I'm a 31 year old lifelong gamer. I first got into mmorpgs back in 1999 starting with asheron's call. For the past decade I've noticed a pattern in my mmorpg experience. I play mmorpgs until I get to endgame, then I realize the endgame is just a crappy version of some other non mmorpg game that does it better. I used to tell myself that you can be unique in character development and custom builds if you play mmorpgs, but that too, always ends up getting funneled into preset builds and expectations.
When will we start seeing mmorpgs that are designed for nothing but competition? I want everything I do to be a competition with other players or groups of players without the illusion of leveling or character development as a filler. Am I doomed to play mobas for this experience, or will mmorpgs ever catch up?
When will I see a massive version of moba style gameplay incorporated into an mmorpg setting?
Imagine several factions pushing their own lanes in the form of zones in an endless competition for map domination? I want that.

Oh yes, and no endgame nor end to the game, probably the best virtual world out there.
EVE doesn't have an illusion of complexity, it is the epitome of it. (some will argue perhaps unnecessarily so)
Also, Planetside 1 and 2?

All MMO's are filled with competition. For instance, competing for places in PVE groups is very real competition. The winners are those that have the required (or better) gear/skills combos. But you don't seem to like that kind of competing.
As for complexity, MMO's will rarely be complex, because it severely restricts the potential playerbase. Restricted playerbase means restricted revenue. EVE is about the only complex MMO that ever lasted more than 6 months.
You'd like to explore all contents without barriers (ie. gear, level, etc.) Well that was what sandboxes are (were!) about. You're not looking for anything new, you're looking for something very old.
I'm not sure if I'm right though, as I said. I am a bit confused
Keyword ROLE play, that does not mean competition unless you are suppose to be competing for something but even then when it makes sense players don't like it.Example competing for a Boss ,players are so self absorbed they want it instanced, they want to have it now and they want the drops right now.
We already have mmo's dumbed down to single player games and players want end level in 2 weeks, but then the funny thing happens, they COMPLAIN,meanwhile it was their own doing to speed off to end level.
It says two things, gamer's don't know what the heck they want and when they do they are still confused by what genre they are playing.I am pretty sure most gamer's have a high level of education and ar quite smart yet when comes to gaming....swoosh right over their head.
We do NOT need anymore competition gaming,it is suppose to be a past time for fun,NOT an esport, pretending to be a real sport lmao.I play to have fun, enjoy the games graphics and hopefully enjoy interaction with other players,NO other reason,i do not need pvp or ladders or rankings or sponsors or donations, none of that is suppose to be in gaming.

Can you tell I hate MOBAs?
However if it has to be an "mmorpg" then maybe Crowfall when it launches or the Darkfall relaunch. Camelot Unchained was also suggested although it won;t be 100% competitive. And maybe ESO might work as well - the campaigns specifically.
As Wizardy says those I play mmorpgs to relax - when I want hard I play a different type of game entirely.
Not bashing WoW, but if better and better gear and dominance on battlegrounds is all you're after, then yes, why not play a MOBA? However, if you want to operate in a real economy or take part in battles that change the political landscape of the world, I don't think that MOBAs can offer you that.
...to the poster above me: I don't think twitch gameplay has anything to do with endgame or world design. I've been playing a twitch based MMORPG since 2003 that also has a pretty well defined virtual economy; to me, that is what the endgame is about (not fulfilling achievements, although those are also nice; more of a side-effect to high level gameplay).

Achievement is a very loose term,i would not call level numbers an achievement ,although sure seems to me most think that is what gaming is all about, some level number.End game looting, what is the purpose since your already at end game?Devs can't think of anything so they just add in simple pvp, here go grind end game loot so you can pvp or when we release new content you will need that loot to be able to do it.
Game development has become incredibly shallow, only god knows why it is costing them so much to do so little.Crafting should carry a more realistic design to it.Example you need materials to build a shop to house your wares, then you need to hire npc's to sell your wares from that shop. You might need blueprints skilled tradesmen etc etc.
Then in the world what are the creatures eating ,grass? There should be an ongoing eco system. You wants mounts,we should have to tame them and train them or even breed them.NPC's should not be standing in front of some building like they live on the street or something. It is like every single system and aspect of game design is barely scratching the surface,no way anyone can call these Triple A games.
