Grim Dawn was originally “kickstarted” before Kickstarter became the boomtown it is now way back in 2012. Now, years later, the Action RPG from Crate Entertainment is finally leaving early access and launching in the wild for all to play and enjoy. Frankly, if you’re a fan of ARPGs, you will not want to miss this one.

If you're an ARPG, this is certainly a must play. I personally prefer it over PoE, which is also an excellent game. Nice write up.

Played it for 2 months a few weeks ago, a few things that really pissed me off :

1- Level 50 toon but still stuck with level 20ish gear since the drops sucks.
2- Mini bosses / bosses that take forever to kill and are able to life leech insta kill you.
3- Just what killed Titan Quest, vitality damage attacks do WAY too much damage.
4- No real point in being Melee what so ever, spell casters / long ranges are pretty OP, switching from melee to spell caster for me became like a God Mode / EZmode, pretty funny actually.

Grim Dawn looks great and all, but has a load of issues that needs fixing, I mean when I'm killing level 50ish mobs and they still drop level 20-30 gear, you've got issues. If you thought D3 / TL2 was a grind, get ready for Grimmy, 'cause you've seen nothing yet.  ;)   The time it'll take you to level 49 to 50 in Grim Dawn, you'll get level 1 to 70 in D3 in less time with some awesome gear that helps you kick some butt! ... unlike Grim Dawn...  ;)

I'd advise you to check it out now, as the most recent build is supposed to have fixed a lot of the drop issues you saw. Can't speak to the melee/caster discrepancy.

Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

I play melee at level 85 and clear the endgame dungeon "Bastion of Chaos" in around 9 minutes, personally there's nothing wrong with melee you just have to work harder than you do as ranged.

I play Melee and since Act II released the Melee has been good. The last change made to it made it even better. Fun game. Love the Darker tone to the game. ARPG done right.

I just started playing about a month ago and I feel very overpowered with a 2hand shaman build. It's pretty much a steamroll build i grabbed from the grim dawn forums. Going to run a few more classes before starting something more challenging.

1- It used to be a pain indeed, but they improved it a lot with the recent changes. Sometimes its hard to find a specific item, but I dont see a lot of low level uniques anymore. Just the usual ARPG pile of junk with the ocasional top item.

2- I really don't have that feeling, honestly. Builds matter A LOT in Grim Dawn, having a bad one can make the game impossible, a good one makes you steamroll, even act bosses. Usually its a good idea to max a single attack skill line first, then work with the rest.

3- Theres all kind of resistances, you just cant ignore defense in this game. Sometimes delivering half the dps but having almost cap resistances is a lot better investment.

4- Well, its like that in most games, ranged classes can kite, makes some bosses trivial, while they are deadly for melee. Just like that move slow-hard hit kind of boss, its a pain for melee. But the move fast(or teleport)-weak hit is the oposite. The forums are crowded with builds for melee that wreck the whole game.

Maybe you could give it another chance, like I did, and check how the game improved. I started a completely new character this year, and I'm having a blast. Devotion system is awesome, can help a lot with defenses/resistances/hp, or if you can get those, really turbo your dps.

Ehh. I have played since early alpha and found it extremely boring throughout. The skills are basic and shallow - the graphics , animations and particle effects are an eyesore.. Just an average at best experience.

Huge step down from Titan Quest IMO ( which they made ).

This is the first ARPG that has stuck with me in a very long time. The art and music are beautiful and the combat has a great "feel" to it. I'm also really enjoying the setting and lore, kind of a 'Post apocalyptic wild, wild Westeros with zombies and Lovecraft-ian bits thrown in' (has nothing to do with GoT, just trying to be clever).
There is one small feature, that the devs go out of their way to point out whose use is not even required, that I have become addicted to. That is the ability to rotate the camera, I ended up binding it to my scroll wheel with a click returning it to default view. As I mentioned before, the art and world design are top notch and this allows me get some great views of it.

spot on. this product is a huge let down and step back from titan quest. it is also a sign of the troubled times of the kickstarter era money grabs.

1)it has a nice dark gritty atmosphere, but the animations are absolutely trash, the character models are horrendously ugly, and then you are hit with the never ending"farmland" tile set extremely boring generic landscape, with the final kick in the balls being the uninspired and shallow beastiary....get ready to slog through never ending generic zombies, humans, and insects.

    2) The game system seem good on first glance, but it is pretty bland with never ending trees of generic abilities (with god awesome animations and effects) that have horrendous balance. Most of the abilities are absolutely useless, and a few are wildly strong, there is no choice or freedom of play just a matter of stumbling across the super strong abilities or slogging through the game with garbage stuff because you didnt path up to the OP ability. the "classes" themselves are generic with no identity at all. and the make your own subclass 36 choice PR listed in this article? hahaha ya right...not sure what you are using to define a class but no i would argue there are 3 classes in this game, mlee ranged and magic user.

    3) Item database is the WORST you have ever seen, game is filled with useless white items, occasional bosses drop what is to be your upgrade....but the design is soo terrible you will get an usable improvement about every ten levels with everything in between being junk. Also extremely uninspired, and ugly art. Yeee haw you got a dagger (look like a tooth pick) you got a sword (looks like a sword a kindergardener drew) and you got a staff (look like a stick of wood you found in your back yard).

This is literally a C grade project typical of the new fade kick starter money grabs which is 90% of what we see lately for releases. Every aspect of production value has been skimped on, cheaped out on etc... concept for the game is great sure...but eh who hasnt had a concept like this for a game in thier own mind lol, the real art to games is the implmentation and this game fails it on soooo many levels it hurts.

you are better off reloading titan quest which was a great game if its been a while it will feel fresh, have better visuals, better gameplay, better design, and better skills and class building that grim dawn. Grim dawn is essentially a poorly done not MMO version of PoE with worse visuals (didnt think that was even possible) worse systems, worse balance, and barren itemization.

    SAVE YOUR MONEY lol.

Not what i expect from a arpg, idk why everyone accepts Blizzard's design as being THE design, reminds me of Wow clones.

VERY linear, non interactive combat is not good gaming for me.What this genre has become is simply one shot SPAM killing, and that is a VERY shallow game design/reason to play.
You really can close your eyes playing these games.
I wish a good developer would come along and create a much better game for this genre,it needs it instead of everyone copying Blizzard all the time.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Sorry to say this people have spoken and yes, wow and D3 are still best of the best in the genre.

Unless you gonna argue some shitty argument like "lol blizzdrones play everything, even shit" at which point i just walk away.

I've been playing this game for a long time, put in around 145 hours into it and honestly I'm pretty shocked by the some of the negativity here.

Sure this game has some flaws (what game doesn't?) but the good far outweighs the bad. Plus it's $25. Some of the garbage we get from game companies lately has been in far worse shape content/quality wise and costs at least twice much.

To each his own I guess... *shrug*

I just can't stick with ARPGs that have no dedicated servers.  I'll check it out if it's on sale for say $10 or so though.

    Sad panda.
The game looks great, but no WASD/Controller = pass. EDIT: the steam page says full controller support. Color me interested.

    Game installs as i type.
I'm totally hyped up on the classes and skill system, i just love these "class builder" games.

Usually i find one or another class that i'm interested in, but with Grim Dawn there are already four i want to play out of the box -add to that the customization and class progression and this game can't be anything but fun!
