the cloud, and using it to model my avatar? Getthef..outthahere

You didnt get far enough in to find out what happened to them as they died. They had serious consequences for death that would effect them if/when they would finally be able to leave.

As for the VRMMO, I am still waiting for the day I can "Jack in" to an MMO. No longer bound to a Keyboard or mouse and instead use my mind for it all.

Between SAO and LH. LH absolutely crushes SAO.

    @Jesteralways
You really should consider watching the whole thing.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

I can understand IBM wanting to dabble with VR and stuff, but how did they end up with SAO? I mean, i liked the anime, and i also liked Log Horizon and .hack, but how does IBM end up with a manga/anime franchise? If you replace IBM with "Samsung" or "Sony" or maybe "Toyota" or so it all makes sense, but IBM?

On the other hand, companies like Microsoft used a personification of their various products, epsecially Windows, before, and the Asian market usually still has lots of potential for western companies, even the likes of IBM.

You would be surprised as to how well 3rd person games are in VR. The first one i tried was Adventure Time on my gear VR and i have to say, It works great. It may not be as immersive as first person things, but it can be done very well.

I have a feeling the first VRMMO will be rough for whever gets it out. its a new way of designing everything and im sure they will likely stumble hard. But for that first group to make a good VRMMORPG built from the group of for it, even if its not amazingly orginal will do incredibly well. People are hungry for a change so even if its more so of just a visual change (in terms of viewing things through VR) i think it will be propped up because of that.

This is how it begins. This is how all the governments of the world will control their citizens! Yay for the future! All my dreams about a future dystopian world, filled with people addicted to "virtual reality" are coming true! :D

I loved the anime until the weird guy started down the rape road at the end of season one. If this isnt coming out until 2020/2021 and the price of VR goes down and gets better, it might be enough to make me jump on board the VR train.

The way I'm reading into it is that this is not being planned as an actual game, but more of a proof of concept for their tech.

This is a lab experiment, not an actual MMO to be released into the market. I understand that they are using full-body movement for the in-game movement controls. So, clearly the MMO genre isn't quite ready for so many technological extremes.

Still, it's another step on the ladder to VR gaming heaven. It sounds like a fun and insightful experiment.

1st paragraph : ok interesting, i guess i was right to restart watching, again at episode 6, seems like gonna be fun.

2nd paragraph : yeah man, me too, all these so called VR machine that tells us to move sticks while wearing a stupid looking head gear is nonsense. I want to plug myself in a vr world and do things with my mind.
