I have to be honest I'm pretty disappointed in this guild for releasing such a bible, and really anyone for releasing anything beyond very basic and not very comprehensive guides. Sure you have sites like BDOTome and people like Hakurai, both both of them provide very basic 101 guides, that are missing a lot of detailed and advanced information. So that's ok, because it gets people started but doesn't give them too much. They still have to do most of the work on their own.
One of the fun things about this game is that everybody has to figure out so many detailed systems. And those of us that have spent a long time playing other regions and figuring it out without anybody else's help should be rewarded for that.
I won't be playing BDO for other reasons simply related to a lack of time, but players who put in time to learn games like this deserve the benefit of that knowledge. That's the entire point of making this game hard to figure out, is that the developers want you to dig in and take the time to do it yourself. It takes away a big part of the game when you just tell everybody how to do everything. Even though I'm not playing it still bothers me that people like me spent months playing this game in Korea to ensure we knew what the hell we were doing, and you just have people giving them all the goods.
Personally, I'm happy with the lack of tutorials. I'm so sick of learning how to move with WASD and the devs holding my hand like I've never played a game before. I joined the Reddit community, found the aforementioned "bible" google doc, and I was set. There's a ton of other info also made available by the Reddit community that I found invaluable. All the info is there if you know where to look.
Loooooooooooooooove the fact that there is no hand holding.
I love having to figure stuff out for myself.
The lack of tutorials is what makes me love this game.
I've posted this before. An english speaker with a YT channel who has a ton of really good guides that will get you up to speed:

I'm glad this game doesn't hold your hand. It kind of reminds me of the old days when you didn't have all the resources outside the game. This game might struggle though, since a lot of younger gamers today don't have the attention spans to play games with complicated systems.
Sadly enough, this game is complicated in a very shallow way, they way that confuses you at first and make you believe it's profound but in no time you will find it in short of real content. This is the most prominent feature Korean or Asian MMOs share in common. ArchAge is the latest example.
AT LEAST ITS IN ENGLISH FOR YOU GUYS. damn damn damn. i live in europe, in Lithuania and we are forced to play in russian servers . everything in russian, everybody speaks russian and i dont understand russian.
To be fair to Steve, he's a huge fan of EVE and a longtime player, and our columnist here. If you read this, you'd see he's not saying HE doesn't like games that make you discover. He's saying it will be a barrier to entry for players. Not EVERYONE wants to be lost or confused while playing games. So while yes, I see it as a fun aspect to BDO, this process of learning, I see Steve's point.

Case in point, why Turbine remade the Old Forest in Lotro. The first iteration was incredible. Now? It's just an easy set of corridors with what looks like tree painted walls.
In any case, he's right, there are people who don't like being lost or confused. They don't enjoy that "oh dear! I have no idea where I am and I'm in a danger zone" feeling.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
The lack of information is also what makes it intriguing. That something is hidden and you have to figure it out is a real trigger mechanism for a lot of players, and adds immensely to the magic of a game.. an oldschool thing that has been lost in current story driven themepark where everything is served on your platter, including all information.
I am not that excited for BDO in general, but this lack of information and unknowns is one thing that draws on me.

BDO does well enough to introduce you to mechanics but doesn't give you a ton of information... basic they show you the mechanic... then leave it at that.... if you want to learn more.. you need to figure it out or research it...
Yeah, I have experienced something similar. Some quests were really only required you to do certain small things but because the info were not clear enough, I often found myself running across the whole freaking world for hours only to learn later that the objectives were just right where the quests provided.
I'm loving the fact that I have to figure out the game. Like how the trading system works with no rails. Played on Korean servers didn't even have English add on till later and it wasn't even that great. Try figuring stuff out in a language u don't know. Call me crazy but figuring stuff out is fun to me.
BDO seems to be very much a throw-back to older school MMO days. It has a lot of systems that you just don't see anymore. Add on top of that, the fact that it doesn't hand hold what so ever, and I could indeed see some players getting frustrated with it.
Most of the games over the last 10 years have trained people to expect to have everything handed to them, explained in great detail, and be lead around by the nose and have every little system pointed out. This is to the detriment of our genre, as great games like TSW get dismissed out of hand. All due to the fact that quests and systems are not inherently brain dead.
Dev's need to start standing up, and just saying... maybe this game isn't for you then, instead of trying to pander to the lowest common denominator in every situation. When content & systems get dummed down to make the entry easier, there are some of us players who liked the old way, and get left out in the cold. When this happens, it feels like the other players matter more than I do in the Dev's eyes.

I miss the old forest as well... that and Kithkor forest in EQ1.... just that element of danger, getting lost, and creepy factor...
Steven seriously, go play Neverwinter or something.. Its a breath of fresh when an MMO demands you go do some research, and actually have things to learn about a game.. The 1 thing that REALLY turned me on about this game is I was 95% away from deleting this game because I just didn't get where it was coming from.. CBT2 and vodka however was the fault... I played 100% sober on the Sunday and OMFG it was like a religious experience.. If you actually find learning a chore, I'm surprised you didn't end up a druggy selling his arse... You obviously learned Journo so I have to put your writeup down to being spoonfed in games..
BDO had done for MMO's what Secret World did for questing.. It added depth and the need to get online and research some stuff... Effort on the players part is essential in both games..
Sunday cannot come soon enough..... I still have weeping wounds from AA that need stitching up !
I like the complex and not spelt out for you nature .. having to work out for yourself or ask others how to do things is great, builds a community. So many games have gone down the road of making it easy for everyone.
I kinda gave up on BDO this is worst Korean game you could imagine
To be honest I dont like these Anime Power Rangers transformations or mechanical steam punk in a medieval environment ...but its common thing for asian products

It is very well done.
OP is totally correct. Not hand-holding is one thing, being intentionally obtuse about EVERYthing and unclear is a failure though not a feature.
