Why all the hype?

Greetings All !

A few months back, I kept hearing comments here and there from other MMO players who are just outside of the group of people I game with daily... commenting on how they were all anxiously waiting for Black Desert to come out.    I never really heard WHY.

So then, this morning, I watched the trailer.

And I'm still wondering.... why?   Why the hype?   I don't see anything really NEW.    And as I look at the game's pages here on MMORPG (features, reviews, etc)... I'm still wondering what the buzz is/was all about.   ????

Thanks!

I assume its because Action Combat is a fad on this forum along side PvP ruleset. Cant think of any other reason.

It's new. This pretty much always happens.

"OMG this is like a breath of fresh air!"

"It's like playing vanilla [insert favorite commonly acceptable MMO]" (usually UO, DAOC, SWG, EQ, or Vanilla/BC WoW)

A month later everyone is salty and crying on the forums because it's not really that good and then we get another round of "Why WoW needs to die so we stop getting themepark clones" despite that the last 3 years have been a solid stream of PvP focused games with some survival/builder games mixed in. What's our last PvE themepark? FFARR 2013?

This game impresses me because it doesn't go about pretending to be anything it's not. It makes no apologies for being a sandbox, the game does not tell you what you should be doing; it simply gives you the content. Those of you who need to be handheld and told what you should be doing in a game, you will not enjoy Black Desert.

On the other hand if you're like me, and you enjoy sandbox games where you can log in and do whatever you want. I feel safe in saying this is the most legit sandbox experience of the last 10 years easy. I'm not sure what they plan for the future of the NA cash shop, but at this time it's the least p2w title I've played in a long time.

I won't compare it to all the other games even though I've played them all. I'll just say it's worth $30 bucks, and if you like it play it just like any other game.  For me it's all about the gameplay, the themepark quests and voice overs are things I don't care about, and this has great gameplay.

Auto-run is hardly the equivalent of a perpetual theme park quest chain till the game is done. That's also what I was talking about when I said "modern features/convenience".

Edit: Players come here everyday whining for new games to play, then when one comes out they attempt to give themselves every reason possible to avoid playing it. Either you want to play games or you don't.

So instead of linear quest progression you have freedom to grin whatever mob spawn point you wish. Awesome. And with guild and friends. Grind those little bastards, grind them till eyes explode.

That's certainly a cynical way of looking at it.

One could look at it as the combat is very fun and getting together with friends/guildmates to experience the combat together is part of the enjoyment.

You're going to be doing "something" in these games. Quests have devolved into a relay race where you aren't really doing anything but running here and running there.

One might as well enjoy actually "doing something".

You get together with guilds/friends you grind mobs, you build trade routes, you take over towns and areas while fighting other guilds for them. You craft boats and go out and fish and explore, whatever you want to do, you can go for it, but you aren't forced to.

Realizer summed it up well. I originally was not interested in this game, but bought it b/c a friend wanted to play it. I am enjoying all the different paths your character can take at a relaxing pace. I don't think it will hold my interest very long, but its a nice distraction.

Same here I tried the beta early and wasn't planning on getting it till some friends picked it up.  I think the days of people only playing one type of game are gone. People play their fps, mobas, single player themeparks, ect. Black Desert is a great option for adding a sandbox to your list without having to spend hundreds on keeping up. All you need is $30, and you can log in and play if you want, or don't, it will still be there. If you don't burn yourself out on it early and just play when you feel like it, you'll always have something to do.
