It'll probably just be the next expansion. They did announce that D3 would get 3 expansions, and we've only seen one so far.

Despite loving D2 (probably since it was one of my first multiplayer games) I personally find (from my fun factor) that Grim Dawn is a better successor to the Diablo series than anything else. (Unfortunately PoE didn't stick for me, but I might try it again one day.)
Alot of people are hoping for an MMO. The question is, ''is Blizzard willing to develope a game in a genre that is not doing so well?''.
Recent trends from Blizzard lean towards the company taking the ''mainstream approach'' with titles directed towards the ''streaming/esports crowd''. Are they willing to release a title in a genre that is starting to becoming niche again?
Next Xpac is the only real possibility in this case. And why not, they have an hungry audience that would like nothing better than another great addition like RoS. Though I doubt there would be much need for updated gaming mechanics, just pure content since the game is in a great stable state at the moment. I think Xul addition to the Nexus is a foreshadowing for what it to come, my prediction is 4 new classes, with at least one being the Necromancer due to how frighteningly popular this class was in D2. Regardless, Blizzard has plenty to keep me busy with HotS, OW, D3, and SC2 so I am in no rush.
Wake me up near release after an official announcement. One of the worst aspects of Blizzard marketing is how they announce games so very long in advance - and you're lucky if they don't cancel mid-development.
Activision Blizzard are part of the Khronos group as a memeber, if anything I would say there working on the next moble game even after buying out kings.
