Alright... D&D Online.... By now, I have figured out that it is not for the solo player. So this aspect aside, what is the rest of the experience like? I have enjoyed BG, BG2, Icewind Dale, and NWN. Is the experience comparable to these?
"Seize the moment and seize the day. Relish the joy, and fight all the harder against despair." - Drizzt Do'Urden
Well all of them except NWN. It completely screwed up the great system they had in all of their Black Isle games by giving you one worthless henchman instead of a whole party making the single player experience utterly worthless.
Honestly though I'm still on the bubble with DDO. I like the idea of going through instances with a party as long as good people are easy to find, it has slightly twitchier combat than most MMOs, and I hear the community is pretty good.
When people will pay others to play a game for them it might be a sign the game isn't all that fun.
Well.... i dont think u can really compare DDO to these games - (except NWN). DDO is more H&S type of game (very well made - to my opnion) - u got quests in DDO - but just like all the quests in MMO - its usually to get from point A to point B - or get something from somewhere...
The game is really nice - the community is great (the best i have ever seen in a MMO). but, the game just dont give u enough things to do once u hit the cap lvl (which is really easy to do so...) - I played in Beta and once my cleric made it tolvl 10 - the game just got really boring for me (and for my friends who also were lvl 10) - thats the main reason why i woulnt P2P this game (and the lack of PvP).
If u looking for a game ot give u the same gaming experiance u got from Baulder's Gate/NWN/Etc. - im not sure MMORPG is the answer - and DDO is defintly not the answer (maybe sometime down the line it would be - since it has great potential)
They just raped the D&D name, not a new thing, to make a quick buck with a game that shouldn't have a monthly fee. Essentially playing this game would be like playing D&D with the worst DM in the world.
I would assume most of the naysayers haven't played the game at all ... I have no familiarity whatsoever with D&D and I'm enjoying the game so far (just started yestarday mind you)... Probably wouldn't have even picked it up if there was ANYTHING else to play these days, but enjoying it so far.
Only has one city and there is no world whatso ever, you can't get any NPC henchmen, there is no PvP, and no storyline not even a basic one.
Yeah I tried it and I can't tell you how disappointed I am Thats what I get for putting any stock in anything Turbine does. These guys just need to stop making MMORPG's.
(edit - yes, I knew most of that going in however, I didn't expect it to be that small scale. Literally the only place to go is the "tavern" where you pick up a mission. Thats it.)
(I didn't care for the art very much either. I like playing Dwarves but the DDO Dwarf looks more like a short fat guy then a fantasy Dwarf. I also didn't like the interface, it felt cluttered. IMHO)
The scope of this game is so limited you may as well play a console game. All that time and hype over this game and all it is, is a stripped down version of GW with a monthly fee.

I Europe Beta tested this game and there are several reason why I won't be buying this MMO. It's not because there's only one city because I'm sure that future expansions ( if they can afford it) will take care of that. It's not because there's no player housing ( although SWG Refugees will be hard pressed to let that slide). It's not because the graphics look abit outdated.
It's because the UI is shot to hell. When you go into melee combat you're spending 3/4 of the time trying to track down your target because its jumping in every direction and if you're not breathing down its neck you don't score a hit. It's because the quests are 90% Fed-Ex which makes you feel kinda stupid in the long run. It's because there's absolutely no feeling of freedom in the sense that you can go everywhere anytime and when you want. Do the quests or....do the quests. The dungeons being completely instanced is a matter of taste, personally I'd prefer a mix, but that's just me. This is not D&D as I know it, it's a straightjacket.
Its always hard to tell from the forums because I for one think only a small percentage of players actually post and 99% of those only post to complain. However thats about exactly whats happening on the offcial forums... its not pretty.
Im still looking forward to getting my copy this week if for no other reason than its the first new MMO Ive played since WoW (thats not a beta) so thats gotta count for something.

Haukun,
IGNORE these a$$hats, enough is enough.
DDO was NOT about;
Exploring a huge persistant, living environment with a strong player run economy.
PvP or gank squads or massive realm V realm battles.
Children and the terminaly unemployed/unemployable to spend 16 hours a day 7 days a week playing.
DDO is about;
D&D.
Forming a PARTY OF PLAYER CHARACTERS to go play in a DUNGEON or other instanced area, completeing the tasks asked of you, any optional tasks and then collecting a reward of somekind.
Now to your question. No I would say it is not very comparable to playing say, BG2 ( but maybe a little, but I've not played BG2 alot but I do own a copy ). If you are expecting DDO to be a conventional MMORPG in terms of crafting, home ownership, dynamic vibrant player run economy, PvP, griefing, ganking, smack talking, gold farming, boss camping, open rolling fields and forests to explore and the 16 hours 7 days that would accompany all that then you will be dissapointed.
I'd read these forums 'full' of 'experts' proclaiming how awful DDO was, how it was GW and "not worth a monthly fee". Utter crap is MY opinion after actualy tyring it. I find it enjoyable and captivating. The graphics, sound and all round presentation is very good. And I guess it suits my lifestyle given that I have a real life, with real obligations and a real business to run.
summary;
Enjoyable, casual with a mature community ( most use voice in teams and for me, no kids yet ). If you still want to try it, DL the client from DDO forums and hassel someone for a buddy key.
DDO is a great game in manyways me as a d&d player its great but it lacks the immersion if they woulda made the world free roaming like eq and wow it woulda been great as heck.Instanced game like gw and ddo i consider them mmorpgs still but alot lazy arse devs who didnt want to take the time and use their imaginations to make it huge and immersive.Still a ok game if you have a group of friends to play with but to sit around for 3 hours straight lfg's and too find out the /tells and chats are bugged and dont work for alot of the players me for one i just deleted the damn game do to unresponsive custermor service.
DDO is a solid game (I played beta), ran very smooth on my system (although a few had problems *shrug*) however I just didn't feel the D&D vibe. And for the love of all things holy, stop comparing it to Guild Wars!
DDO is a nice ACTION game. I will not play it because it is not D&D, action...not for me. But it is a nice game.
Of all the other TSR product you name, think of Baldur's Gate on the Xbox and make it more ACTION and multiplayers, that is what you get. It share little in comon with any D&D PC game beside a skin.
PS: DDO has it own forum btw.

That would be hypocrit from Turbines. The whole team, the whole management see the game been made at every step in the process. The StromTrooper (as I like to name him) made a pretty good job.
I would not play that game myself, because it is a follow up on the Xbox version of BG, but punching the StormTrooper is not going to improve your product, it is a Blizzard way of thinking...and Blizzard lead to GW. GW lead to PvP, PvP lead to evil.
In facts, the StormTrooper may be completely not responsible for the ACTION feeling of the game. If you must fire someone, it would prolly be the lead artist or the lead programmer and this is something I would not recommend either.
But that is just my tiny opinion.
EDIT: Of course, if they fire him because the game status is final and they don't need any more design, this is a completely different topic, which have everything to do with to release or not future expansion and what to add to the game...they may have no more needs of a designer if they can't justify expansions. Changing the game in a way SoE did for SWG would not be wise, they would lose whatever players they got with this release and they are unlikely to convince other players to come, they see the initial release...anyway...

Wow, not sure who your DM was Nikoliath, but it sure must suck to play D&D when it goes like this ...
"You're in this tavern, and a guy comes up to you. See there are some kobolds in the sewers and he'd really appreciate you killing them."
"You don't really need to worry about tactics or startegy, just zerg everything that moves. A healer is a plus, but not really needed."
"When you get back I'll give you some gold."
Next night ....
"When can we leave town?"
"Well, you'll eventually leave, but not for quite some time, after all there are too many kobolds that need your attention."
D&D IS about a huge explorable world where an adventurer can CHOOSE to wander alone for a bit OR gather some like minded people to complete a task. It is NOT about one town that only has wharehouses and sewers to explore.
D&D IS about the freedom to smack around the chaotic evil group member. Do alignments really mean anything in DDO?
And why they chose Ebberon for the setting I'll never understand. Bad idea.
If it was free like GW, then yeah, I'd give it some time. As a pay to play MMO, not worth it.
Originally posted by Infliction I would assume most of the naysayers haven't played the game at all ... Unfortunatly, that's where you missed out. Not as a flame or bash, but since you never played PnP D&D you have no idea what you're missing. Real D&D is so much bigger and better than anything these tools implemented here.
Second, you've only been playing a day or two. Once you've cleared the sewers of kobolds for the 20th time you'll wish you could leave that rat infested town, but you can't.
Oh, and yes I did play DDO, from alpha on so I'm not just jumping on the "hate DDO" bandwagon.
As someone who is trying to play the game right now I agree with most of the stuff being said here. I played PNP ADD for over 20 years and this game is not great. It is fun at first but I am getting tired of it already and I have been playing less then a week now.
The game is too liniar and confining. You can't just wonder around the world and explore. And for some reason I can't find groups to party with all of the time which means I CANT play the game because there is no way to do the missions solo.
Just my opinion but this game could have been so much better and It's a sad day when I play DDO for 30 minutes and quite to play Fable TLC. (Both which where given to me on the same day, my birthday )

If your idea of real D&D is 1). get quest 2). complete quest 3). return for reward. then I truly pity you. You say that DDO is about D&D. I don't know what games you play, mate, but in my games our DM usually stretches beyond the 3 point programme you stated.
Here's my gripes with DDO... Almost everything could have been done alot better!
Repetitive quests/objectives ( Individual stories/adventures aren't all that good or different )
No main storyline, which would have been perfectly suited to this type of instanced gameplay
Lack of content ( You could literally do atleast 90% to all of the quests in less than 100 hours... This basically has to do with the fact that they released the game early... )
Combat ( Try Mount&Blade, then come back... In DDO, blocking is merely increasing AC for a time duration, u're unable to block any particular incoming hits and fighting is just alot of spamming imo...In other words, DDO's combat is bad and could have been made alot more fun... )
Those are my main gripes about the game... The other dislikes have been stated alot already and are quite obvious, so I'm not going there...
Edit: Btw, if it even just had my point #2 ( Main Storyline ), I would have called it a decent game. Because that's something I think should be expected of a game that's fully instance, following the model of single-player/console style games...
