But the core moment-to-moment gameplay is pretty dull. Essentially, you'll be using the same primary skills from the beginning of the game until the end.
Most of the meat is in passive skills that boost your active skills - but they don't really change how the combat feels.
As much as people like to hate on Diablo 3 - I think it's miles ahead of Grim Dawn in terms of visceral feel and longevity.
Grim Dawn has a much more elaborate system behind it - but that doesn't make it more fun in the end. Well, unless you enjoy the spreadsheet aspect of the genre more than actual gameplay.
hmmm i enjoyed lots of arpgs , this one is good but far from perfect , classes are different , u can mix 2 classes on u hit 10 , the quest system is similar to any mmorpg , just more confusing w/o indicators at all outside saying a zone and once u are close enough to the quest.
leveled shaman for a while , only was putting points into the lightining and the passive to arc that lighting....1 HOT skill , and stance that gives me a passive shield, put that lightning on my left click........and thats all i do....LMB to win if i need health click heal, a bit boring but is low lvl....or so i tho. But after watching some builds the game looks based around passives more than anything ,
p.d i liked the constellation talents.(similar to Skyrim or ESO ) .
How much usage you get out of active skills really depends on your build. I've got an Occultist with a smattering of Demolisionist (my class is now called 'Pyromancer') and I'm constantly throwing debuffs and AoE's while blasting away with dual pistols (an armor chest piece lets me do that) and/or tossing my main poison bolt type skill, all that while maneuvering (mainly in boss fights).
So yea, fantastic game with lots of action. Love it.
If it had gamepad controls and local co-op like diablo 3 then I would play it.
After playing Victor Vran with a controller not having that feels like a step backwards for any ARPG. The controls and interface in that game have set a new bar for ARPGs for me. If there's no controller support for this game then maybe I'll wait for a better sale.
Luckily for you guys, the game does in fact have native controller support, and it's not awful. It doesn't have the fluidity of moving through menus and the like compared to something like console Diablo, but targeting is simple and responsive. I can't speak for other controllers, but I use a steam controller, the devs have an official configuration for the game, and it feels great.

Thank you for this! I couldn't really put it in words. The feel of TQ's combat was definitely off and for these very reasons. Every creature apart from bosses was very blandly designed too.
It's sad that people don't learn from their mistakes / improve upon their performance.
Only Aurthur Bruno and maybe another dev out of the 10 guys worked on TQ.
These guys made gold out of nothing. I wonder what they could have made with more employees, a budget and a new engine.
this one was definitely worth the wait, imagine if developers actually put out a product as decent as this one after a long long wait, I think people would start being able to trust Early Access and Kick Starting all over again..
I remember when Iron Lore went up in smoke and they formed Crate Entertainment. When they first started talking Grim Dawn, I backed it within minutes. That email is one of the few pieces of cyber-information that has traveled with me from PC to PC from home to home. Best investment I ever made, bar none.
Doesn't anyone find it a little strange that a review from Suzie Ford is also someone who is been waiting on this game to come out. Think of it like a restaurant review. would you find it odd the reviewer sat outside the restaurant being built, waiting to go inside when it was ready to sample to food? based on that assumption alone, I cannot take this review as objective or nonbiased and as simply as just a fanboy review. your thoughts?

I think of it this way: Being a pessimist by nature, I hoped it would be good, but that didn't mean that it would be. In fact, when I started playing, I was much harsher on it because I kept waiting to have that Diablo 3 feeling of disappointment (though that has since changed with the game's overhaul). I honestly went in with no expectations other than that I was going to be let down. That I wasn't came as a very pleasant surprise. The return on my backer dollar was well worth it....and I can't say that about every project, both gaming and otherwise, that I have supported.
Being a fan of a game or a restaurant, to use your example, doesn't invalidate one's opinion on the final result of game play or dinner as being a "fangurl".
SO is this game, an RPG (BG, Divinity OS, Wasteland 2, Fallout etc..) or a loot & mob grinder (ala Diablo, etc)? The former would mean a definitive buy, the latter a definite avoid.

I would say it's much more the latter -- loot & mob grinder -- than the former. It's definitely along the lines of D3 / Titan Quest / Torchlight than the others.

Thanks, sadly I am not a fan of those games.

Thanks for the response, but I still feel that to put forth a review needs to be objective in nature and that the score may or may not be skewed toward a higher score. Maybe someone that liked Action RPG's were told to review a game without any prior knowledge of it. Now that I have just typed that I realized its not possible to not be aware of any game if its your job to provide new game information content to a gaming website. hmmm.....p.s. fangurl/fanboy only a urban coinphrase method of description. and pardon my terrible grammer.
Love the customization depth, something D3 and T3 lacks. They are in the right direction PoE has taken giving more options to players.
No character creator, so much for looking unique. I have yet to try multiplayer.
Gameplay with mouse and keyboard not an issue. Love my Razer Hex.
Respecs are very forgiving compared to a lot of games that pretty much penalize you. Also salvaging to save armor/weapons or Components (there version of Gems).
I do not miss the RNG of PoE of trying to get a 6th socket. What a pain in the ass!

Character system is nice and loot is ok.

Active skills are a LOT more demanding in terms of assets, coding and balancing.
So, while I really like the mechanics in Grim Dawn, I don't think the core gameplay can support the kind of longevity they deserve.
Initially, the game seems fantastic - but after a playthrough or two, I predict most people will start moving on.
Also, I think they went overboard when it comes to resistances and such. There's really no need to have that many different kinds.
I really have no idea why people are falling over themselves to give this 10/10.
To me, it's a 7/10 game.
Not bad at all, but hardly a miracle.
