With not a single decent MMO out there except EQ2, WOW and EVE, do people return to EQ2 now that EQN is cancelled? There should be alot of Norrath-Lore fanbois out there, where should we go now?
I would love to go back to EQ2, but everytime i checked in over the years i noticed that the game really didn't age well. The graphics, lighting, shadows, textures, UI (icons!), feeling of character control....it was all good 5-7 years ago, but nowadays i have higher standards for the look and feel of a game.
SOE never really did maintain the engine properly and they were always years behind their own schedule with various upgrades to it like shader versions or the revamp of how particles worked. It's one thing Blizzard did right and they surely know their engine in and out. There was only a single guy fiddling on EQ2's engine back when i was active and he rather shot into the blue with trial and error approaches, like releasing performance features to which nobody on the official tech forums could confirm an actual performance improvement on any hardware. Or that halfway rigged multicore support that still left all cores but one idle. It took them almost ten(!!) years to support SSE.
It has always been said that the engine was made for very high clocked single CPUs that then never came to reality after Intel changed their roadmap and went for multicores instead. Today we have these incredibly high clocked cores and the game still runs like crap for many or can't break the 50fps barrier in busy environments on some high end systems.
I will always love my Warden and my Nec, and the game has an unparalled depth in lore and content. But i'm afraid they would have to re-code the whole game before i would go back.

Not a single decent mmo out there is a complete and utter matter of opinion. Just because you feel that way does not mean that is the case. People didn't quit EQ2 because of EQN and a bunch of people left before it was even announced. It still has a decent player base and is obviously somewhat profitable or it would of been shut down some time ago if not. Also there are many MMORPGS out there. Black Desert has been the best I've played in... Years and while it may not be for you it is a very very solid MMORPG that I continually am finding myself side tracked from leveling in.
No sadly EQ2 is not a game I have been able to enjoy for years now. I know it has tons of content but It just feels empty to me. I am current'y playing landmarks and wow and messing around is shards online
Its still a really great game, better then anything that's come out recently. That said, not sure if the cancellation of EQN has any impact on EQ2s population.
EQ vet from '99, EQ2 vet from 6 months after launch. Won't be giving that cancer of a company a single penny. Hopefully they sell off the EQ franchise to a half decent "GAMING" company and then I'd consider going back to either or both.
going by what i have heard from friends that did EQ2 they left or went in to semi-retirement before EQ:N was announced and it was not a really a factor in their playing of EQ2. Some of them otoh do say that the cancellation of EQ:N made them less interested in DBG "because it looks like they have no momentum left".
Now me as someone who ever just did the free trial area and never went deeper in to the game my interest in EQ:N was the proposed innovation. Since EQ2 lack any of that, i will not get it unless they do a full remodel with the tech from EQ:N
Have to agree with comments about how horrible the game performs. Over the years I've tried to play on a modern system and game just performs so poorly. Maybe my expectations are higher due to playing recent games, but I have a hard time playing with such horrid performance.
Meh I see the cancellation of EQNext as the death knell for Daybreak. Also the topic doesn't make any sense to me since anyone could have been playing EQ2 all along and EQNext was never released to play. How do you go back to EQ2 from a game that never saw the light of day?

Not a single decent MMO except those that you listed above? Who are you? Wizardry?
On topic btw, EQN targeted difference audience from EQ2. If, only if, EQN targeted same audience like EQ2 does, EQ2 will likely be on life support the time EQN development is announced.

EQ1 is the game that I loved, all the awesome systems and mechanics I cherished in EQ1 - none of these made it into EQ2. Yeah no thanks.
I did play and enjoy EQ2 but it didnt feel like a EQ game to me. I also loved EQ1 the most, the classes and their skills. The balance and systems. I would kill for a modern EQ1. If only I could trust that Pantheon would release.
As for the OP, if I was going to play a DGC game right now, it would be EQ1 but that would have nothing to do with EQN being canceled. Its just my first MMO love is all.
returned and just landed level 100. Also noteworthy, a few of my PvP friends returning from that time progression part of the game. If few targets, then no PvP.
I've played EQ2 since 2 weeks after launch and after 11+ years I'm just burned out on the game. The last time I played was during the launch of the TLE servers. It was fun for about a month but it just got old because it's just the same content I've done hundreds of times before on multiple classes and I don't feel like buying the expansion to grind new instances for tokens/gear/levels/AA again. I've got multiple classes that are level 90+ on 2 accounts and there's nothing else I want to do in the game.
For now I'm just waiting for the release of Pantheon and playing SWTOR in the meantime.
I hadnt played it in a couple years so I downloaded it again...They have a promo now where you get a level 90 toon but as soon as he hits 91 you have to pay.....I dunno the game just doesnt feel right to me anymore.... I played about 15 minutes, got bored, and havent played since.
I played it for 5 years but there is no way Ill go back again. The greedy F2P model, the engine that makes the game run worse on my computer then a brand new FPS game and how the game have evolved since EoF (which for me was the game at it's best) means I wont get back unless something unexpected happens (like a new engine).
EQ2 was a fun game once but 12 years old it is nothing for me.
Hell no. It isnt fun and the graphics engine is the worst i have seen. It looks like crap on high settings yet rapes even the newest computers. Complete and utter trash and so was EQN with its bullshit action combat.
I tried it out recently but the hotbars and skill bloating got to be too much right out of the gate. I was playing on a small laptop and having 5-10 hotbars would take away most of my visuals. The classes and lore seem awesome, though. I get why people enjoy it.

what are you talking about? The new The Division is a fun, and very popular game.
Why do players have to go back to old games? May be it is time to move beyond everquest.
bleh sorry but EQ2 exec producer the worst thing that ever happened to it in holly longdale so i am out amazing game still but all content since she came into the job has been downhill i still recommend it though
