Not only did they kill Galaxies. They just may have killed MMOs. History will judge, but it seems that this genre has lost its innocence and trust.
My fear is that players will never again trust developers at their word.

It was ruined in so many ways right from the start....
Its just a sorry joke now

SWG was never really a game. It was divine retribution visited upon the gaming community for giving money to SOE, or at least that is how it felt when I played it, or maybe it was just a sociological experiment to see how long a company can abuse its customers before they all leave.
I'm not bitter! Who said I was?
As for ruining the genre of MMOs? No. Just look at how many are in development. That doesn't seem like a genre in its death throes to me. SWG did permanently stain the reputation of SOE in the mind f many people, however, and that could seriously effect any future games they publish.
I just want to know who thought the NGE was a good idea, and if that person was fired.
When people will pay others to play a game for them it might be a sign the game isn't all that fun.

I agree with your apocalyptic portrayal. Well said, man!
I do see about twenty titles in the "in development" section. Its the same list I have seen for months and months on end, with no change. In fact, I don't think I have seen an MMO yet that has been fully designed and released in the post WOW era. Most of these things are holdovers from a very long time ago (in production terms). Until I see them available for sale, and launched, I consider them subject to being cancelled at any time.
And many already have been. Mourning being the most obvious and graphic example. Others, like Warhammer Online, have been cancelled, then re-established, to the point where we have no idea if we'll ever see it. Others don't even have alpha builds yet, and are at the same coffee and theory stage that they have been for it seems like ages.
If there are more games than ever before, its news to me. Because all I see on that sidebar is a lot of unfinished projects, that never seem to ever get finished.
But the thing that gave me the most concern, out of all the actions in recent memory, are the actions of Farlan with SoG accounts for their upcoming Dark and Light. Slimy stuff like that is killing this genre, and how can you blame them? If an established and benchmark player like SOE takes liberties with the developer pereogative, who is to say a relatively smaller and younger player like Farlan shouldn't?

You're just realizing they goofed it up now? NGE was rolled out in November 2005 dude.
Those who hated CU would argue that they ruined it last May.
Personally I think they ruined it in Beta when they decided not to include Spaceflight with the base game... then they REALLY ruined it 3 months after release when they implemented Jedi. It was all pretty much downhill after that.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online. Sig image Pending Still in: A couple Betas
I think it started it's downward spiral with the introduction of jedi, but never hit the point of no return till the NGE. Now it's unsalvagable. The CU was bad, but didn't destroy EVERYTHING in the game that I loved. I could still play my character without feeling like I was playing Star Wars Elmo. Now, it's like whack-a-mole with blasters.
The game isn't an overall failure, sure it has its problems but what game now a-days don't have them. They just took a shot to make every Star Wars fan and mmorpg fan dreams come true, and sadly that shot was made in the dark. Someone will come out with a good if not better Star Wars mmorpg.
When they do they can look at previous mistakes and make a game we will be glad to play for months on end. I just hope that when they do they not only fix the problems but make it better with new innovations and or new stuff to keep us playing without the need for a expansion for a while.

- It was during the first year of development that it was announced the SE (Space Expansion) would NOT be released with the core game, but released a year after the core game released. This is back at the end of 2000/start of 2001. (SWG was announced end of 1999).
- Jedi were put in much, much, later than 3 months after relsease. More like 6 months after release is when the Jedi Hologrind mess was implimented. It was at this point that SWG stopped all record growth and never continued growing past 330k accounts.
- It was the JHM (Jedi Hologrind Mess) that officially showed the point when SOE/LA goofed up. Proof is the fact that SWG stopped growing dead in its tracks. More goofing up would fallow, with the finaly obvious goof being players could now instantly be Jedi.... even after the game DEVs spent years claiming Jedi would be rare because of the time period of SWG.
