I'm older than the OP and feel the same way.

Spent a whole day actively fishing at one point while chatting on world chat.

Enjoy the amity system, the horse taming, the cooking, most of the quests, the worker system, the node system, the inability to fast travel, the combat, the fact I got an easter egg filled chandelier for my dingy house in Velia.

I have 5 toons, none of them have cracked L25 yet and I'm in no rush to do so. But will play at every opportunity.

My biggest issue is working out which toon to play each time I log in. The serker for some CP and bash crash fun, the wizard for some fishing, taming or nukage PvE, the tamer for some beer making or farming, the ranger for some mindless pve or the sorcerer (who may disappear if the blader shows up soon).

I'm the same age as the OP and feel like you and them.  I think our age gives us patience and we value depth.  I see people rushing to 50 and moaning or finding the crafting too tedious.  For me, I don't care for what level I am, I love exploring and figuring out how to do things.  As nothing is handed to you on a plate, it's a sense of achievement in itself to do something - you don't need a WoW-like achievement ping for doing something so simple that you didn't realise you even did in the first place.

This game requires patience, interest and time - I don't want to miss much on my long journey and today note that a new area has opened with 1,000+ more quests.  How people can say it's pvp only is beyond me.  It's like Eve online in that respect, because lots of people play for the pve and don't want to fight; sure you will have to avoid it, but there is the economy and supporting the fighters that will surely allow you to enjoy the game later.

In any case, this is the best MMO I have played for a long time.  I've hunted for it i.e. a real gem, and here it is.  Oh, and no subscription and the cheapest B2P MMO I can think of, makes it a winner.  I'll support it though, I've bought some bag space and a dog, because I want to.

Have you guys tried Farmville?  Or Stardew Valley?  You can can probably do more of this kind of stuff in those games than BDO.

And what the hell are you "inventing"?  "Reading"?  Afking at a bookshelf?

Sometimes I read these kind of posts and it really seems people are like drunk or something.

Who's saying you need to play 8 hours a day? Iike any form of entertainment, do it in moderation. Surely that is obvious?

I'm guessing that he is referring to the activities such as farming, fishing, horse breeding, trade runs and likening them to "work".

Those are not less or more work than killing mobs in a dungeon, daily, pvp, or a raid over and over. Or doing anything else.

Anything can be "work" if its not an enjoyable experience. But you know what- Its actually an ejoyable experience. Its not an enjoyable experience in farmville because there is not a whole other game that comes around it.

It would be like me saying that there is no reason to play blade and soul because there is something called street fighter where you get a deeper combat system. That's not really the point.

The point is that BDO has these life skills in conjunction with everything else. I am out exploring in the mountains trying to complete a quest so I can buy another house as I neeed more storage. I see these trolls, and I kill them, and there is this cave, and I go through it, and there is this little pond. I go in and I pull out my fishing pole and I am catching some rare fish. Then I backtrack and do the quest. I see the top of a mountain and go up to the top. discover it. see a wild horse. runs after it. captures it. yay! takes it back to town and starts horse breeding.

Farmville doesnt have a meta game where lifeskills, combat, exploration or one of the most immersive game worlds ever conceived come together. Gamers dont have to do just one thing. The game doesnt punish you for doing a little bit of everything. its the ultimate variety.

In BDO there is usually a reason to do anything.  In other MMOs, you do it for the sake of doing it or a meaningless achievement.  BDO manages to link everything together to make sense.  Been playing MMOs for 15 years and this is the one that I've enjoyed the most.

I am a 40 and I would echo many of the sentiments already expressed.  I am totally enjoying the game and I haven't had this must-play, addicted feeling about a game since DAoC and EVE.

Naturally I still have some concerns and I want to see how PvP functions a bit more.

This game seems more like a virtual fantasy world (i.e. Second Life) with combat, than a pure combat MMO like WoW or GW2 ect ect. I've been hunting for years for an MMO where I could just do whatever, kinda like I did in SWG, this kinda fits the bill...for now. Still doing my 7-day guest pass, but I might buy it. Still testing my love for this.
btw Is it worth getting the Explorers pack vs the Travelers?

I think someone worked it out that if you buy the items seperatly they do cost more, and got to be honest having a tier 3 horse (that although not a fully tier 3 horse) and permanent whistle are seriously handy to start with, the biggest bonus is the pet imo :)
I will be honest and say if you financial situation allows it then go all in for the £49.99 package it is worth it if your planning on sticking around. On other hand if your happy just ot buy the game and play slowly over time then the lower package will suit . However, the issue there is you dont have a pet to begin with and looting is a ball ache to say least, but not having the whistle means you always have to stay fairly close to your mount.

This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

One of the few people who understands why I feel some MMORPGs are superior to others, the activities you perform have a purpose behind them beyond endlessly gear grinding.

I realize BDO has a gear grind, but it has significance, it improves your PVP capability, which in turn let's a player better succeed in territory control and defense.

This is one of the best designs in any MMO IMO as it can be endless as well as majestic in scope, as is oft evidenced in titles such as EVE, ESO, Lineage 2,  or DAOC to name just a few.

Eh, gear grinds have a purpose in other games too.  They let you do better advanced dungeons or pwn people in PVP.

This "territory control and defense" is not in the game yet, but all signs point to it being a clusterfuck of epic proportions- nay I daresay majestic proportions!  Between the Ellon's Tears, Treant suits and the basic fact that pve grind = pvp skill in battle, I don't see it going over well, to be honest.

I don't think that's what he was talking about though.  I think he was commenting on how all the crafting and whatnot is linked and complex, not the fact that everything you do is to try to earn enough silver so one day you won't get one shot, if you're lucky (which seems to be true, but it wasn't his point).

Stardew Valley has been on top of the Steam game charts for weeks now, and there is a reason why; it's a lot like Harvest Moon, and it's fun . I actually own it and love it. Needless to say fishing in that game is harder than fishing in BDO.

Except it does. Playing efficiently is paramount as pvp is based almost entirely on your gear. For every second you spend not earning money or not grinding, you inch farther and farther away from the gear curve. While also inching closer and closer to getting 1 shotted.
