Don't these guys have the rights to Fallout? I wonder if this is the beginning of a Fallout MMORPG. With the success of Blizzards World of Warcraft conversion from a RTS to MMORPG maybe we will see more games that were once single player games become MMORPGs.

Bioware is responsible for such classics as Baldur's Gate, Shadows of Amn ( Baldur II ) and KoToR. Some of the old crew from Black Isle are over there and believe me if any1 know how to make games its them. Check out their site, they're working on a rpg named Dragon Age, been following its progress for 4 months now. If Bioware is gunning for the MMO market then I'm signing up!
I smell a Jade Empire MMO personally. It's entirely possible I'm wrong though. However, with the amount of time and resources they put into creating the world for Jade Empire (including creating a unique language for it!), there's got to be something else done with that IP.
"Interesting. Both Richard Vogel and Gordon Walton has been working with SWG in SOE lately. I guess that rumors about developers leaving SWG are true."
Well I forget when Richard Vogel left SOE. Gordon Walton however, left just before the CU went live. SOE didn't even make an official announcement when Gordon (aka Tyrant) left. I'd assume no doubt that they didn't want people to speculate why he left.
There had actually begun to be a lot of communication and then he left and that stopped. The CU obviously was pushed out before it was ready having been tied to a movie release blah blah. I believe it was a case of SOE/LA pushing something and Gordon standing by what he had said in producer letters. The SWG newsletter issue 14 is still something you can find on the SWG site and pretty much shows what Gordon believed at the time.
That's just my take on it of course.
Anyway they mention Gordon as having been at Electronic Arts.
More specificly he worked on Ultima Online as did Richard vogel. Tyrant left sometime around the cancellation of UO2 but didn't leave EA. If I remember he went to Sims Online team or something like that. Then I lost track of him until he showed up at SOE.
Anyway to say I'm excited would be an understatement. There have been some great titles under Bio Wares name. With the right team (which they seem to have and be building) and the proper course of development... This could be huge (at least I hope so I'm so starved for a decent MMO right now).
I smell a possible Star Wars Galaxies 2, I also smell trouble along that path. Hopefully they don't go that route, unless they go the pre-CU path, which was immersive. My guess is that their license for the Star Wars MMORPG is pretty darn long and you can't let money go down the toliet. Lucasarts and George are probably fine with SOE using a company that made the best and pretty much only Star Wars RPG out there, and it was well liked. Although I found it to be kind of trite.

Hmm yeah I might agree with you on that. Unless its a completely new property..but Jade EMpire would be a good bet.

Originally posted by Resetgun Interesting. Both Richard Vogel and Gordon Walton has been working with SWG in SOE lately. I guess that rumors about developers leaving SWG are true.
Richard Vogel was exec producer for SWG. He started up the Austin offices for SOE and was in charge of the live team for a year after it launched. Walton was a dev on the JTL expansion. Neither of them were a part of the CU or the NGE, though many of the decisions made by Vogel are why there needed to be a CU in the first place. It's been 2 years almost since either of them worked with sony.
It is NOT Jade Empire, nor is it a Neverwinter Nights mmorpg.
It is called "Knight Reign Online" where supposedly warriors and knights balance the power of magery with strength, cunning, mighty swords, and magical protective armor. The focus is a balance of PvE and strong PvP where there are strong consequences for dying, and repetitive deaths in a short period of time could lead to a death of your avatar (% chance so they say).
It is a fantasy mmo to be set in a seamless world full of dungeons, mountains, deserts, plains, and swamplands. It will be entirely skill based, tho they will have a level monitor to show differences between players and mobs of their new world, Ikanor.
They want to steer away from the "key required to open dungeon door" mentality of other mmos and get away from the restricted quest requirements. For example, if a group with a decent level mage enters a dungeon, and come to a locked wooden door, for which they havent yet found the appropriate key, the mage could certainly blast down the door with a destruction spell. Group members would however need to avoid the blast, as deadly damage could result if they were too close to the blast. Strong warriors with appropriate weapons and rogues with high lockpicking could also get through such obstacles.
The PvP world will punish griefers with hefty penalties such as being killed by guards in towns on sight, and NPCs not doing business with such trouble-makers. Victims of murderers will also be allowed to leave bounties on their killers and/or form immediate search parties with other players and/or NPC driven dead corpses of all the killer has killed to seek revenge. For example, if a murderer kills 15 innocent players unprovoked, then the victim can immediately form a search party for any willing victims that may be online and all corpses of the slain - meaning that murdered could be immediately sought out by a hugh group of up to 30! (15 potential online victims, 15 NPC controlled corpses). It could also be that a murderer kills the same player 5 times and could be sought after by 6 of his victims (1 player, 5 corpses). Forming such search parties won't come without a cost, however but will definately be worth it to those who demand revenge on who they consider the scum players.
Magery will be balanced against other forms of warfare, but will also not be taken lightly with over 1,200 spells available by launch and an ability to make up your own spells will be available. Spell components and scrolls won't be cheap balancing the mages costs with that of the armor and weapon weilding warriors of Ikanor.
I mean, they're my favourite game developers and all, but I don't want their near-flawless dev history (IMO) tarnished by another ill-concieved mmorpg.
Looks like theyre branching out in a big way though. First consoles, now mmorpgs.
I hope they don't spread their creative genious too thin.
WOOOT! I was waiting for this announcement, as they had only hinted at it previously. If ever there was a company that could put the RPG back into MMORPG i think it would be them. In an article some time ago they were talking about their new Dragon Age IP and how excited they were about what they saw as multiple game possibilities coming from it. They said then that they were interested in the MMO genre and now that WoW was such a success, they thought that it might be something to look into. It is my guess that the MMO they create will be based on their Dragon Age IP, as they are putting a lot of effort into developing the world and universe contained in it, with 5000 years of history/lore and more. I'm extremely excited by this news, as Bioware has to be one of my all time favourite developers, and perhaps this time a game company's name won't be ruined for me. Damn you Blizzard, I used to like you!
OMG! It is about time. I have always said if anyone could make a great MMORPG it would be a company like Bioware or Bungie, and it looks like Bioware is going to finally get into the business. After playing all their games(KoToR being my all time favorite single player RPG) I can only imagine what they will bring to this genre. These guys understand what makes a great game. I cannot wait until we find out more.
Originally posted by freebirdpat I smell a possible Star Wars Galaxies 2, I also smell trouble along that path. Hopefully they don't go that route, unless they go the pre-CU path, which was immersive.
I think that LA gave a case specific license to Bioware, meaning they were allowed to develop KoToR, but nothing much else. A SW-based MMO from Bioware would mean they would have to go back to LA and renegotiate or get an entirely new license.
Originally posted by Fion About 6 months ago they mentioned they were working on 3 new titles. One new one for the PC they announced as Dragon Age. One for Consoles (Jade Empire 2?) and one unannounced PC game, this is clearly it. Bioware is bar none the BEST developer of RPG's and I'd bet my arse they'll make one HELL of a great MMORPG.
Added to that, they are also developing the new Sci-Fi RPG Mass Effect, as well as its two sequels (It is going to be a trilogy). The first one is going to be out later this year, exclusively on the Xbox 360. It wouldn't surprise me if they are also working on Jade Empire 2 as well.
I'd absolutely love a Jade Empire MMO, provided it resembled the console title they've already developed. I bought that game half-expecting to dislike it, but it ended up as one of my favorite RPGs on any console. Too short? Yes, far too short. Too linear at the end? Yes, far too linear at the end. Still, the first several chapters of the game were magnificent, the music was memorable, the gameplay was enjoyable, the characters (most of them, anyway) were interesting, the environments were beautiful, and the list just goes on and on. I have no idea whether or not the game would transition well to a different format, but I'd certainly like to give the result a try. That said, I think it's more likely they'll start a new IP specifically for the MMO or go for a recognizable license rather than use Jade Empire.
BioWare being my favorite developers I gotta say this is great news
I believe they could make great game with pretty much any settings but I hope it isnt Star Wars 2. Though I would love their new MMORPG not to have medieval setting. Mechwarrior MMORPG would be a dream come true

And Interplay still owns the rights to a Fallout MMO.

my sources you ask?
Oh damn, I have none. It was wishful thinking on my part.
