I have moved largely away from the MMORPG genre; there just isn't much that interests me currently (I am watching and waiting though). I am playing more and more multi-player arena and single player games... but I am always after suggestions of something new to try.
Please let me know what games you have enjoyed recently (MMORPG or otherwise), and why they appealed to you.
I'll start off with two: -
Robocraft: Think WOT, but where you design your own machine from the ground up, in a sci-fi setting. There are some balancing issues (missile launchers
), but it is just great fun. Plus I find designing and building and improving your bot endlessly fun.
Life is Strange: I stumbled across this one by accident, largely because high school angst is not a subject that interests me in the slightest, and I nearly quit during some of the more cringeworthy dialogue in the opening chapter... but thank F I stayed with it. It is a point and click adventure, but actually tells a deep, immersive and surprisingly emotional story.

But nothing is "best" in my book same crap over and over, lol.

and Black Desert Online, it is the closest so far to come to my favorite game, SWG
Solo and with friends , addicting and great ARPG.
How dare you ask such tough questions here...
EDIT: noticed you said recently. I have to say either Witcher 3, bloodborne, or Persona 4 Golden.

I no shit just watched a YouTube video for a game that looks like it's about a 12 year old schoolgirl and a very effeminate 15 year old boy saving the world in a WWII tank.
I then visited a web page for a game that looks exactly like one that I played on my Game Boy in 1991.
Me, I'm playing World of Tanks again. The new patch has completely revamped the physics engine in the game and I've been having a hilarious time dying in creative ways in my light tanks.

Wurm Online/Unlimited: your character has 135 skills, hundreds if not a thousand items to craft the vast majority of which have a purpose, terraforming, build your own village homestead or empire, farming, Animal Husbandry, Forestry, much more...and all in 1st person like a game of this kind should be
7 Days to Die: Voxel based high adrenaline crafting/building, fortress design, tower defense game in first person. and yes you will loose your first base
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Final fantasy 7: The story really got to me. Lost artform in todays rpgs.
Mount & Blade: When you thought it was just a cheap indie clone. And it manages to do everything no AAA ever could and then some. This should be held on a pedestal in front of AAA companies. (looking at you Ubisoft / (new) Bioware).
Broken Sword 1, 2: Again with the story. Replayed it not long ago, no one has come close to the throne (no, not even Telltale's walking dead).
Zomboid: The only (out of hundreds) zombie survival game done right.
edit: I wonder how many items listed is going not going to be indie or pre-millennium ..
