Hi , im over 30 and want to get into BDO because there is not much else on the market atm.

I am however worried about the combat system.

How fast paced is it for someone thats a bit slow with reflexes?

Can I pick a magic type caster class without having to use the keyboard for all skills? or having to jump around the screen?

I found the reflexes necessary to play BDO are not overwhelming so I wouldnt let that stop you. You can literally just roll your face over the keyboard and get very close to the same effect as using actual combos.

That being said I personally found the game to be very lackluster.

To many developed systems for a very confusing experience with barely any tutorials. Boring grindy button mashing combat. A cluttered and confusing UI.

    FWIW....

Its pure action combo combat. So you have lots of movement and combo skills are a big part of the combat. So you will be clicking all sorts of letters on your keyboard around the WASD keys to really unlock your damage. They can be remapped under settings if you dont like that but you dont get much more twitch then this game.

Don't worry to much about the combat unless you are going to have PvP as a focus.  You can PvE and craft/farm/do the other 9000 systems in the game without being any good at the combat.

You are not going to be able to click skills though.  This is mouse look combat using the keyboard or hotkeys for the all the skills.

the thing is I enjoy pvp and trading and I know theres no reselling or trading, now pvp I can't seem to do either,  I will need to think further on this

Well, I'm about to be 49 next month and I don't think it's difficult at all. Now, this could depend on which character you play but I've been playing Valkyrie and got a Warrior in its 20's during the betas and never had any issues.

However, as Mardukk mentions, you can't click skills. If you are using a gaming mouse, such as a naga or similar mouse, that will help a lot if you need to put something on your hotbar.

will there be like 5x hotbars full of skills I need to memorize?

will it just be a few skills, maybe then I can memorize them and link to keyboard?

  • MikeJezZMikeJezZ Member UncommonPosts: 1,268
Well, this game is not for 1v1, 3v3, or 5v5 like World of Warcraft Arena PvP. It is about Guild vs Guild, so in the end, you will be grouped with alot other players. Skill won't matter much in a big crowd.

There is only one hotbar. Having said that there are more skills than can fit on the hotbar.

Think of it more like a fighting game where you have certain "moves" that you can implement.

So for example, I press "E" I grab my opponent and throw him to the ground. I then can press left mouse button and the "w" key and hit in while he is down, I can then press "S" and the right button key and implement a greater damage ability that goes well with the one that proceeds it.

You get your skills slowly so you can practice them. If you mouse over the icons in the skill window you get a nice animation of what the skill does as well as which button/mouse button to press.

Shouldn't blame it on your age, you're not 82.
I'm not trying to be a dick but I actually felt a little offended by that.

I'm level 20 and haven't even used a combo yet. I fireball. fireball. Stuff dies. Once in a while if i get attacked by a few things I have to side step by tapping the direction, but isn't bad. I'm sure combos are absolutely necessary later on for combat, but it's worth playing for me and I'm only 20 after 2 weeks

Eve is retardedly slow paced. You can check that out. Seems its the only game caters to you older folk.

^ Nah that was just a troll statement. BDO is not street fighter kind of action paced. You just have to be willing to memorize few simple combos with your keyboard and mouse. It doesn't take talant. Enemy's attacks (or the ones that matter at least) are heavily telegraphed and you have a lot of time to step out of the way.

Haven't been in PvP to tell you more, but I'm sure if you have the better level/gear you'll smash out most of teh pro/leet kids these days.

I'm ancient compared to you and I have no problem. It is quite twitchy, but it's not the worst I come across. In fact, outside of PVP, I only use the default LMB attack, one combo and one AOE. The combo is mapped, so that takes care of that :).

I'm ranger, but I understand that wizard/witch is even less twitchy than ranger, so might be a good choice.
  • WizardryWizardry Member LegendaryPosts: 19,332
Well it is as fast paced as having to remember several keyboard keys in succession, and if playing several different classes then it is like trying to remember the winning lottery numbers from a year ago lol.
To me it is just a nonsense way of implementing combat,it should NEVER be about remembering keyboard keys in certain orders.

If you were performing some combo attack in real life you wouldn't be like ok left arm first then right arm then back flip then side step Doh cee doh spin your partner round and round lets all do some country line dancing lmao.

I'm 41 and I literally started playing tonight thanks to a forum poster here giving me a 7 day pass. I got my Sorceress to level 11 so far and I will say that there seems to be quite a bit of different combinations of your skills to make combos and shit. In briefly looking at the other characters i think you'll be busy on the keyboard no matter who you choose so maybe pick one you think its the coolest... like i did!

Anyway, i know 11 levels isnt much but i like the game so far.

I'm 57...I think, and I do fairly well at action style mmo's like Tera and Wildstar. This game however, has a lot of problems (at least imho). The combat is overly difficult and really needs to be simplified. Either go full hotbar with keys, or figure out a better system to combat with. Something like GW2 or even Tera's system.
The game is beautiful, and I love everything you can do, but you have to have a good combat system to go along with it or it loses some of my vote points.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

There are a lot of skills but really only a handful of everyday, use all the time skills. Those become intuitive and second nature pretty fast,

I'm over 60 and I have no problems with it whatsoever. But then again I bought a multi-button gaming mouse for MMOs years ago and haven't looked back since.

you can faceroll everything even if you are doing it wrong

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

Maybe for pvp it will be tricky, but for regular pve combat most skills use the left and right mouse button, with the skill changing depending on which direction key you press. EG: "w" + left click executes a different skill to "s" + left click. Some skills u have to press a specific key (eg "q" or "e"); you can also map skills to other keys if you want to get fancy.

After I said I would not play this game after I tried beta, boredom overtook me and I'm giving it a shot because a friend gave me a pass. As a Valkyrie in my high teens now, I can't keep up with the combos for the moment, but I'm  seeming get combos in.....need a lot more practice. Thing is, like others have said, I completely slaughter everything even with my horrid keyboard skills.
I'm starting to wonder if maybe a caster would be less of a problem for me, even though it's easy mode at the moment.
Biggest problem with this game is I feel completely lost. So far, tutorials are minimal when they even exist. I'm hoping they get a little more in depth in the 20's? I went to the website, where there is very minimal information. Can someone point me in a direction of a good website?

LOL I can tell your not just by your screen name :)

Kidding aside, The age that was introduced to gaming when it first entered the world is generally going to be the largest segment until we die.  Kids are always surprised that I am a "gamer", even if I have less time for it these days, because I am 41.  If you were a kid when Nintendo came out. . you are likely to always be a gamer.  It entered the world during our formative years in an accessible way like pot did for you.

But seriously, I'm enjoying BDO's combat immensely. I play a warrior and I find the system extremely refreshing compared to tons of other MMOs where you just stand rooted to the spot and spam two attacks the whole time. The only problem I imagine I'll soon have is not knowing where to quickslot potions once my skills take up the entirety of my hotbar. But, at level 15, it is still not a concern.

Yeah, I really don't know what's going on. People in their 30's and 40's thinking they are old?

Heck, I went out with a woman in her early 50's and she plays hockey!
