My biggest complaint is the lack of traditional healing classes. I also don't like gender-locked classes.
People have complained about the combat a lot. Is it first person combat like TERA? Or some other new system of combat?
Also, I have heard that it is not really that group friendly, is that true?
With all the hype and people talking about how much they love it, I'm just not sold. And I get tired of spending money on games that I don't end up playing. What's the hype all about?

By the end of the 4 days I was hooked, bought it and I'm loving it.
I've now tried all the classes and IMHO, Wiz, ranger and Valkirie are easier to relate to for beginners. I also went back to sorceress after I got the hang of the game and enjoyed the class. Bezerker and tamer are the two I find just meh.

Because if I "sell you on it" that means I've made it rich and juicy and compelling and then you will sign in and be disappointed and I will have done you a disservice.
My biggest complaint is the lack of traditional healing classes.
I've been told Wizards have heal skills (and a rez) and if you get those to maximum it seems you would be able to concentrate on healing to some degree. But there isn't a "healer".
I also don't like gender-locked classes.
Maybe if you think of them as "characters" and less like extensions of yourself that will help? Otherwise there is no way around that.

It's more like Tera in that you have to aim your attacks. However, there are a variety of combos that might feel like keyboard gymastics. You can drag some skills to the hotbar but In beta I saw that some skills executed from the hotbar were less effective. I haven't yet seen this text in the released version so either it's still there but it's not listed or they removed it.
Also, I have heard that it is not really that group friendly, is that true?
No, it's not true. Having said that, it's not entirely false either.
I've grouped more in this game than I have in quite a long time. However, most quests are solo centric. Taking down summoned bosses from the Black spirit quests can be done solo but it's also easier in a group.
Since this is a "grind" game, if you find mobs that con red and are in a group then it goes very quickly, it can be a lot of fun and the xp is decent.
However, you can grind mobs solo no problem. Join a guild and get yourself into grind groups like the old days. or if you hate that then it's better to know now.

You need to really look at what people are actually saying and not get caught up in adjectives. "Best game/most fun/a blast" all of this might be true but it's coming from people who believe it and this is a reaction to their experience which may or may not be different from your experience.
You need to look at the "what'. What is making them say these things. So I might say it's a grind game and it's awesome! And you would ignore "awesome" and concentrate on "grind game" and make your decision there.
At levle 45 if you are not in a group you might be pk'ed. You don't lose anything if you are flagged for pvp and only a little experience if you are not. But it will happen and if you are not ok with it then this isn't the game for you.
Also, the game doesn't hold your hand and you should look at videos about the game in order to explain nodes and trading and crafting and home ownership, workers, etc.

The sex-lock is annoying, admittedly. As I REALLY want to play a male sorcerer because I envision my character as an extension of myself. And that feeling isn't there when playing a female, that's the only reason why for myself at least. But, there is a lore reason for some of the sex locking. In BDO, women have a naturally higher affinity for magic. This is why the Wizard is required to look at least middle-aged or older. As to emphasis it takes more time and effort to use magic as a male. I think it's a scapegoat....but there it is.
Do yourself a favor though. Stay away from watching streamers play the game. If you pick it up anywhere but from the beginning you'll be confused and can't appreciate what you're seeing.
I'm also finding BDO a bit awkward with all the controls, combos, etc. I started off playing a ranger, one of my favorite classes in other games, and don't find it that fun. Any advice to minimize the keyboard gymnastics? Is there an easier class to play that this old gal can master?
Sorry to sound like a newbie and I'm certainly not complaining. I really do want to like this game and play it as a secondary game to ESO which I still very much enjoy.
Thank you,

One thing I like is the fact I am off doing things and leveling slowly building life skills. I don't have to kill mobs all the time, just when I feel like it. I can fish, mine, harvest and gain experience that way.
I am working on master chef so I get tons of cooking quests now that the character is skilled cook.
Just finished a very interesting story line probably not many will do because it came later in the newbie area. There are areas to explore and harvest resources where mobs are non existent so it is laid back at the moment until you hit 45 and PvP flag kicks in.
If you are interested in making a MMO maybe visit my page to get a free open source engine.
btw, I am just going really slow and learning everyhting in game (i am avoiding any guides outside of the game) I am finding it quite fun to slowly learn the systems on my own.
As far as a class besides archer, I am playing a wizard and it is pretty powerful and seems pretty easy to play, there are a few combos that seem pretty easy to pull off and quite a few that can be used from the quickslots.
not worth it honestly.

Thank you for the amazing feedback! And feedback from everyone else! I've looked for the trial codes but they're in pretty high demand. I know $30 really isn't a lot of money, but I've spend a lot of games lately that I end up not really playing. I am getting used to the combat in TERA, but I don't know if I like the sound of the keyboard gymnastics. I may watch some combat videos. The witch class is what I would be playing for sure. Also, I'm an old EQ player so I LOVE setting up a camp and just camping mobs. I'm also big on PvP so that doesn't scare me away. And quite honestly I hate questing and soloing.
The other thing I hear a lot is people talking about exploring the world. I definitely am not a big crafter at all. Is there more to exploring the world than just the crafting? Maybe I'll eventually just bite the bullet and buy it, but I get so sick of spending money on MMOs and other games just to end up throwing them to the wind.

There are vast amounts of wilderness in this game, where you can keep going for quite a while without running into a single player because they're so far away from the quest giver NPCs. I spent some time peacefully fishing in a stream that was coming down from the mountain chain to the south of Heidel, past the swamps. With nothing but the occasional bear and moose in my vicinity.
Another nice detail is that the animals aren't clustered in ridiculous numbers like on some MMOs. In those wilderness areas, they are actually pretty spread out.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
To the OP. If you aren't willing to give BDO a fair shake with an open mind, you should probably pass. That said, if you decide to try it, pass on whatever hype you're hearing, slow down, and just have fun.
MAGA
Pick a couple of skills that work for you and concentrate on keeping them at max for level, if you don't then you will struggle in PVE, never mind PVP.
Main ones for Ranger, particularly if going full archer type, is bow skill, forget the protection dagger skill, its virtually worthless, as the idea is to keep range and avoid close combat.
Good skills involve aoe attacks with knockback, there are 2 main ones that imo, you absolutely need for an archer type ranger, the first is Razor wind, it does a lot of damage, and has a good chance of knocking targets grouped together back, the second skill, is Blasting gust, which you evade backwards when using it, and it can knock groups back.
in between these i find that spamming regular attack combos is good for wearing down the pack, so pinpoint and evasive shot, are the next attacks in order of importance imo.
Most important, make sure you save your points to use ready for when the skills level unlock, if you don't have the points to unlock the skill when it becomes available, will just slow you down, and make it harder for you to fight equivalent level mobs.
Combat is not good on a standard level, the ONLY thing it offers is combinations of keyboard keys and nothing more than that.ZERO immersion for your Ranger,no ammo,no crafting of ammo no various type of ranged.
EARNING is is automated with automated npc workers, travel is usually automated by pressing T ,so again zero immersion.
IMO you can do much better in just about any other game, this game only tried to make it cumbersome with it;s UI and it's memorizing of ability keys.I like to relax when i game,i play tons of games,so i don't want to have to memorize 100+ plus key combinations over several games and several classes.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
On the whole, having fields of mobs is a silly, immersion breaking feature -- one so common you can find it in just about any mmo with a PvE subset of features. Spawn is fast. Just move 10 yards to the left and get out of the field if you're done.
If you primarily use auto-travel to get around, you're gonna find yourself dead...alot...and taking a long time to get to where you need to go. Its a convenience, not an automation feature (see Devilian).
On the combos, it takes getting used to. It's a new trick to learn, but not all that hard. Get yourself in a field of easy mobs and practice. Practice the different skills, see what you like. It's not terribly button-mashey, its more about timing.
Good Evening,
I've been on the fence about this game for some time. I decided to give it a go and see what it is like. It says i get a guest pass. Once I set everything up. If you like i can PM you the pass. Not exactly sure how it works but with it you can at least try it out to see if you like it or not.
