For an online D&D experience, how does this compare to Neverwinter Nights? Obviously, the graphics appear to be much better here, but I was just wondering how the combat systems matched up.
Well, there are a few fundemental differences. In DDO there are no AOO (like in NWN), instead you get - to hit while moving or rooted in some cases. Some of the feats are implemented differently (but most work fine). I think DDO combat is a bit faster paced than NWN.
All characters in DDO start with +20 hp (the mobs get more hp, too). The mobs in DDO don't go by the standard DnD ruleset (they have unlimited spells and some have spells at a level/CR that they shouldn't have).
I think NWN did better a implementation with TWF and archery than DDO (although, kiting in NWN was too easy and its not as easy in DDO). There are also an overabundance of magical gear (and don't tell me that its because is a high magic setting, the proper term is wide magic as in breadth not depth).
IMO, the combat in DDO is still as fun as any of the other MMOs on the market - even more fun than some. But I would look into more aspects of DDO than just combat, unless you are just looking to hack and slash a while.
