Good Times in Ark.

My buddies and I have a private server.  We've been having a blast.  Above pick is me flying the Pteranodon that I trained over a couple of Trikes and Dachys.  Compys were attacking them at the moment.  If you look hard, you can see those little pesky dinos swarming the Trikes.

I would watch videos and read the steam page if you want to learn about the game.  I'm not a good authority on that front.  We're having a blast though and they seem to update the game every few weeks with more content.  True sandbox.

The game is fun with friends on private servers, hosted by you or your friends (or if you can afford to buy a hosted server it's way better). From my experience though it really sucks on normal maps at least the ones that I have tried, it has hackers and your things can get destroyed really easily. If you are okay with losing everything I could imagine open servers would be fun, but you would have to get a group of friends on every time you play it to make it a little more fair though.

The best option is to get a server for $15 for 35 players (or more if you want.)  You can even set up where people can help pay the costs through donations like guildhosting sites.  Really easy and cheap if you think about spending $15 each person per month for a game that doesn't have 1/100th the variety this game has.

As a cynical, aged gamer (yes, really aged...) I am amazed to say this game has brought back the feeling I had when I played my first MMORPG, EQ.  There's fear, excitement, corpse runs, new skills to learn, co-operation between players (on the PvE servers I always prefer over PvP) and yet more fear.  I always avoid PvP servers because of the inevitable swamp of griefing, hacks and ganking they usually become.  Anyway, with the dinosaurs running around there's enough to kill you ten times before lunch unless you keep your eyes peeled.

From cowering in my 4-walled shack on my first pitch-black night, I now have a nice, big wood structure, with Jurassic Park-style gates and ballistas and spiked walls to protect it with.  I have killer dinosaurs trained and stationed in my fort, Pteranodons that let me soar above the trees and a raft to sail the rivers and freshwater seas. Just wait until I get my electrical power going though...

Best thing of all though is that drive-by players usually drop some basic gear and supplies to a loin-clothed newbie, which is a thing to gladden my cynical heart.  It's been about a decade since I saw something like that happen and by the gods it might just start a helpful community up.  :D

I got it in the Steam sale for £14.99 which is a bargain and I'd advise keeping an eye out for the Christmas Sale.  Do yourself a favour and buy it.

The first two Pteranodons I tamed got killed off lol. I finally got one back to base and I'm leveling it before taking him out for missions.

This game is amazing. I agree about the fear, scary when a pack of Raptors jump on ya haha. Good times indeed. I picked it up on the holiday sale and have been playing on a private server, it's a blast.

My little tribe got lucky the other day and we found a crapton of tamed dinos in an abandoned base.  The gates had been opened and the dinos had about a day to go before I could claim them and luckily I did!  There are two T-Rexes, a Bronto, three Spinos, two Mammoths, two Pteranadons, two Argaventis and twelve to fifteen other relatively minor beasties.  The prize of the bunch is one gigantic bird with a platform on its back, holding a bench, standing torch and an air conditioner - no idea what that's for though.  Maybe hatching eggs?  It's now my heavy cargo lifter since it can carry over 1250 kilos of stuff.  I still boggle whenever I look at it.  :D

This game is super fun and I love playing it. Such a nice "world" where you can interact with people as well as the environment. Don't get me wrong, it has its downside (Raptors randomly killing your livestock) but the game is well balanced and can't wait for final launch.
