give em a month to be gods in that world with unlimited everything and essentially unkillable. everyone gets everything they want.. solo that uber hard raid? done! so you can experience the content you may have missed, sport the gear you always wanted, see the things you never saw......
List server maintenance price clearly and allow crowdfunding and private servers. The only excuse not to is if they are developing a direct replacement for the game.
I think they should offer complementary psychologists to help people transition. There's a few people on this website who could probably benefit from sorting out their feelings about SWG.

Pretty much what SWG did. Open everything up. Players going around giving away their valuable stuff, making goodbye videos.

Completely agree. The developer can no longer support it so why not allow someone else to take it over?
IMO when shutting it down,it is like saying they don't care about the game anymore,so should be open season. I would like to see a law whereby developers have embedded client side server processes so that when it does shut down it is an easy move. I bought UT99 17 years ago,i can still do anything i want with the game ,from mods,to running servers anything i want, that is the way all games should be done.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Assuming the server tech / game code isn't being reused by the company for other games (and might thus be a security risk), then they should release the code and tech so that the community can host their own.
Beyond that, some sort of end-of-life event / promotion or whatever. For example, making the game free for the last 3 months for everyone who has ever had an account. Removing all costs from vendors etc. For me personally, I'd love to see some epic pvp events organised.
For example, the Russian hosts of LotRO seem to be able to do a lot more GM-run events than Turbine ever did. A good example was they moved the PvP zone for a weekend (something unheard of), spawned extra bosses that gave pvp rewards, had GM controlled monsters and extra objectives etc. Thats the sort of thing I'd love to see throughout the whole game, not just end of life!
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman
The only thing a company can do that will not make them hated by not only the people still playing a game but people who used to play it is to allow others to run private servers for the game after it closes, sadly very few will do that because it's competition for the companies other titles going forward.
