We all know that MMOs are made up of many things, we have seen polls about many popular features such as PVP or Group Content. But what about the often overlooked features?

To give a better idea of what each of these types entails here are some games using each type:

Slot Based: WOW, Runescape, TERA, MapleStory, Dark Souls, Stardew Valley
Grid Based: Diablo, Mabinogi, Path of Exile, Deus Ex, System Shock
Mass/Volume Based: EVE Online, Wurm Online, Albion Online, Elder Scrolls Franchise

I loathe the grid based, feels like to me playing another mini-game inside of the game, and it's not a fun one either. Mass is okay but is not my favorite. I picked slot based as it allows me to carry what I want without having to worry too much about it.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

Nothing irritates me more than slotted inventories.

Let's say I have 20 slots in my gigantic backpack.

I can fill those slots with a collection of butterfly wings and navel lint and it will be full.

I can fill those slots with full plate armor chest pieces made of hammered lead and it will be full.

It's idiotic.  Give me a bag that can hold an amount of weight and give every item in the game a weight.  The bag is full when I have 20 bazillion butterfly wings or one suit of full plate armor.

EDIT:  I also take offense to mass/volume based inventory being called hardcore.  There are, by sales, far more Elder Scrolls and Fallout players than MMO players in the world and those games all use mass/volume inventories.

IDK why i click on "other" but i vote for slot based .
More space to carry item is good thing .

My preferred style would be slot based with an added mass/weight capacity based on character strength etc.
Talking about games where thousands of players exist simultaneously in a single instance and mechanics related to such games.

Just my opinion , i don't like weight capacity .
Equipment weight limit may interest , but inventory weight capacity will hurt the collector's soul .
We don't have enough slots for everything and now you add inventory weight capacity ?

The weight limit should put on the player equipped gears , not the inventory .
For example mage have little strength so they only able to wear clothes , that is good . But because he's mage , he can't carry item with him ? that's bad .

I like it when inventories have you compete for space between combat utility and loot ability (Ammo, Potions, energy sources, and similar).

Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.

I prefer, you can have as much stuff as you want with the only limits so high that only the most dedicated packrats will run out of space.  See, for example, A Tale in the Desert.

I don't even understand the thread. What is "Volume based".

Like some items getting a large or small designation and the storage slots reflecting this?

Probably something like EvE, skyrim, or fallout.   Where different items take up different M3/Weight.

Items take up a certain amount of space, and you can carry a certain amount of space. There are no slots and there are no stack limits. You can hold 1 million batteries or 1 car depending on their combined volumes versus the volume that you can hold.

Weight/Volume based seems to be very hit or miss here.

I say .. make em pick and choose (mass and volume restricted).

    But give them

    1) A place to store items (but they have to travel there if they need something)
    2) A way to upgrade existing items and/or
    3) A way to adjust their gear to different situations ("Crystal slots in weapons" or different ammo types etc.)

    Have fun

This could be easily fixed by allowing the player to have as many slots as he wants. I think carrying capacity might bring depth to some games, but I understand not everyone likes it.

Whichever one UO used was the worst.....You could never find anything and was very easy to lose things....Used to hate sorting through kills to try and find anything in that game.

Unless the game has some gameplay around not being able to carry unrealisitc amounts of things, like a sandbox, then probably a high capped slot based inventory is preffered. I don't want to worry about inventory space and even in games like skyrim I tend to just cheat and give me a large capacity with the exception of fallout new vegas survival mode, since honestly is just an annoyance and brings no fun gameplay.

I'd have to say I like a slot based inventory but limited based on weight/mass/volume.

Just couldn't really care less about the system, as long as its easy to use.

Of greater import is how gear / loot fits into the game. For example, in LotRO and SW:TOR, my characters usually had 2 or 3 full sets of gear on them for different situations, plus consumables, then finally whatever I looted on the day, so inventory space was needed and useful.

Compare to WAR, my Blorc only ever had 1 set of gear on him because I was only ever PvPing. Consumables were pretty much a waste unless you were getting into competitive stuff, so I never cared about inventory space.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman

I not only like weight limits (based on strength), I like size limits too.
Putting 10 suits of armor and a huge spear or two in a backpack is ridiculous.
But then I also want pack animals, wagons, and caravans/ships. How about NPC hirelings as Porters?

To me, that's more game play.

    Once upon a time....
