Best Bard in an MMO

Actually they were OP for awhile but then got a major nerf...i used to watch them kite an entire zone and kill many mobs at a time with their DOT songs......It used to be very dangerous because a bard would come along with 20-30 mobs trailing and if he got too close theyd aggro you.

For me it's FFXI's version of Bard since it was my main. However, I was never allowed to go to any events as any other job which was annoying. It was also extremely boring to play outside of merit point PT's.

Not a Bard in the strictest sense but SWG's Combat Entertainer was the most enjoyable Bard I had ever played the most in any MMO.

How I view the Bard class in any game:

    Everquest1's bard
In the 1st few months of release, EQ bards have no speed cap. With Selo's drum of the March (dragon loot), your speed will be so fast that if you run past another player, he might even not be able to see your name.

Also during first few months of release, bards were able to charm Gods and Dragons (for a couple of seconds) due to their charm song having no level cap.

And of course kiting ALL the mobs in the zone is fun (anti fun for other players in the zone though).

And all everquest players will remember Fansy the infamous bard, training sand giants and creating havoc all over the Oasis of Marr.

For those who never played EQ1, these are what the bard can do.

    Wears plate armour
    Dual Wield weapons
    Mesmerise
    stun
    fear
slow (both movement and attack speed)
    Group Heal
    Group Mana regen
Group movement speed buff + tons of other buffs)
    Levitate
    Invisibility
    Charm mobs
Teleport mobs back to their spawn spot (unique ability not seen in any other MMO)
    DD
DOTs and AEDOTs (allowing them to AE kite unlimited among of mobs, including tagging all mobs in the whole zone and soloing them at the same time)

So Bard's, in my opinion, are an underused class in the genre. Even if we do get one rarely do two Bard's from two different games play the same.
I like the music classes and have a couple of favorites.

    DDO -Bard
    DAoC- Skald
    Vanguard -Bard
    LoTRO- Minstrel
    EQ2 -Dirge

(Disclaimer* I played AC and Lineage instead of EQ1 and never played FFXI both of which are supposed to have wonderful Bard classes)

What do you think are some of the best Bard classes? Do you think we need more Music classes in the genre?

EQ1 Bard .. Loved my eq2 bard too ( not the dirge ) The eq2 bard was a very complex support class and I enjoyed that ..

I don't think they had double attack, dual wield, or parry, or riposte in vanilla.  They also had low HP.  The haste helped to make up for that a bit, but I never found them to be very good at melee DPS or tanking.  They were kinda of a support class when grouping in everything.  I would have deemed them a utility class and an exploration class.  The Druid and Bard were probably the two best classes for exploring as they could quickly and safely get around the world.  Kiting lots of mobs in EQ was a dangerous task.  Mobs would often stun you on the first hit and pathing made things even more difficult.  When mobs were low on hp they would break off from the pack and sometimes come back latter with more hp or more dangerous mobs.  It could be a fairly tricky class to solo with.  It did have the widest array of spells/songs/melee/tracking.

Everquest  bard no doubt about that in my mind. No class ever came close to awesomeness of the EQ1 bard.

Everquest Bard were awesome. It was a great support class. Buffs, puller and CC.

The Bard class that I feel is the  best designed was from Vanguard. The Bard was really unique because you can make your own songs and actually name them. I thought that was very clever. In my opinion, I think it's difficult to top the Vanguard Bard class design without doing a direct copy.

Interesting no one has mentioned the bards in Rift. Other than my original EQ bard... yes, they were amazing, Rift has come the closest for me. So much song, so much amazing support. I remember once a group I was in was doing great but they yelled at me for singing and not DPSing so I stopped to DPS. We all died the next pull. They asked me to go back to singing again. :)

EQ1 still the best designed Bard class ever, wont add much as its been well covered above. I also loved my DAoC Minstrel, as the bond of Bard/Caster/Rogue was really fun. Instacast DDs and Rogue like skills made this Bard the best hit and run assassin ever. I could stealth kill 1-2 people in a team before anyone knew what happened and then take off with Bard Speed/SoS. Only real Bard classes I have played. Like Rifts Bard but it didnt feel like a bard. Just a solid class with options to tank, DPS or support.

EQ1 bard was never overpowered.  It would take you forever to do anything solo.  You could get pretty creative with the tools given though.

I don't know, I heard a lot of OP like stories of kiting hole zones and other stuff.
Bards DPS was so bad, the only way to make soloing worth it was by killing many mobs at once. It was the only thing that was solo awesome. Even then you could not use the skill in any zone. You had to be careful the mobs you pulled. No stunning, CC mobs or you would die!

Even if you had all the melee skills like warrior, ranger, and rogue the dps wasn't great. I think with double attack, dual wield, and riposte you could do decent damage over time, but pure casters always won in terms of killing things quickly.  Sometimes melee was better for killing red mobs since their attacks didn't get resisted.  The main problem always with melee was they needed healing to survive.  The only melee I know of with powerful enough heals was the Paladin, Monk, and Shadow Knight.  The Beast Lord was OK because it had a pet, but that class wasn't in until Kunark.  Bard lacked most of the melee skills, but had weaker versions of almost every spell.

I thought almost every mob stunned when they hit your in the back and usually that is wearing you being hit because you were running in circles with them following you.  It was also an issue that the bards AOE songs had a short range.  You had to stay within a certain distance without getting hit and had to do it for a long period of time.

With swarm kiting eq bards could level well.  With fear and charm kiting their leveling was on par with everyone else.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

What is actually considered a Bard class?

Does it have to play songs?
Does it have to be support?
Does it have to love funny hats?
Does it have to hold an instrument?
Does it have to be named Bard?

And why would they be considered good? Because they are overpowered, can deal damage, can solo?

I guess being overpowered is fun to some, but Bards seem to be the jack of all trades and people who like them are usually ones who like to be able to do a little bit of everything.  It's likely some also like the role playing aspect of being a minstrel.  Often the more variety of abilities you have in a class allows you to be more creative in findings ways to exploit those abilities in a creative way by combing a few of them together.

I had a low level bard alt in original EQ. The class was great. I was not so great. But I did manage to complete an armor quest where I was completely blue. Blue counts for something, no?

Like others have said, the EQ Bard was my first and favorite.  I liked the carpel tunnel inducing activity that playing 3 or 4 songs at one time had.  So many good support songs for many differing situations.

I tried a Bard in LotR but never caught me up like EQ did.  Same for EQ 2.  I did not try Vanguard until just before it died and their Bards did not impress me much, though to be fair, I did not get very far with them.  Most other MMOs I have tried/played did not even have Bards.

I'd love to see more "Bard love" in games, but that's just one aspect that is missing these days.
